There seems to be some mixed reactions about the UFC’s recent tendency to place backup fighters on cards with big title fights or main events.

For example, when Tyron Woodley defended his welterweight championship against Darren Till, there was some concern the Englishman might not make weight. As a result, the UFC hired Kamaru Usman to cut weight and prepare as if he were going to fight should his services be required.

However, Woodley was against the concept and said he didn’t like the idea of taking a fight against a competitor completely different to who he was originally preparing for. Luckily, Till made weight and nobody had to worry about any of that. But it looks like UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker echoes his fellow UFC champion’s sentiments.

Whittaker recently spoke to media to promote his upcoming title defense against Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 234 in February. “Bobby Knuckles” said the UFC’s backup fighter concept is a ‘silly’ one to him (via MMA Fighting):

“I think the idea behind backup fighters is a little silly or there should be different incentives and things involved in it,” said Whittaker. “I think it should be more thought out, I can’t envision a guy getting paid to make weight. That’s not the sport, that’s not the name of the game.

“I think fights need to be made and deadlines need to be made, I think athletes themselves need to be more professional about the sport, I think a lot of guys are getting lax, a lot of guys are taking advantage of different loopholes they can exploit.”

Whittaker has been in this situation before. In his last fight against Yoel Romero, the contest was not for his 185-pound title because the Cuban wasn’t able to make weight. Instead, Whittaker and Romero competed in a five-round non-title contest. However, should Whittaker have been forced to fight a replacement opponent, it puts him in a corner.

While he’d like to refuse such a fight on short-notice, he’d have had to traveled across the world from his native Australia to the United States, all for nothing, as he wouldn’t be paid if he refused to fight:

“Again, you’re putting me in a corner, aren’t you?” Whittaker said. “It’s like we get to the fight night, my opponent can’t make it and you’re like, ‘You still gonna fight?’ What am I a pussy? You’re kind of forcing my hand when you put me in a corner like that.

“Does no one else see any holes in that plan? I think there are a lot of holes to be exploited in that plan. It seems silly to me, because the whole idea between fighting is you have an opponent that you prepare meticulously for, for weeks.

“And then all of a sudden, the guy says, ‘Can’t fight.’ And the backup guy is conveniently there? Nah, dude.”

Anderson Silva has been competing in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) for over 20 years.

At 43 years old, Silva is reaching the end of his storied career. Despite repeated setbacks in recent years, many consider him to be the greatest of all-time. While fans might have known that Silva’s career was reaching its end, they weren’t exactly sure how much longer the Brazilian really planned on sticking around.

Now we know.

Speaking to media recently, Silva stated that he plans on fighting three more times before hanging up his gloves for good. Two names that stick out to “The Spider” the most before retiring are Georges St-Pierre and Conor McGregor (via MMA Weekly):

“I have three more and then it’s done. It’s over. At his point in my career, I believe that the good challenge is the super fight. I talk to Dana about Georges St-Pierre, about (Conor) McGregor, about McGregor especially because McGregor is a challenge, this fight. I just talk to Dana a lot about the fight that’s very interesting.”

Before he can worry about a potential fight against “GSP” or McGregor, Silva must first focus on the task at hand. He’ll be taking on rising middleweight star Israel Adesanya, a man who has drawn a lot of comparisons to Silva as of late. The Nigerian is coming hot off a knockout victory over Derek Brunson at UFC 230.

Silva will face Adesanya at the UFC 234 pay-per-view (PPV) from the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia on February 9, 2019.

Israel Adesanya has garnered the attention of many in the UFC’s middleweight division.

At UFC 230 last month, Adesanya put on a spectacular performance under the bright lights inside Madison Square Garden. He picked apart Derek Brunson for a first-round knockout win. The victory extended the Nigerian’s perfect mixed martial arts (MMA) record to 15-0. With the win, he’s looking to get on the fast track to a 185-pound title opportunity.

And what better way to earn a title shot than beating the greatest middleweight champion of all time? Adesanya will step into the cage to face Anderson Silva at UFC 234 on pay-per-view (PPV) from Melbourne, Australia on February 9, 2019. He recently did an interview with the UFC to discuss being paired up against “The Spider.”

Adesanya has been compared to Silva several times, a man who he himself believes is the greatest of all time. Initially Adesanya didn’t want to have to fight Silva out of respect, but after some discussion with his team, he realized it had to happen (via MMA Mania):

“For me, I didn’t want to (fight him) at first. I was on record saying there is no need. But I had to do it, I had this dream. I talked to my coaches and said, ‘Yeah, this is how it it supposed to play out.’

“The guy is the GOAT. But I am Nigerian and I’ve been eating goat since I was a kid. This is normal to me,” Adesanya said.

Adesanya and Silva do share one common denominator. Their latest victories inside the cage both come over Brunson. Silva defeated Brunson back in February of 2017 via unanimous decision. It was Silva’s first win since October of 2012.

Now, he’ll look to put together his first win streak in nearly seven years, but he’ll have to do it by beating one of the hottest young stars in the division today.
