The Octagon girls have been a staple of the UFC for many years, however, not everyone is a fan — the Lord Mayor of Melbourne Sally Capp being one of them.

UFC 243 takes place October 5 at the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia. It will be headlined by a massive middleweight title unification clash between Robert Whittaker and Israel Adesanya. The bout is regarded by many to be the biggest Australasian fight in combat sports history.

However, Capp believes the practice of having Octagon girls carrying cards during the event is an outdated one and doesn’t seem to want them during UFC 243:

“It’s 2019, do we really still need scantily-clad women to wander around the middle of a fighting ring between rounds?” Capp asked the Herald Sun (via MMA Mania). “Grid girls are no longer part of Formula One, walk-on girls are no longer part of professional darts — surely it’s time to move on.”

It should be noted that last weekend’s boxing match between Jeff Horn and Michael Zerafa in Bendigo saw the ring girls replaced by men after outside pressure. There is no word on whether the UFC will follow suit, but it seems highly unlikely.

At UFC 243, one of the most anticipated fights of the year goes down in Australia as Robert Whittaker looks to defend his title against Israel Adesanya. It will no doubt be a massive fight, and a fight many fans are looking forward to.

It is a close fight to call for many, as Adesanya has looked unbeatable in the UFC. While Whittaker is the champion for a reason. Yet, Paulo Costa, who appears to be next in line, thinks it is a much easier fight to call and that is Whittaker defending his belt.

“Robert is a more complete fighter than Israel,” Costa said to MMA Junkie. “I think Robert will still be champion. He will defeat the fake champion, Israel. I think Robert will win by judges’ decision.”

There is no question Paulo Costa and Israel Adesanya do not like each other. They have traded shots at one another on social media. The Brazilian doesn’t believe “The Last Stylebender” is a real champion and will lose his fake belt in October.

If Costa is right, he believes he will be fighting Robert Whittaker for the title next. But, he recently had surgery.

“I had surgery on the left biceps tendon,” he said. “It was an old injury. I had to fight with 50 percent of the ruptured tendon against Romero because I didn’t have time to have surgery before the fight. Now that the fight has happened, it was the ideal time to perform surgery because I will have time to recover and return 100 percent to challenge for the belt.”

In the end, Paulo Costa is rather confident he was what it takes to beat either of them and wants the Whittaker fight to happen by the end of the calendar year.

“I will be out for just three weeks and I can fight again in December,” Costa said. “I will wait to fight for the belt. This is my time. I am next.”

Do you agree with Paulo Costa’s prediction for Robert Whittaker vs. Israel Adesanya?

Robert Whittaker and Israel Adesanya will finally settler their differences in the main event of UFC 243. The two have gone back-and-forth in interviews trash-talking each other and building up the fight.

Yet, when the two do step into the Octagon it will no doubt be a highly anticipated fight. Many want to see if Whittaker will be able to end the hype of Adesanya. Or, will “The Last Stylebender” be too much and become a UFC champion? According to the champ, he expects to hear ‘And Still’ and thinks he will finish the New Zealander early.

“That’s the biggest thing I took away from that fight,” Whittaker said to Triple M (h/t MMA Junkie). “If Gastelum can puts hands on him, I can puts hands on him. Honestly, I think I’m going to finish him. I’m definitely going to look for the finish, but I think I’m going to finish him somewhere in the second, third round.”

Although the two have done tons of interviews and press conferences, Robert Whittaker isn’t letting it get under his skin. Instead, he doesn’t care what Israel Adesanya has to say as in just a few weeks time they will get to fight.

“It’s kind of another mentality I’ve always had, is I don’t understand why we’re trash talking each other, because literally we’re going to be punishing each other within X-amount of weeks,” Whittaker said. “It’s like there’s no point. Anything you’ve got to say means nothing.”

It is no doubt a massive fight for the Oceanic region. They have an Aussie and a Kiwi fighting for a UFC belt. But, given Whittaker was born in New Zealand, many think he may have some fans from there cheering him on. Yet, he doesn’t care about any of that.

“Who cares?” Robert Whittaker said. “It doesn’t matter, because it’s only going to boost the combat sports game in New Zealand and Australia. At the end of the day, as much as we love the rivalry, we love each other a lot more than everybody else anyway, so this is going to be the biggest combat sports fight in the history of the game in this part of the world, and I’m pumped to be a part of it.”
