Colby Covington apparently wasn’t at his best when he fought Kamaru Usman for the UFC welterweight championship this past December.

Covington headlined the UFC 245 pay-per-view (PPV) against Usman in what was a great back-and-forth bout. However, when it was all said and done, Usman picked up the fifth-round TKO win after breaking Covington’s jaw midway through the contest. It was surprising to many that neither Usman nor Covington attempted to wrestle during the fight, as they’re both extremely talented grapplers.

With that being said, Covington was recently a guest on the “It’s All About Who You Know” podcast to talk about the December loss, and revealed he was actually dealing with a bout of food poisoning before the contest. Covington noted the UFC was preparing his meals before the fight, and one of the meals actually made him very sick. He wasn’t feeling up to his full strength for the fight, which is why he decided not to wrestle. (H/T BJPenn.com)

“I’m not making excuses,” Covington said. “I haven’t really told anybody, but the UFC was preparing meals for me all fight week, and I ended up getting really sick of one of their meals. I think they didn’t cook the chicken very good, and I got food poisoning two nights before the fight. I puked like 30 times, literally like 30 times.”

Covington went on to say that he even considered pulling out of the fight given how sick he became. But after speaking with manager and American Top Team (ATT) owner Dan Lambert, Covington was convinced to stay in the fight, and very nearly won the title before being stopped late.

“I told my manager Dan Lambert ‘I’m going to have to pull out of the fight, man,’” Covington said. “He’s like ‘no, you can’t pull out man, you’re the main event. You can’t do this to the UFC, you just need to go through with it.’ I ended up going through with it, but I didn’t feel my best. That kind of played into the decision not to wrestle [in the fight] because I didn’t feel strong.

“It’s like I was holding back a little bit because I knew I was puking, my liver and intestines were all messed up and I wasn’t at full strength. So what I’m trying to say is I was on my worst day and ‘Marty Fake Newsman’ was on his best day and I still beat him. So you can imagine what’s going to happen in the rematch when I’m at my best and he’s at whatever level he’s at. It’s going to be a completely different outcome.”

In recent interviews, Covington has suggested he is seeking an immediate rematch with Usman for the title. “Chaos” is convinced that the officiating for the fight was poor, and the stoppage in the fifth round was premature. While it looks like the UFC is instead going in the direction of Jorge Masvidal vs. Kamaru Usman next, it will be interesting to see if Covington gets his wish.

Colby Covington continues to blame referee Marc Goddard for calling his fight with Kamaru Usman early.

Covington and Usman battled in a back-and-forth war in their welterweight title fight at UFC 245 in December. However, it was Usman who was able to get the victory after dropping Covington twice in the fifth round.

With Usman landing strikes on a downed Covington, Goddard saw enough as he called an end to the action. Many felt it was a slightly premature stoppage, including “Chaos” who unloaded on Goddard after the fight.

Covington also believes Goddard gave Usman an unfair advantage by giving him time to recover from fake illegal shots earlier on in the fight. He expanded more in a recent appearance on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday:

“Let’s talk about the 5th round. I’m beating his a** again,” Covington said. “I’ve won the whole entire fight, the fight’s mine. They’re about to wrap the welterweight championship around my waist. Then all of a sudden, I slip on a banana peel and I’m getting hit in the back of the head. Marc Goddard is seeing this right in front of his face. Go look at the video in the fifth round.

“I’m completely coherent and I cover up the back of my head. And when I cover the back of my head, he calls the fight. I stand right up and protest, ‘what are you doing? Why are you calling the fight? I’m winning the whole entire fight. There’s less than a minute left in the fight.’ You see a foul right in front of your face and you call it. Then when you don’t see a foul in front of your face, you give him time and you throw him a life raft in the river when he’s drowning.

“That’s why he’s named Marc not so Goodard and he shouldn’t be a ref ever again. I feel bad for all the people who ever had to deal with him as a ref. Look at the next week — Frankie Edgar had to die in a fight just because Marc Goddard was trying to do a makeup call because he f*cked it up and did such a bad job in the fight between me and Marty Fakenewsman.”

His feelings towards Goddard aside, Covington feels it’s only right for the UFC to book a rematch between him and Usman. If that doesn’t happen, he believes it’s a corrupt business:

“They need to run this back,” he added.”There’s 10 more rounds in this, Ariel. Everybody knows that — there’s going to be a sequel and there’s going to be a trilogy to this. Marty Fakenewsman is the only one in the world who doesn’t want this fight.

“The people want this fight. I am the people’s champ for a reason and I fight for the people. But Marc not so Goodard robbed the people of a fair fight. He robbed the fight of a fight down the middle. This needs to be ran back and if it’s not run back, it’s a very corrupt business and it’s a fix.”

Jorge Masvidal revealed he hasn’t seen much of Colby Covington at American Top Team (ATT) lately.

Over the last few months, tensions started to rise between Covington and Masvidal as they trash talked each other, especially with the former roommates and friends both training at ATT.

To make matters worse for the former, he also had beef with Dustin Poirier — also training at ATT — who claimed things would be on sight if they saw each other in the gym following comments Covington made about him.

Since then, Covington would lose his welterweight title fight with Kamaru Usman at UFC 245 last month following a fifth-round TKO. “Chaos” notably broke his jaw during the fight much to the delight of everyone he has ticked off over the past few years.

And when asked by Ariel Helwani on Monday if he has seen Covington at ATT lately, Masvidal responded by revealing some locker room talk with Poirier:

“[Poirier asks] ‘Yo man, where’s Colby?’ I go ‘Bro, don’t even worry about it. He’s on witness protection program. When you see this dude, you can’t even touch him.’ … ‘I don’t know if Trump has hired them or something but he [Covington] has secret service with him.’ So it’s nuts. You can’t even look at the guy’s direction. He’s got too many people on his side.

“DP was thinking he could get to at least talk to him man to man. But nah, that dude [Covington] don’t go to the gym man. He’s a punk and he got [broken jaw] what he deserved.”

Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra believes the stoppage that saw Kamaru Usman defeat Colby Covington was a bad one.

Usman defeated Covington via fifth-round TKO after a back-and-forth war in their welterweight title fight at UFC 245 earlier this month. There was some controversy, however, as some felt referee Marc Goddard stopped the action too soon as Usman was attempting to finish Covington on the ground with less than a minute remaining.

Serra is one of them as he felt it was a “premature” stoppage given how Covington was trying to defend himself:

“I felt that was definitely a little premature,” Serra said on the UFC Unfiltered podcast (via BJ Penn). “F*ck, the guy’s fighting almost 10 minutes with a broken jaw. He went down, he’s moving his head, he’s covering up. Why? He gets up, first thing he says is, ‘what are you doing?’ And listen, I really feel weird being the guy to go to bat for Colby cause I don’t like the guy.”

Serra believes Usman would have won the decision anyway given that he knocked Covington down twice in the final round. So it would only have been fair for the rest of the fight to play out:

“I feel that Usman would’ve got the decision,” Serra added. “So let him get the decision or see what else happens. I can’t just look at that stoppage and say, ‘yeah that was good.’ There might have been worse ones but it was pretty bad. It was pretty bad for what was at stake there.”
