The next UFC welterweight title fight is finally set. Champion Kamaru Usman will make his first career title defense against ex-interim champion Colby Covington. The pair will headline UFC 245 on pay-per-view (PPV) on December 14.

One man who is very familiar with both competitors is former 170-pound king Tyron Woodley. Woodley has fought Usman for five rounds – ultimately losing the welterweight crown to “The Nigerian Nightmare” – and is a former training partner of Covington.

Speaking on his “Hollywood Beatdown” segment for TMZ, Woodley explained why he believes Usman has a slight advantage over “Chaos” in the matchup. (H/T MMA Junkie)

“I think Usman’s scrambling abilities are better than Colby’s as far as once you get to a leg,” Woodley said. “Anytime you get to a single leg versus two legs, it’s always a scramble involved. So when you watch Kamaru Usman – like, my teammate Michael Chandler is his training partner – when you watch those guys scramble, going around, this is high-level scrambling.

“I think Usman has a slight edge that is annoying and frustrating to deal with and if he can’t get space, he may not be able to punch Colby, and that takes his advantage in striking away.”

It’s no secret that Woodley and Covington have a heated rivalry with one another, which hopefully gets settled inside the Octagon one day. However, Woodley gives respect where it’s due, praising Covington for his relentless cardio and motor.

Of course, Woodley notes Covington isn’t one to throw power shots, which likely plays into why he conserves so much gas in his tank.

“I think he really, really has a good motor,” Woodley said. “I think he’s in good shape. But it’s not like he’s in good shape because he’s landing explosive, powerful combinations. He’s not exerting his body, throwing powerful shots. He actually punched like he’s swinging little Ottoman cushions around. But when you really think about it, he never has to explode.”

What do you think about Woodley’s breakdown of Usman vs. Covington?

Alexander Volkanovski will finally get his shot at the UFC featherweight championship. Volkanovski will take on Max Holloway for the 145-pound title on a stacked UFC 245 pay-per-view (PPV) card in December.

Recently, Volkanovski claimed that he’s looking past Holloway already, and is extremely confident he’s going to put the Hawaiian away. In fact, the Australian said he believes he’s too much for Holloway to handle. Speaking to MMA Junkie on a media day at UFC 243 this week, Volkanovski clarified his comments.

He noted he wasn’t saying he’s looking past Holloway, but is willing to do everything necessary to become the greatest featherweight of all time. Even if it means fighting “Blessed” twice.

“Next year, I’m looking to be the greatest featherweight of all time,” Volkanovski said. “A lot of people are twisting my words and saying that I’m looking through Max and I want a rematch. I was actually saying I want to be the greatest featherweight, and if I have to beat him again, then that’s what I’ll do to prove to the world that I’m the greatest featherweight of all time.”

Of course, he’ll face a tough task in Holloway, who has already established himself as the greatest featherweight of all time; with wins over Jose Aldo (twice), Frankie Edgar, Brian Ortega, and more.

What do you think about Volkanovski being willing to fight Holloway twice to become the greatest featherweight of all time?

Initially, Sergio Pettis was scheduled to face Kai Kara-France at UFC 245 on pay-per-view (PPV). According to a report from ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, Pettis’ December 14 fight has been put on hold, as he will test out free agency after his contract with the UFC has expired.

The report noted Pettis was allowed to explore other options after it was realized his contract with the UFC had expired. Pettis is not ruling out a return to the Las Vegas-based promotion but does want to see what other opportunities are available to him as well. It remains unclear if the UFC plans to keep the fight between Pettis and Kara-France on the card, or if Kara-France will remain on the card with a new opponent.

The 26-year-old Pettis comes off a unanimous decision victory over Tyson Nam, ending a two-fight losing streak. Throughout his UFC run, Pettis owns victories over notable names such as John Moraga, Brandon Moreno, and Joseph Benavidez. He attempted a run at bantamweight in his fight against Rob Font last December, only to lose via decision.

Now, Pettis will explore free agency with a victory under his belt and no shortage of possible landing spots with promotions such as Bellator MMA and ONE Championship always looking to add to their respective rosters.

What do you think about Pettis wanting to test free agency? Will he return to the UFC?

Colby Covington will finally be fighting for the title as he gets to settle his business when he takes on Kamaru Usman at UFC 245. The two do not like each other and have had a feud going on for quite some time now.

Both of them said the other one was not accepting the fight and ducking each other. Yet, on Dec. 14 at UFC 245, the two will finally meet where Colby Covington expects to hear ‘And New’ as he envisions knocking out the champion.

“I see a third-round knockout finish. He’s not going to last in the late rounds and he’s going to find out really quick that he’s not as good as he thinks he is. He sucks at fighting, he’s had an easy road to get there. He came in and beat all my sloppy seconds and now he thinks he’s God,” Colby Covington said to James Lynch of theScore MMA (h/t BJPENN.com). “Now he’s running into God, and he’s going to find out on Dec. 14, he will be finished inside three rounds. Mark my words you heard it here first [with] James Lynch, take it to the bank.”

Whether or not that happens is to be seen. But, Colby Covington is confident he will be too much for Kamaru Usman and hand him another loss as he becomes the welterweight champion.
