UFC heavyweight Derrick Lewis is not looking for a long layoff.
Lewis made it two wins in a row after a tight split decision win over Ilir Latifi in the main card of UFC 247 last night in Houston, Texas.
There was a big debate as to whether he should have won the fight. After all, Latifi controlled him on the ground in the second round and for majority of the third. However, Lewis unleashed a flurry in the final minute that ultimately saw him get the nod.
And he believes his overall work on the feet is what got him the victory:
“I knew it would be a close call, especially with the takedowns, but most of his shots I was blocking and I was controlling him,” Lewis told media after the fight (via MMA Junkie). “All he got were the takedowns. The flying knees just came from being in better shape.”
Regardless, “The Black Beast” is now on a winning streak again and most of all, he didn’t sustain any injuries. He wants to remain active and is even willing to be the backup for the UFC Columbus main event on March 28.
That event will notably headlined by a heavyweight bout between heavy-hitters Francis Ngannou and Jairzinho Rozenstruik.
“I’m healthy right now,” he added. “There is nothing wrong with me, so I can come back in for a quick replacement for (Jairzinho) Rozenstruik vs. (Francis) Ngannou (at UFC Columbus) if needed. I’m ready whenever.”

Lee took on Lauren Murphy in the prelims of UFC 247 on Saturday night in Houston, Texas. Many felt she did more than enough to win the bout — after all, every media member scored the fight her way.
However, she ended up losing a split decision much to the shock of the mixed martial arts world. To make matters worse, commentators Joe Rogan and Dominick Cruz noticed one of the judges wasn’t paying attention during the fight.
It compounded a night full of judging mishaps, most notably in the main event between Jon Jones and Dominick Reyes where one judge bewilderingly gave the former a 49-46 scorecard.
And Lee now wants to see proof of the judge not paying attention. She went on to add in her statement that such judges should not be given the opportunity to oversee a fight ever again:
“If anyone has video or pictures of the judge who was on his phone during the fights, please send them to me,” she wrote on Instagram. “I just think that if you’re there to judge fights, you should be watching the fight and not on your phone, therefore I think that judge should not have the opportunity to sit cage side and judge fights ever again, especially when there are plenty of other judges who were better qualified and more deserving.”
It should be interesting to see if there are any new developments or updates following the abysmal judging on Saturday night.
UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko remains atop the 125-pound mountain. Shevchenko retained her strap in the co-main event of UFC 247 on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, finishing Katlyn Chookagian in the third round. “The Bullet” put on a masterful performance, showing just how far ahead she is from everyone else in the division. It left the mixed martial arts (MMA) community wondering who could challenge Shevchenko next.
Speaking at her post-fight press conference, Shevchenko said, after taking a look at the rankings, she has three potential names in mind. Those being Joanne Calderwood, Jennifer Maia, and Roxanne Modafferi. (H/T MMA Junkie)
“We just watched the rankings of flyweight with Laura Sanko, and it was after Katlyn (Chookagain) (and) Jessica Eye. It was Joanne Calderwood, Jennifer Maia, and Roxanne Modafferi,” Shevchenko said. “These three girls I think are strong fighters. They have very good skills. Each one, they have different styles of fighting. I would love to fight any one of them.”
The 33-year-old Calderwood is currently ranked No. 3 in the division and has won three of her last four fights. The only loss in her last four came to Chookagian, who challenged for the title last night. Maia is actually coming off of a loss to Chookagian in November at UFC 244.
Before that, she was on a two-fight win streak against Alexis Davis and Modafferi. Also, the aforementioned Modafferi, a longtime veteran in the sport, has had a spotty record over the years but comes off of a big upset win over Maycee Barber. These are all great suggestions, however, many would also like to see Shevchenko take part in some superfights next. Potential opponents include UFC women’s bantamweight and featherweight champion Amanda Nunes, or strawweight champ Weili Zhang.
However, Zhang will put her title up for grabs against Joanna Jedrzejczyk on March 7 at UFC 248. Shevchenko has already defeated Jedrzejczyk in both Muay Thai and MMA competition. It will be interesting to see what the UFC decides to do with Shevchenko next.
What do you think about Shevchenko suggesting Calderwood, Maia, and Modafferi as potential opponents?

There was a ton of controversy surrounding the scoring of last night’s (Sat. February 8, 2020) main event at UFC 247.
Jon Jones put his light heavyweight championship on the line against Dominick Reyes. Jones and Reyes went five rounds in a very close fight, that many believe Reyes actually should’ve won on the scorecards, giving the challenger the first three rounds, while the final two were fairly clear for “Bones.” With that being said, the Texas judging awarded Jones the decision win by way of a unanimous decision.
Even one judge scored the fight 4-1 for Jones, a scorecard Joe Rogan called “insane.” However, according to Conor McGregor and SBG Ireland head coach John Kavanagh, he scored it a fairly “clear victory” for the defending champion. Taking to Twitter, Kavanagh explained that, even though he’s probably wrong to do so, he scores the championship rounds higher than the first three.
“I know I’m wrong to do what I do because I’m not a trained judge but I will always weight later rounds more heavily than earlier ones. I ask myself who would survive a no time/rule encounter. Because of that it was a clear @JonnyBones victory for me.”
It will be interesting to see how the UFC handles things with Jones and the light heavyweight division moving forward. The consensus within the MMA community seems to be that the judging in Houston was horrendous, and Reyes was not given a fair shake. Given that, there has already been chatter of an immediate rematch, something even UFC president Dana White hasn’t shut down.
What do you think about Kavanagh scoring the UFC 247 main event for Jones?
