Tony Kelley, Andrea Lee

UFC bantamweight Tony Kelley has come under fire for his recent corner work for Andrea Lee at UFC Vegas 54.

Last night, Tony Kelley was working in the corner of Andrea Lee in her clash with Viviane Araujo. Kicking the event off in the featured prelims, Araujo managed to secure a victory over Lee via unanimous decision.

It wasn’t her performance that got most people talking. On a night full of exciting fights, one of the biggest talking points was Kelley’s racist remarks during Lee’s fight.

Kelley shared some not so wise words of encouragement to pump up Lee for the next round.

“That’s what they’re gonna do. They’re dirty f******* Brazilians. They’re gonna f****** cheat like that. Guess what? We came to f**** somebody up.”

As expected, members of the MMA community were not pleased with the derogatory remarks made by Kelley. Brazilian fighters took to Twitter to express their disapproval along with Kelley’s next opponent Adrian Yanez.

“My guy @yanezmma get a finish on your next fight and I will send you an extra money #UFCVegas54

Tony Kelley responds to the backlash

Following the criticism he faced for his comments, Tony Kelley has now responded to the backlash he received after the event. Kelley seems to be content with his behavior and feels what he said to be okay.

He opened up on what he was talking about when he said “dirty f**king Brazilians” as he referenced a “dirty eye poke”. Taking to Twitter to share his thoughts, Kelley defended his statements.

“Cancel Culture is real. What I said was real and in the heat of battle, and in no way had any type of racist connotations meant…but if that’s the way you take it, idgaf. So many people quick to say racist..that shits getting so old. My reference was to a dirty eye poke.”

Lee has received her end of the criticism as well for her dating choices. In the past, Lee was rebuked by the community for dating a man with Nazi tattoos who eventually ended up assaulting her. Members were quick to point out her taste in men after Kelley’s pep talk.

“Ok that corner work was terrible Lee keeps dating racists”

UFC bantamweight Tony Kelley is being criticized for Anti-Brazilian comments made to Andrea Lee during the UFC Vegas 54 event.

During the UFC Vegas 54 preliminary card, Andrea Lee was involved in an action-packed fight against Brazilian opponent and #8-ranked women’s flyweight Viviane Araujo. Araujo would go on to win the fight via unanimous decision.

Between rounds, Kelley could be heard giving Lee some interesting corner advice that categorized Brazilians, such as Araujo, as dirty cheaters. You can find his comments below.

“That’s what they’re gonna do. They’re dirty fuckin’ Brazilians. They’re gonna fuckin’ cheat like that. Guess what? We came to fuck somebody up!”

It wasn’t long until these comments began to go viral, with members of the MMA community taking exception to Kelley’s controversial remarks.

“Ok that corner work was terrible. Lee keeps dating racists,” wrote top-5 UFC middleweight Belal Muhammad.

“Tony Kelley in the corner: “That’s what they’re going to do, they’re dirty f*cking Brazilians, they’re going to f*cking cheat like that.” Unacceptable…” MMA reporter Aaron Bronsteter wrote.

Former welterweight title challenger Gilbert Burns even put an MMA bounty on Kelley’s head addressed directly to his June 18th opponent Adrian Yanez. Yanez responded by informing Burns that he would gladly dispose of Kelley for free.

“My guy @yanezmma get a finish on your next fight and I will send you an extra money,” Burns wrote.

“Aaayyyyy, but this finish will be on the house,” the Mexican-American Yanez responded beneath a series of Brazilian flag emojis.

Kelley’s hot-mic remarks are reminiscent of Colby Covington’s infamous 2017 promo where he called the Brazilian audience “filthy animals,” thus kicking off his current heel run.

As for Lee, Belal Muhammad’s remarks accusing her of dating “racists” is in reference to her ex-husband and former coach Donny Aaron, who was confirmed to have Nazi/white supremacist tattoos. Though Aaron expressed regret for the tattoos, he also stated that he would not have them removed.

Lee defended Aaron at the time, stating that neither of them was racist and that he got the tattoos during a different stage of his life. She went on to say that Aaron was a changed and loving man. The couple would split months later after Aaron was arrested for domestically battering her.

What are your thoughts on Tony Kelley’s remarks and the backlash that accompanied them?

It goes without saying, that Cynthia Calvillo is as tough as they come.

Heading into UFC Vegas 42, Calvillo was in pretty serious need of a win, having lost two of her last three. Unfortunately, she would receive her third loss in a row when her corner stopped the bout with Andrea Lee. The stoppage came between the second and third round and was due to the immense amount of damage she was taking and the serious swelling around her eye.

As it turns out, to the surprise of few, that swelling was so bad because Lee had broken the orbital bone of Calvillo. She revealed with a post to her Instagram that the orbital got broken at the end of the first round, but she fought through the entire second round, before the corner stoppage.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CWb69mhPT_j/

“Dark places bring out the best in me. I’ve had worse losses than this in life. Orbital broken in the 1st round and people count me out. I know what i’m capable of. I’m a fighter no matter what they say. Thank you to all who still believe in me, I feel it. To the rest, I see it ??Too many people selling you wolf tickets to the max fighting nobodies! “pay my bills” i’ll beat their ass. The real ones know the truth. Talk your shit!!!” Calvillo wrote.

Given the information, fans should hold their tongues if trying to say that Cynthia Calvillo is a quitter because she did not make it out for the third round. Aside from the fact that it was a decision made by her corner, she already fought through a broken orbital for one round and there was no reason to keep taking punishment.

Hopefully, it will not take long for Calvillo to heal up so she can get back to action. With three losses in a row, hopefully she will be able to get back on the right path.

Andrea Lee believes she could be the fresh new challenge for Valentina Shevchenko.

Lee was regarded as one of the most promising flyweight prospects in the UFC. However, a three-fight losing streak stopped her momentum in a big way.

“KGB” has since bounced back with two consecutive victories with her latest being a second-round TKO win over Cynthia Calvillo at UFC Vegas 42 last night.

Right back on track again, Lee is already setting her sights on her next outing.

“There’s going to be a fight in Houston in February, and that’s the day after my birthday,” Lee said after her win (via MMA Junkie). “I don’t (have an opponent), but anyone in the top five for sure. The closer to home, the better, and I would love to fight in front of a crowd.”

Andrea Lee Would Love To Be Fresh Face

A win over a top-five opponent could set Lee up for title contention with current champion Shevchenko still yet to be tested at all during her run at 125 pounds.

The domination from Shevchenko has almost made her fights boring and unexciting in a way as we more or less know what to expect.

Lee, however, is hoping to change that soon by being a fresh and new opponent for the queen of the flyweights.

“For sure, (Valentina Shevchenko) is probably looking for a fresh face, and I know the UFC is looking for a fresh face and I’d love to be that one,” Lee added. “We’ll see what happens. I’m trying to earn it and I’m trying to deserve it. I don’t want to leapfrog over everybody. I want to earn it and I want to deserve it.

“Valentina is pretty close to perfect. She doesn’t have a whole lot of weaknesses, but I’m hoping to get out there and bring it to her some day and give the fans something to watch.”

Do you think Andrea Lee will challenge Valentina Shevchenko for her title soon?

Hometown Texan favourite, Andrea ‘KBG’ Lee has snapped her three-fight slide under the UFC’s banner, scoring a buzzer-beating second round armbar with over Antonina Shevchenko during the preliminary section of UFC 262.

Involved in largely a striking battle in the opening round, Lee got to work early in the second, scoring a pair of impactful judo throws on Shevchenko, before assuming full mount momentarily.

Setting up a mounted triangle, Lee then transitioned to her back before attempting to create an angle to find the finish for the following three minutes and change.

Transitioning between a triangle and an armbar as Shevchenko, the elder sister of undisputed flyweight queen, Valentina Shevchenko defended well. Throwing up an armbar before the ten-second in-round warning, Lee eventually forced the tap from Shevchenko — scoring her first victory since June of 2019.

Below, catch the highlights from Lee’s armbar stoppage over Shevchenko.
