UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones admitted he wasn’t sure if he was winning his fight against Dominick Reyes throughout.
Jones remains the champion after narrowly defending his title against Reyes in the UFC 247 headliner on Saturday night. Many felt Reyes had done enough to get the win, especially after his impressive performance in the first three rounds.
However, Jones rallied late on and ended the fight strong to get the unanimous verdict of the judges. Despite notching yet another win, “Bones” wasn’t always confident he was winning the fight. But he knew he was never going to give up:
“I wasn’t always confident that I was winning the fight,” Jones said at the UFC 247 post-fight press conference. “I was confident that I wasn’t going to be giving up or slowing down. Greg Jackson said to me, ‘Jon, you may need to win this fifth round to win.’ And the heart of a champion said, ‘No problem, coach. I can do that for you. I can leave it all out there.’
“And five minutes left, I think I displayed the difference between a champion and an extraordinary contender. He had all the tools, he had the endurance. Something special happens when it’s a time for the champion present himself. You guys saw it tonight in the fifth round.”
While there have been calls for an instant rematch — which Jones has been open to — he remains adamant that he did enough to win the fight. In fact, the champion believes he would edge Reyes out every single time:
“It was close but he lost,” Jones added. “He can try 1,000 times and I believe I’ll edge him every single time.”

Jon Jones is still the UFC’s light heavyweight champion of the world.
Jones put his title on the line against Dominick Reyes in the UFC 247 pay-per-view (PPV) main event from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. The fight went all five rounds in what was an instant classic. However, when it was all said and done, the Texas judges awarded Jones the unanimous decision victory. This was much to the disappointment of the mixed martial arts (MMA) community, who largely felt that Reyes did enough to get the nod.
With that being said, no one can deny that it was one of the hardest fights Jones has ever been a part of. However, it isn’t the most difficult he’s ever been a part of, according to Jones himself. Speaking to Aaron Bronsteter after the event, Jones said he thinks his first fight with Alexander Gustafsson in 2013 was more difficult.
“I think the first Gustafsson fight, honestly,” Jones said. “Just based on – well it’s hard to base it on anything, I haven’t seen the fight yet. But I would say the first Gustafsson fight was a little bit tougher.”
Reyes came out very fast against Jones, throwing hard shots and fighting very aggressively. The strategy seemingly worked well, but as Jones pointed out, Reyes showed his hand early, and he began to deal with things a lot better as the fight went on.
“Yeah, he did, but he also showed me what his best weapons were, and as you saw the fight go on, I started to deal with them a lot better,” Jones said.
The fight was undoubtedly close, and Jones was well aware. However, he also knew that the takedowns he landed in the fight, and the fact that he ran away with the fifth and final round, should’ve been well reflected on the scorecards and earned him the victory.
“I honestly didn’t know, I knew it was close, but I knew my takedowns had to count form something,” Jones said. “Takedowns, we know, aren’t always the most exciting thing, but they’re big points in MMA. And at one point I had his back with a hook in. I took him down to his butt on more than one occasion. At least two or three times, the fifth round was so one-sided. I feel good about the win, I just can’t wait to see it.”
There has been a lot of talk about an immediate rematch between the pair given the scoring controversy and how close the fight was. Jones said he won’t be able to make a determination on that until he has sat back and seen the fight.
“It’ll be easier to say that after I watch the fight.”
What do you think about Jones’ comment that his first fight with Alexander Gustafsson was more difficult than his fight with Reyes?
Dominick Reyes surprised many with his performance against Jon Jones — including the champion himself. Reyes took Jones the distance in their light heavyweight title fight at UFC 247 on Saturday night. Many felt “The Devastator” had done enough to win the fight, especially based on his performance in the first three rounds.
However, Jones was able to end the fight strong and come away with the unanimous decision victory — even if the verdict was controversial.
But given how many had overlooked Reyes leading up to the event, his performance was all the more impressive and Jones had some encouraging words for him after the fight.
“I’d like to fight him again,” Reyes said at the UFC 247 post-fight press conference. “At the very end of everything, he was like ‘dude, you’re the real deal. I did not expect that from you.’ I’m like, ‘I know. I saw it in your face.’ He said, ‘when we rematch, it’s going to be epic.’”
Reyes was understandably disappointed at the result and felt he was “disrespected” by the one judge who bewilderingly scored the fight 49-46 to Jones. He believes he won the fight and will be looking for a rematch.
A rematch would certainly make the most sense at this point and UFC president Dana White seems to agree as well.
We’ll just have to see if that’s what pans out next.
How do you think a potential rematch would go between Jones and Reyes?
