It’s looking increasingly likely that UFC 250 won’t go ahead in Brazil next month.
The event is currently set to take place May 9 in Sao Paulo’s Ibirapuera gymnasium with a bantamweight title fight between Henry Cejudo and Jose Aldo set to headline the show. A women’s featherweight title fight between Amanda Nunes and Felicia Spencer was also announced for the card.
But as the ongoing COVID-19 situation continues to affect the world, including Brazil where there are over 13,700 cases and over 650 deaths as of Tuesday, it appears the event will likely be relocated elsewhere.
That is more so the case following the news that the Ibirapuera gymnasium will now be used as a field hospital for patients infected with the coronavirus (via MMA Fighting).
In addition, the sports complex is not expected to be available for events until September later this year. However, that could change depending on how the situation unfolds in the coming weeks and months.
UFC president Dana White has been resolute in his plans to resume the fight schedule starting April 18 with UFC 249 which is expected to take place on tribal land in California. The UFC head honcho has also seemingly acquired a private island to host events for international fighters.
Perhaps UFC 250 will be the first card to take place on this island.
Where do you think UFC 250 will take place, if it does at all?
Dominick Cruz is more than willing to step in and fight Henry Cejudo for the bantamweight title. Dominick Cruz is more than willing to step in and fight Henry Cejudo for the bantamweight title. Cejudo is currently set to defend his title against Jose Aldo in the UFC 250 headliner in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on May 9.
However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, there is an increased possibility UFC 250 not only doesn’t take place in Brazil, but that Aldo could have trouble leaving the country as well if it were relocated to the United States.
Should that be the case, “The Dominator” is ready to slide in for a chance to regain the bantamweight title once again:
“Now he [Cejudo] is saying that Aldo may not be able to get in, and Yan may not be able to get in,” Cruz told Ariel Helwani recently. “And now the MMA world can know that this fight is a real possibility.
“That’s really the situation is that since they can’t come in, it opens up a slot for me to slide in there. And I will always take a fight with the title. You know what I mean? That’s what we do this for, you slide in and take the title shot when it’s there. And realistically, with Aldo and Yan out and this opportunity there, why wouldn’t I take it? That’s what I have been asking for a long time.”
Cruz hasn’t competed since losing his bantamweight title to Cody Garbrandt back in December 2016. However, he seems to be targeting a comeback in 2020 and has repeatedly gone back-and-forth with Cejudo in recent months.
“However, I also believe that Henry has a habit of saying things just to get hype to get people talking about it, or to get people to talk about him,” he added.

Amanda Nunes and Felicia Spencer are both receptive to the idea of having their women’s featherweight title fight take place in Florida.
The pair were set to collide in the co-main event of UFC 250 which takes place May 9 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. However, given the coronavirus pandemic putting a halt to life around the world, there is a possibility the show will not go ahead.
Spencer has an idea, however. With both fighters living in Florida, she suggested that they compete in the Sunshine State instead.
“@Amanda_Leoa we both live in ?? Florida, let’s get #UFC250 ?to our back yard?. Please don’t leave! ? @Mickmaynard2 @danawhite @ufc”
“Sorry. Just seeing this. I’m not going anywhere, girl. I think that’s a great idea. Let’s do this.”
Of course, that’s easier said than done.
While Florida was one of the few states that initially didn’t issue a statewide lockdown, Governor Ron DeSantis has now issued an order allowing for only essential activities and services.
In addition, he previously issued an executive “safer-at-home” order for the Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Monroe counties as per MMA Fighting.
Then again, given UFC president Dana White’s refusal to stop booking events, who knows?
Do you think the fight should be postponed or go ahead in Florida?
