It looks like we may get a welterweight title fight at UFC 251 after all. Kamaru Usman was expected to defend his 170-pound title against Gilbert Burns in the event headliner taking place July 11 on Abu Dhabi’s Fight Island.
However, Burns had to pull out after testing positive for COVID-19. The likes of Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal offered to step in, but it seemed as if the UFC was content with making the featherweight title fight between Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway as the new headliner.
Until now.
Usman vs. Masvidal To Finally Take Place?
According to multiple reports (first reported by ESPN), negotiations are now underway to book a welterweight championship bout between Usman and Masvidal. Talks aren’t close to being finalized, but they are ongoing with both sides believing there is a path to making a fight come to fruition.
To make matters more interesting, Masvidal underwent a test for COVID-19 on Saturday as per his manager.
This was originally the fight to make until negotiations went downhill on Masvidal’s side with “Gamebred” later getting embroiled in a public spat with the UFC over fighter pay. As a result, Burns was given the title shot.
It should be interesting to see if both parties can come to an agreement this time around. Of course, there are other hurdles such as the fact that Usman and Masvidal are still in the United States.
Hopefully, things turn out for the best and we keep a third title fight.
Do you think we’ll see Usman vs. Masvidal at UFC 251 next week?

Holloway Had No Training Partners
However, he won’t be at his optimum best.
That’s because of the restrictions he had to face due to Hawaii’s strict stay-at-home orders during the pandemic. That involved having to be coached through Zoom calls as well as no training partners to spar with in his fight camp.
In fact, “Blessed” only met his coaches in-person for the first time in months on Friday when they met up in Las Vegas before the UFC’s chartered flight took them to Abu Dhabi.
Despite the less than ideal camp, Holloway realized he was putting too much effort in previous camps and actually enjoyed having one without sparring.
“Everything we were doing was through Zoom,” Holloway told Ariel Helwani on Friday. “If you got caught at the gym because there was a lockdown and stuff, we could all get arrested. It was a little bit more of a sacrifice on my end. If I went there, they see my butt out there, they’ll be like, ‘yeah, let’s get this guy,’ make a point and put fear into other people. We did it smart, did what we could. I stayed home, did a bunch of training at home.
“… Solo [no training partners]. … No sparring at all. I actually kind of like it. First time not sparring. I was a big believer in sparring. … This camp actually opened my eyes like man, I don’t even have to spar that much even more. I’m at a point in my career where I know how to punch, I know how to kick, I know how to apply it so I sparred.”
Volkanovski, however, isn’t buying it.
“To be quite honest, I don’t believe that,” the Aussie told ESPN. “That’s all s—. Whether he’s doing it to cover things on his end — I don’t want to accuse him of anything — but we had to get exemptions to train, so I couldn’t train until I got that done. So there was a lot that needed to happen for the government.
“Again, I’m not going to accuse him of anything, but I don’t believe that he hasn’t been training. I’m preparing for a fully prepared Max either way.”
Regardless, we will all get to see what the results of Holloway’s camp will be in a week.
What do you make of Holloway’s less than ideal fight camp?

UFC 251 takes place July 11 on Abu Dhabi’s Fight Island and initially had three title fights headlined by the welterweight championship bout between Kamaru Usman and Gilbert Burns.
However, it was revealed on Friday that Burns had tested positive for COVID-19 and would no longer be competing on the card. Although the likes of Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal offered to step in, the featherweight title rematch between Volkanovski and Holloway — the original co-main event — will now headline the card.
Volkanovski, Holloway: This Is The Real Main Event
Given the overall strength of the card, it wasn’t as big a blow as it may have been on another card.
And for some, the new main event should have been the headliner all along. Volkanovski and Holloway certainly feel that way.
“This was the real main event,” Volkanovski told ESPN. “A lot of people thought this was the main event, so it’s in its rightful place.”
“Nothing changes,” Holloway said. “I feel like we were already the main event.”
Volkanovski will defend his featherweight title for the first time when he meets Holloway in the new UFC 251 headliner. The Aussie dethroned “Blessed” when are outpointing him over five rounds at UFC 245 back in December.
