Gilbert Burns is expecting a war against Kamaru Usman.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Burns would be next in line to challenge Usman for the welterweight title as they will headline UFC 251 taking place July 11 on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi.

Burns and Usman, of course, are notably teammates at Sanford MMA under head coach Henri Hooft.

And although things are a bit awkward, especially as they share many of the same coaches, there are no hard feelings between the pair according to Burns. At least for now.

“It’s awkward. I just ran into him right now in training,” Burns told The Athletic. “He told me the same thing I said to him. He said, “Hey, I love you too, bro. Whatever happens, happens, you know. He said, “I love you too, bro. I know you have your family, I respect you, whatever happens, happens, nothing will change. Let’s leave it all up there.” I said, “You got it.” But, as of now, there’s nothing certain, so it was even a conversation — we say that stuff, and then don’t fight, you know? Then it’s an awkward thing (laughs).”

Burns: Usman Has More Tools Than Woodley

Burns became next in line following his impressive unanimous decision win over Tyron Woodley earlier this month at UFC Vegas. It put him on a four-fight winning streak ever since he made the move back up to 170 in August last year.

While he regarded the former champion as a monster, “Durinho” believes Usman will be an even tougher task not only because of his skillset, but also considering how their training sessions together have always been wars.

“He’s extremely tough. It will be a war,” Burns said. “All of our training sessions are wars. There’s none of that, “I won in training, he won in training.” Sure, but it’s war. I’ve never had easy training with him. He’s very skilled. He’s been improving a lot on the feet. He does the same system I do, which is Henry’s. He never lost his wrestling, he’s always trained wrestling a lot. He trains jiu-jitsu. He’s extremely strong. Has a good gas tank. Man — it will be a war.

“In my mind, that’s another monster. I had Woodley very much like a monster. When I fight, I like to be prepared for a monster. And it ended up that, after the third, fourth round — (Woodley) is still dangerous with that hand, but I didn’t feel that strength on the clinch, I didn’t feel danger with the kicks, it was mostly about being aware of his right hand. But I know Kamaru has a lot more stamina and a lot more tools. It’s an entirely different fight. Kamaru won’t have that rock in his right hand, but he will also hit hard. If he lands in the right spot, he can have me sitting down, too. I will have to be prepared for war.”

If Burns does go on to win the welterweight title against Usman, it would be one heck of a past 12 months for the Brazilian.

Khabib Nurmagomedov made his picks for the upcoming UFC 251 pay-per-view.

On Tuesday, it was officially announced by Dana White that UFC 251 would take place July 11 on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi. The first Fight Island card is certainly stacked as three title fights will be on show.

In the main event, Kamaru Usman will defend his welterweight title against the streaking Gilbert Burns. In the co-main event, featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski meets Max Holloway in a rematch. Finally, Jose Aldo and Petr Yan will collide for the vacant bantamweight strap.

All three fights are intriguing ones and UFC lightweight champion Nurmagomedov chipped in with how he sees them going.

“Usman, Yan, Holloway,” he wrote on Instagram (via ESPN MMA).

Nurmagomedov Set To Compete Soon?

As for Nurmagomedov, he could be in action soon as well.

It was reported earlier today that a lightweight title unification fight between him and interim champion Justin Gaethje was being planned for UFC 253 in September.

Of course, one would imagine if also hinges on what happens with Nurmagomedov’s father who remains in critical condition due to COVID-19. Hopefully, everything works out for the best for the Nurmagomedovs.

“The Eagle” last competed in September last year when he submitted Dustin Poirier to retain his lightweight title.

Usman Burns Diaz

Kamaru Usman and Gilbert Burns were quick to fire back at Nate Diaz.

After it was revealed that Usman would defend his welterweight title against teammates Burns in the UFC 251 headliner on July 11, Diaz slammed the title fight and mocked the pair for fighting for less money.

“This is what’s wrong with people claiming they’re fighters settling for less cause they know they’re not worth sh*t you should’ve fought the next guy in line not the guy who would take less cause he’s told too that’s why no one will remember you guys. This isn’t a title fight”

Diaz proceeded to take another jab at the pair.

Usman would respond to Diaz soon after with a number of tweets.

“Funny I didn’t hear you volunteering when they were looking for the next victim… ?????

“Your Bum Ass, the other “said guy” who just embarrassed your ass, and McNuggets Bum ass all ran and hid. So shut TF up and Sit TF down. Oh and don’t forget to buy the PPV ??? #UFC251

“Let’s state some facts here:

“Your Bum Ass”
•L’s in last (5 of 9) in 8year span
•12 L’s Total
•1-1 in last 4 years
•Refused to fight Woodley when offered title shot.

“Said Guy”
•13 L’s Total
•L to Damian Maia
Who was KO’d by Burns In rd 1.
•embarrassed ur Bum Ass

“Burns:
•6 Fight win streak in less than 2 year span.
•KO over Maia who defeated “said guy”
•(50-44) domination over #1 WW Woodley who you turned down for a title fight.
•Burns Is a true martial artist and not all talk. #UFC251

“Bottom line, if you got double digit L’s shut TF up and sit yo Bum Ass TF down. Oh and once again don’t forget to buy the PPV ???

“Durinho” also took a jab at Diaz’s record.

“Look this guy ?????????? @NateDiaz209 3 fights in the last 4 years! I’m going to do my 3rd fight in less than 5 months in 2020! Enough said! Just a reminder this fight will be the Champion x N1 Contender! Just do me a favor don’t blink your ? get your ? and buy the PPV”

Fighter pay will continue to be major topic in the coming weeks.

However, it’s hard to see why Burns wouldn’t accept the opportunity, especially given he only moved up to welterweight in August last year.
