Jones Adesanya

Jon Jones remains a betting favorite over Israel Adesanya. However, the odds have shifted compared to previous months.

Adesanya enjoyed an impressive second-round TKO win over Paulo Costa in the UFC 253 headliner to defend his middleweight title for the second time.

Following the fight, he spoke of facing Jared Cannonier next, but didn’t rule out a Jones fight in the future as he still plans to “f*ck up” the former light heavyweight champion who he has developed a rivalry with since early last year.

That led to a response from Jones who questioned Adesanya’s hesitation in fighting him now rather than waiting to fight him in the future. Whether the two will fight soon or in a couple of years remains to be seen.

However, that led to oddsmakers posting updated betting odds about the potential super fight and they are certainly interesting. As per BetOnline.ag, Jones is a -150 favorite while Adesanya is a +130 underdog.

That means you would have to bet $150 to win $100 on Jones winning while a $100 bet on Adesanya would net you $130 in profit. What makes these odds interesting is the fact nearly a year ago — after Adesanya became middleweight champion — “Bones” was as high as a -550 favorite while Adesanya was a +375 underdog.

Adesanya’s recent performance against Costa has certainly played a role in those shifting odds as well as a below-par performance from Jones in his last fight against Dominick Reyes in February this year.

Dan Hardy Labels Israel Adesanya’s Post-Fight Celebration As ‘Crass,’ ‘Unnecessary’

Adesanya Hardy

UFC commentator and analyst Dan Hardy believes Israel Adesanya’s post-fight celebration against Paulo Costa was crass and unnecessary.

Adesanya defended his middleweight title against Costa following an impressive second-round TKO win during their grudge match at UFC 253 this past weekend.

“The Last Stylebender” notably humped Costa as the referee stopped the fight in an action that went viral on social media. Costa was understandably not happy once he learned of what Adesanya did and as far as Hardy is concerned, it’s something that isn’t good for the sport.

Even if believes fighters should be themselves.

“It was crass, is the truth,” Hardy said at a recent media scrum (via MMA Fighting).”It was unnecessary and it was crass. It’s not good for the sport to be seeing those things, but at the same time we see a lot of the superstars they stand out, they create headlines because of the thing that they do. [Adesanya] was urinating on the octagon in his UFC debut. We shouldn’t be surprised by these things.

“There’s a lot of animosity between these guys and we do act out when we’re in these scenarios. When your adrenaline’s up, you’ve just won the fight, you’ve got all this energy. How many times do you see people doing terrible dances after fights and stuff? I’ve done it myself. You don’t know what you’re saying in interviews because your adrenaline’s going, you’re just ‘blllaaaaah!’ It happens. Sometimes it’s difficult to keep control of yourselves in those circumstances, but that’s when you see someone like that and you kind of think, well, it wasn’t in the spirit of martial arts and really that’s what we want to be seeing, to represent the sport as a whole. But ultimately, these people have to be their individual selves.”

As for the fight itself, Hardy believes Costa wasn’t ready to go five rounds in what was his first main event with the promotion.

That said, it was always going to be a tough task against someone as skilled as Adesanya.

“If you’re a three-round fighter and you’re fighting over five rounds, you may not be able to elevate your conditioning to five rounds,” Hardy said. “You may just have to manage that energy system. So starting hard and going fast for three rounds and then having to fight when you’re gassed and you’re trying to defend yourself against Adesanya is not the smart thing to do. So if I was in Costa’s corner I would have probably said the same thing: Take it easy the first round, don’t give him too much to search on, don’t give him too much research, don’t give him too much to kind of figure out and set you up. But unfortunately I just don’t think that Costa had the operating system against Izzy to be able to understand what was going on when he was in the pocket.

“You remember when Anderson Silva came into the sport, it was like witchcraft. He’s in there and people just don’t know what to do. We’ve got guys like Chris Leben that come crashing forward and knocking people out, couldn’t lay a hand on Anderson Silva, and there’s something very disconcerting about that. When you know that you normally close distance and hurt people pretty quickly and you can’t touch them. I think it was 12 strikes that he landed in the total fight. It was just a spectacular performance from Izzy, he manages range so well. It must be very much like fighting Khabib [Nurmagomedov]. You can’t really understand what his wrestling’s like until he’s got his hands on you. I think when you stand in front of Israel Adesanya, you can’t really understand what that’s like until it’s there. And when it’s there, it’s too late.”

Paulo Costa finally learned what Israel Adesanya did to him following their UFC 253 middleweight title fight this past weekend.

Adesanya enjoyed a dominant victory over Costa in their heated grudge match after a second-round TKO win. However, what went viral was Adesanya humping Costa as the referee called an end to the fight to send a message to the Brazilian.

It appears Costa only just found out about it as he took to Instagram to post a video about Adesanya’s actions on Monday.

“I come here to talk about the action that human trash did, that human trash did after the fight,” Costa said. “I didn’t see when I was there in the cage but I saw now, and I disapprove 100 percent. … Nobody can stop me, nobody can stop me. I want my rematch.

“You know, something happened before the fight. I’m not giving excuses to my people, my fans, but I will e 100 percent to fight him and make him pay. That’s my words. Save my words.”

Adesanya has already come across the post and made some comments.

“The Last Stylebender” followed it up with an Instagram post of his own.

Costa will definitely need a win or two before he can think of getting a rematch with Adesanya, but one thing is for sure — it looks like their beef will continue for a while.

The UFC 253 headliner didn’t go the way Dana White expected it to.

Israel Adesanya successfully defended his middleweight title against Paulo Costa following a dominant second-round TKO win on Saturday night.

Many were anticipating the matchup for months given the styles of the two fighters, especially Costa who is known for his pressure and volume. However, “The Eraser” chose to showboat and clown around while receiving damage from Adesanya in the process.

When he did attempt to engage, he had very little success landing on Adesanya. In the end, “The Last Stylebender” was able to catch Costa and drop him en route to the TKO finish.

And while White had praise for Adesanya’s performance, he was left feeling underwhelmed because of how Costa performed.

“So much for ‘Fight of the Year’ – it was ‘Domination of the Year,’” White said at the post-fight news conference (via MMA Junkie). “It was weird because if you look at every other fight that Costa has had, he comes out and goes after people like they owe him money. I think he landed one jab in this fight. He didn’t try to clinch on the fence, didn’t try to put pressure, kept going back to the center of the octagon. It was very weird.

“If he fought the way he fights – I mean look at the way he fought Yoel Romero, one of the most dangerous guys ever, and then he stays on the outside, taking damage to that front leg (against Adesanya). Then when he does rush in and get him up against the cage, he backs out to the center of the cage again. (He) never tried to get in the clinch. I think he only landed one jab (and) didn’t really thrown any punches when (Adesanya) threw kicks. It was very weird. I just sat there going, ‘Holy (explicit).’ Obviously Adesanya went to work, pieced him piece by piece, made it look really easy.”

While Adesanya’s previous fight with Yoel Romero deserved uproar according to White, this time, the champion certainly wasn’t to blame as he ended up winning in convincing fashion.

“No matter what, it was Adesanya put on a clinic,” White added. “The first three calf kicks busted up his leg and got him right in the side of the knee. (He) had a huge welt on the side of the knee, and then the shin to the eye and just absolutely dismantled him. (He) easily won the fight.”
