Cody Garbrandt will be looking to join elite company when he battles Deiveson Figueiredo in the main event of UFC 255.
Garbrandt, who is the former bantamweight champion, will be dropping down to flyweight. Although Garbrandt is a star, many fans were not happy with him getting the title shot. He is just 1-3 in his last four with all three losses coming by knockout. He also has never made 125-pounds. The division has top contenders like Brandon Moreno, Alex Perez, and Askar Askarov all worthy of the title shot.
According to UFC president, Dana White he says he made the fight because Garbrandt wanted it. He also believes it will be a fun fight.
“Well he wanted to, he wanted to move down, he wanted to move down in weight and he wanted to take that opportunity and we loved it,” White said to ESPN (h/t BJPENN.com). So we did it. It will be a fun fight.”
Deiveson Figueiredo won the vacant flyweight title last time out with a first-round submission win over Joseph Benavidez. The Brazilian dominated the fight knocking down Benavidez a couple of times to secure the title win. It was a rematch after they fought in February at UFC Norfolk. Figueiredo won by second-round knockout but he missed weight and an accidental headbutt happened to leave the title to still be vacant.
Cody Garbrandt, meanwhile, returned to the win column back at UFC 250 with a knockout win over Raphael Assuncao. Before that, he suffered KO losses to Pedro Munhoz, and T.J. Dillashaw, twice to lose the bantamweight title after a dominant win over Dominick Cruz to win the strap.
It is no doubt an interesting fight with Figueiredo being a big betting favorite.
What do you make of Dana White’s reason on giving Cody Garbrandt the flyweight title shot?

Shogun Rua and Paul Craig are running it back.
Rua and Craig first met last November in the co-main event of UFC Sao Paulo. Entering the fight, many believed the Brazilian would get his hand raised at home. Yet, that was not the case as Craig won the first round with one judge scoring it a 10-8. Rua then rallied to win the second and third round on two of the three judges scorecards. But, it was not enough as they fought to a split draw with the scorecards being 28-28, 29-28, 28-29.
Now, according to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, Rua and Craig will be running it back on November 21 at UFC 255.
“Shogun Rua vs. Paul Craig 2 is booked for UFC 255 on Nov. 21, sources say. No location yet. The light heavyweights fought to a split draw last November,” Helwani tweeted.
This is a fight many fans thought would happen again and it is a scrap both men have wanted.
“This is a good option. I want this fight, too,” Shogun Rua said after his win. “I want this fight, too, I think (we can do) this fight one more time.”
Shogun Rua is a legend of the sport and has said he only has a couple of fights left. If he goes out and beats Craig he would extend his unbeaten streak to four. He is also a very impressive 5-1-1 in his last seven. The Brazilian is ranked 14th and with a win could get a top-10 guy.
Paul Craig, meanwhile, is ranked 15th in the division and is 5-4-1 inside the Octagon but has notable wins over Magomed Ankalaev and Kennedy Nzechukwu.

In an explosive match up that’s sure to end in with someone laying on the canvas. While women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko is coming back to defend her title against Jennifer Maia.
ESPN’s Brett Okamoto broke the news that the world’s leading MMA promotion is planning both of these tittle fights for UFC 255, which will take place on November 21 at a to-be-determined location. UFC president Dana White confirmed both bouts are official. ESPN’s Ariel Helwani later added that Figueiredo has signed a new, six-fight contract with the UFC.
Figueiredo vs. Garbrandt has been heavily rumored in the last few weeks after Deveison Figueiredo destroyed Joseph Benavidez in their rematch on Fight Island to win the vacant UFC flyweight title. Not long after Figueiredo won the belt, Garbrandt said that he wanted to move down to flyweight and get an immediate title shot. His manager Ali Abdelaziz was able to get the deal done. Garbrandt, fresh off of a “KO of the Year” candidate against Raphael Assuncao at UFC 250, will now get a chance to fight for a second UFC title. (R/T BJPenn.com)
Flyweight Title
Both Deveison Figueiredo and Cody Garbrandt are coming off impressive stoppage wins leading up to this fight. With Figueiredo scoring an emphatic first round submission win over Joseph Benevidaz in an absolute shout out of a performance in July. While Cody Garbrandt beat the brakes off of Assuncao with a knockout of the year performance in June.
Women’s Flyweight Title
On the other side we have Valentina Shevchenko returning after 6 months, coming off her dominant performance against Kaitlyn Chookagian. Her opponent Jennifer Maia is coming off a great fight against Joanne Calderwood, where she flustered the Scott standing, before earning a submission victory early.
