Incumbent UFC flyweight champion, Deiveson ‘Deus Da Garra’ Figueiredo’s manager, Wallid Ismail, has shed light on a “nightmare” medical situation the night before this client’s UFC 256 title defence against challenger, Brandon ‘The Assassin Baby’ Moreno last weekend — which almost forced him from the clash.

Figueiredo, who had stunningly made the flyweight limit of 125-pounds for the second time in just twenty-one-days, was like Moreno, making a quickfire Octagon return following his first successful title defence against Alex Perez at UFC 255 in late November.

Going five gruelling rounds with Tijuana native, Moreno, Figueiredo managed to come away with his champion status intact via a close majority draw, after referee Jason Herzog deducted a point from the gold holder due to an accidental groin strike.
Engaging with the former LFA flyweight titleholder over the course of the twenty-five minute period, Figueiredo was more than active in the pocket, launching damaging hooks as Moreno somehow managed to weather the storm time and time again — even stunning the Brazilian in some back-and-forths.

After the Fight of the Year contender, Figueiredo detailed to UFC colour-commentator, Joe Rogan that he had spent the early hours of the morning in a medical facility, with what he suspected was a stomach infection.

Speaking with ESPN MMA reporter, Ariel Helwani, Figueiredo’s manager, Ismail shed light on the condition the Para native was enduring — comparing the whole situation to a “nightmare” as the former dealt with dehydration.

It was thirty-hours of (a) nightmare,” Ismail said. “When he (Deiveson Figueiredo) ate the soup, everything fell apart. He threw up a little bit and it started the nightmare. We get out from there, we go direct to the hospital.

Ismail then told how Figueiredo had woken up with a bloated stomach, and he was forced to contact UFC officials to notify them of his client’s condition — with fear the main event clash would be shelved.

His belly’s this size,” Ismail explained as he extended his arms outward. “Everybody was like, ‘He’s not going to fight.’ I called the UFC and said, ‘Hey man, the guy is really bad right now.’ We get to the hospital at 2:30 a.m., unbelievable. He said he could feel a lot of pain. I said, ‘The fight is gone.’

As Figueiredo tried to deal with the pain and discomfort, he spoke with Ismail and explained how he wanted to save the pay-per-view event rather than exiting the contest on short notice.

He looked at me, ‘Yes, I’m going to do it,’” Ismail explained. “Now he’s going to fight. The mindset of everybody is war, we’re going to war.

Oddsmakers are still siding with Deiveson Figueiredo in a potential rematch with Brandon Moreno.

Figueiredo successfully retained his title after fighting Moreno to a majority draw in their UFC 256 flyweight title headliner this past weekend.

Although many were picking “Deus da Guerra” to comfortably come out on top, he was pushed to his limit by Moreno in what was arguably the greatest fight in flyweight history.

The rematch is the natural next step to take and according to oddsmakers, Figueiredo should still come out on top.

According to BestFightOdds, Figueiredo has opened as a -275 favorite while Moreno is a +215 underdog. That means one would have to bet $275 to win $100 on Figueiredo while a $100 stake on Moreno would earn a profit of $215.

It should be noted that Figueiredo opened as -275 favorite for the first fight as well while Moreno was a +235 underdog. Figueiredo also closed as a -311 favorite.

The odds will likely be closer this time as the fight approaches but Figueiredo should still remain a comfortable favorite, especially considering he had a stomach infection the night before the fight as well as a point deducted during the fight for an illegal groin strike.

But as Moreno proved this past weekend, he won’t go out easily.

Who are you picking in the rematch?

Ciryl Gane Not Calling Names Out, Prefers To Fight Ngannou Only For Title

Gane

Despite earning the biggest win of his career, Ciryl Gane is remaining true to himself by not calling out any names.

Gane defeated former heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos via second-round TKO on the UFC 256 main card opener last night.

As a result, he has now all but assured himself of a top-10 ranking as he continues to rise up the ranks with many observers viewing him as a future champion.

However, he declined to call out anyone in his post-fight interview. As far as he’s concerned, any opponent can be put in front of him and he will do his job.

“(I’m calling out) Nobody,” Gane said after the fight (via MMA Junkie). “You understand who I am. Anyone, anywhere. I just want to do my job. That’s it.”

However, there is one potential opponent in particular that he would only like to face if there’s a title involved and that’s Francis Ngannou.

The pair were notably former teammates in the MMA Factory gym in Paris and while Gane is open to fighting him, he would prefer to do it only if it’s a championship bout.

“I think if the UFC does this, please do this for the belt. That’s it,” he added. “Because, you understand, we’re from the same gym, the same coach.”

With Ngannou set to challenge Stipe Miocic for the heavyweight title in a rematch sometime next year, it’s entirely possible that fight could come to fruition — especially if Gane keeps up his momentum.

What do you think of Gane’s ceiling in the heavyweight division?

Holland

Kevin Holland was serious when he called for a fight with Khamzat Chimaev next week.

Holland only competed last night at UFC 256 when he knocked out Jacare Souza in the first round of their middleweight contest.

As a result, he went an impressive 5-0 in 2020 but he wasn’t looking to stop there — in his post-fight interview, Holland called for a fight with Chimaev next week at UFC Vegas 17.

Chimaev was set to headline that card against Leon Edwards until it was recently postponed after Edwards tested positive for COVID-19. The bout is now expected to take place next month but Holland is looking to see if Chimaev really is a game opponent willing to fight anyone at anytime like he is.

As far as he’s concerned, Chimaev has a false reputation.

“Yeah, I’ll do it,” Holland told reporters when asked if he would actually fight Chimaev on December 19 (via Middle Easy). “He doesn’t have a reputation for fighting all the time — that’s just what the casuals think. He fought three times this year. Two times against bums and another time against Gerald Meerschaert. Meerschaert is not a bum but he was coming off a knockout.

“He hasn’t beat anybody in the UFC with a win but at the same time, he’s a good ticket for the UFC so let me stop talking about somebody that can help us make money, right?”

Holland would lay out the challenge again on social media soon after.

Chimaev is yet to respond as of now but it is highly unlikely he would be able to fight Holland anyway given how stacked the UFC Vegas 17 card is and the plan in motion for him to fight Edwards.

Perhaps it is one for the future though.

Brandon Moreno is ready to go again with Deiveson Figueiredo.

The pair fought to a majority decision draw in their UFC 256 flyweight title headliner last night in what was undoubtedly one of the greatest fights in the promotion’s history.

Moreno was a big underdog going into the bout against the red-hot Figueiredo but managed to take the champion to his limit as the judges ultimately couldn’t separate them after the latter was deducted a point for a kick to the groin.

“The Assassin Baby” has since released a statement on the fight (translated from Spanish).

“Everyone saw what happened yesterday friends, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose and other times you tie in essence, yesterday’s fight is why I dedicate myself to this, I hope you enjoyed it, I feel immense thanks to all of you for the unconditional support and I can’t wait for 2021.”

A rematch is the only natural course of action and White confirmed that would be next in 2021.

“I mean we gotta give these guys some time off but you absolutely, positively do that rematch,” White said at the post-fight press conference. “That’s another fun fight for us all to look forward to in 2021.”

If it manages to emulate even half of what we saw last night, we are in for something special.

What did you think of Moreno’s performance?
