Junior dos Santos still hopes to become UFC heavyweight champion again.
The Brazilian is currently enduring the first three-fight losing streak of his career following TKO defeats at the hands of Francis Ngannou, Curtis Blaydes and Jairzinho Rozenstruik.
Dos Santos is now set to take on promising heavyweight prospect Ciryl Gane on the main card of UFC 256 this weekend. There is plenty of hype with Gane and that’s something “JDS” can relate to as he sees similarities between the Frenchman and himself.
“He’s a different type of heavyweight,” Dos Santos told MMA Junkie. “He’s like me. He moves very well. He’s very light for his weight. He deals very well with his own size, so that’s why I’m saying it’s gonna be a very interesting fight, because this guy is dangerous.
“He already submitted some people showing some ground game, as well, so no doubt this fight will be very interesting for the fans, and I’m happy to be there fighting against someone that everybody is considering the next big name in the heavyweight division.”
While dos Santos is on a losing run, he is still the biggest test Gane has faced yet and a huge step up from his last fight. Whether he’ll be able to make the step up will be known this weekend but dos Santos will not be underestimating him.
In fact, he hopes a big win would show he’s far from done with the sport.
“I don’t underestimate my opponents,” Dos Santos added. “Especially right now, I can see a lot of potential in this guy to even become the champion one day. There’s a reason why everybody is talking about him, and that’s why it’s so important for me to go there and show a little bit more of myself as a fighter because once you start having negative results, people stop believing in you.
“I know I can avoid this type of feeling in myself, but I want people to believe me, and I want to give them a great victory on Saturday night so that they can believe in me again, and believe that I will become the champion at some point again.”
Do you think dos Santos will come out on top? And can he become heavyweight champion again?

We may be fast approaching UFC 256 this weekend, however, that hasn’t stopped co-main event feature, Tony ‘El Cucuy’ Ferguson from setting sights on former two-weight world champion and management stablemate, ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor. We may be fast approaching UFC 256 this weekend, however, that hasn’t stopped co-main event feature, Tony ‘El Cucuy’ Ferguson from setting sights on former two-weight world champion and management stablemate, ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor.
Ferguson, now represented by Ballengee Group, had spent some time under the same banner as fellow former lightweight gold holder, McGregor at Paradigm Sports Management, and claimed the company along with McGregor are in debt to the tune of $500,000 with him, after calling the Dubliner, would be UFC 254 opponent, Dustin Poirier, as well as the aforenoted, Khabib, “bitches“.
“I don’t f*cking know that dude’s (Dustin Poirier’s) a bitch,” Ferguson said when asked by Adam Catterall how close he was to featuring against the Lafayette native in October. “I’m not gonna, you know what I mean — he’s a bitch, Conor (McGregor’s) a bitch, Gaethje, and Khabib (Nurmagomedov’s a bitch. All three of them. I saw a false shuffle coming out, I saw they were gonna take the #2 and #4 [ranked lightweights] and put em’ over me and another one with (Michael) Chandler and then another one and do that and put me at #5.“
“F*ck that — (it’s) not happening, I’ve been with this company a very, very long time,” Ferguson said. “It’s happened once before with Conor — not happening (again), there’s no management to do bad business behind my back anymore with Paradigm Sports Management. You can’t be f*cking using that and manipulating the system along with the UFC to f*cking get that money.“
Ferguson continued to explain how McGregor owes him a substantial amount of money and claimed that the powers that be would prefer is he was the gold holder in the division.
“Those guys owe me like half a mill’ (million),” Ferguson said. “You gotta understand that, so Conor owes — he’s in debt with me and I’m coming after that ass, that’s why he’s laughing anytime I post and that’s why he’s tryna stay in that f*cking — you see Proper Twelve everywhere, they want him to be a champ. Dude, f*ck you and your seven-headed snake, I’ll cut your bitch-ass off.“

Tony Ferguson has laid out a warning to Charles Oliveira — don’t show up too overweight or their fight is off.
The pair of lightweight contenders meet in a pivotal three-round bout in the co-main event of UFC 256 this weekend. The fight was notably made on three weeks’ notice with Oliveira — currently on a seven-fight winning streak — deciding the rewards far outweighed the risks.
However, if he thinks he can use the excuse of the short notice to come in three to four pounds overweight, he’s mistaken. Ferguson claims he won’t fight Oliveira if that is the case.
“At the beginning of this camp, I made a conscious decision to trust in what got me here and the results are amazing,” Ferguson wrote on Instagram. “I have been competing in athletics for over 30 years and making weight the same amount of time. Weight is good and eating right.
“I am counting on the Brazilian Charles Oliveira and others to come in overweight like usual. So I’m calling it now. Case law. Short notice fight, Charles Oliveira will not cut weight all week and show up 3-4 pounds over weight and use the excuse of a short notice fight. If he shows up that much overweight, we are not competing. So crew, make sure you visit the kid’s page and encourage him to make weight if you want to see a fight.”
Oliveira has a history of missing weight as he has done so four times. However, all of them came when he was competing at featherweight.
Since moving up to lightweight, the Brazilian hasn’t really struggled to make the 156-pound limit for non-title bouts. Could the short notice affect things? We’ll find out during weigh-ins on Friday.
UFC 256 has lost its second bout in as many days. With the virus ravaging through the UFC Vegas 16 card this past weekend, many feared it would be the same for this upcoming weekend. Unfortunately, it looks there could be more changes.
The light heavyweight bout between Karl Roberson and Dalcha Lungiambula has now also been scrapped after Roberson tested positive for COVID-19. The good news is that it will be postponed to a week later for the UFC Vegas 17 card taking place December 19.
