Colby Covington held nothing back against his former friend and training partner in a recent interview.

The former interim UFC welterweight champion is coming off a decision win over Tyron Woodley. He has since been calling for a fight against his former teammate Jorge Masvidal. Covington recently sat down with Submission Radio to recap the year that was and his plans going forward. The topics ranged from the rumour that he will be coaching on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter opposite Masvidal to what his ideal 2021 would look like. “Chaos” was also asked for his prediction for the fight between Conor McGregor and another ex-training partner of his, Dustin Poirier. Covington took the opportunity to take a number of shots at the man he called his “fake best friend.”

“My best fake friend Dustin Sorryier,” Covington said. “All I can say guys, is you guys make sure you got the Kleenex ready at the press conference, because you know Dustin Sorryier is gonna break down on the mic, he’s gonna cry to the world, get everybody to feel sympathy and feel bad for him. He’s gonna get sparked again in the first round, because he’s completely washed up and has no chin anymore and no heart.”

“It’s not gonna be competitive,” Covington continued. “I think Conor’s just gonna spark him first round. Just get the Kleenex ready, cause Dustin’s gonna be crying up a storm at the press conference and getting everybody to feel bad for him. ‘Wah-wah, feel bad for me, I didn’t accomplish my dream’. Yeah, cause you’re a b—-. You didn’t work hard enough for it. What is up with society these days? People think that everyone should get a participation trophy. Dustin needs his safe space. Go in your safe space, Dustin.”

The history between Covington and Poirier goes back to their time at America Top Team. Both fighters started their careers out of Dan Lambert’s Florida-based gym, even becoming friends along the way. When Covington started becoming more outspoken, it reportedly created friction in the camp, particularly with Poirier, Masvidal, and Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Covington would end up leaving ATT in May 2020, first training at MMA Masters before eventually forming his own gym, Colby Covington Inc. The split was anything but amicable, however, as Covington took a number of shots at his ex-teammates while he left.

We’ll have to wait and see if the pairing between Covington and Masvidal ever becomes a reality. You can be sure Covington will continue to call for the matchup publicly until then, with more insults sure to follow. It will be interesting to see if Poirier takes the bait and issues a response, but in all likelihood, he’s probably too busy preparing for his fight against McGregor on January 23.

Returning to the Flash Forum in late September this time for four events, the promotion hosted UFC 253 and UFC 254 pay-per-view events — bookending a trio of Fight Night cards.

Set to host events on Saturday the 16. — Wednesday the 20. — and finally, Saturday the 23. — the promotion will spend just over a week on Yas Island this time around. Taking to his official Instagram to announce the return to Abu Dhabi, UFC president, Dana White confirmed the recent report from BJPENN.com reporter, Cole Shelton

Opening up proceedings will be UFC Fight Island 7, which is currently slated to feature a massive potential featherweight title-eliminator, with former 145-pound championship holder, Max ‘Blessed’ Holloway matching up with New England Cartel standout and striking talent, the #6 ranked, Calvin Kattar.

Rescheduled from a failed matchup for last weekend’s UFC Vegas 17 headliner in the promotion’s final event of the year, perennial welterweight contender, Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards draws uber-prospect, Khamzat ‘Borz’ Chimaev in the main event of UFC Fight Island 8 on January 20.

Edwards and Chimaev were originally booked to round out 2020 at the UFC Apex last weekend, until a particularly debilitating case of COVID-19 forced the former to withdraw from the pairing.

Four-years after their first featherweight escapades at UFC 178, lightweight strikers, Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier and ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor are set to meet again in January at UFC 257. With stakes higher than ever between the two — promotional leader, Dana White has predicted a “completely different” matchup this time round.

Former two-weight world champion, McGregor took on then perennial 145-pound contender Poirier at the September 2014 Las Vegas event. And in a breakout performance for the Dubliner, took home an opening-round knockout win over the American Top Team staple, becoming the first to finish Poirier with strikes in professional mixed martial arts.

Going on to achieve featherweight and eventual lightweight title success, McGregor hasn’t been nearly as active at 155-pounds as soon to be two-time foe, Poirier, who has flourished at his new lightweight home.

Establishing an incredible 10-2-(1) record at 155-pounds since then, as well as interim title last year, Poirier has bested a whopping four former world champions. Grabbing a second career win over former featherweight best, Max Holloway, Poirier added the Hawaiian to a winning run consisting of Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje, and Anthony Pettis.

UFC president, Dana White recently gave his thoughts on the upcoming re-run of Poirier vs. McGregor during an interview with BT Sports reporter, Caroline Pearce, and predicted a different clash than the pair’s first instalment.

It’s a completely different fight,” White said. “Obviously Conor (McGregor) is a much better fighter than he was when he faced him, and (Dustin) Poirier is a much better fighter too. I don’t know how that plays out now in the fight, but it’s definitely interesting. You can’t look at the first time and go, ‘Oh, this is exactly the way that’s gonna go again,’ Because it won’t. Conor looks damn good, and Poirier’s always in shape. I expect this to be a good fight.” (H/T MMA Junkie)

32-year-old counter striker, McGregor recently took his training camp to Albufeira in Portugal, where he’s joined by renowned kickboxing ace, Cian Cowley, as well as Straight Blast Gym staples, head coach, John Kavanagh, striking maestro, Owen Roddy, and wrestling technician, Sergey Pikulskiy.

With a single fight under their respective belts in 2020, Poirier headlined UFC Vegas 4 in June, taking home a unanimous decision barnburner over the gritty, Dan ‘The Hangman’ Hooker in his return to the winner’s enclosure.

Snapping an eighteen-month hiatus in January, McGregor took main event status at UFC 246, scoring a stunning forty-second knockout win over veteran one-time title challenger, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone in a welterweight curtain closer.

It didn’t take long for Amanda Ribas to get a new opponent.

The surging women’s strawweight contender was originally set to face Michelle Waterson at the upcoming UFC 257 pay-per-view event on January 23. However, it was recently reported that Waterson had to pull out with the reasons being undisclosed for now.

Instead, Ribas is now set to face fellow Brazilian Marina Rodriguez as both fighters have agreed to face each other on short notice. That’s according to sources close to MMA Fighting who confirmed the news after an initial report from Ag.Fight.

As per MMA Fighting, both sides have verbally agreed but contracts still have to be issued and signed.

Ribas remains undefeated in the UFC ever since she signed with the promotion in 2019. Her last outing saw her submit Paige VanZant with an armbar at UFC 251 in July. She also holds wins over Randa Markos, Mackenzie Dern and Emily Whitmire.

Rodriguez, meanwhile, will be looking to return to the win column after losing a split verdict to Carla Esparza in January — her first professional defeat. In total, she is 2-1-2 with the UFC, having notably drawn two fights against Markos and Cynthia Calvillo.

UFC 257 will be headlined by a lightweight bout between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier. No location has been officially confirmed but it is expected to take place on Abu Dhabi’s Fight Island.
