Despite winning a unanimous decision against Viviane Araujo at UFC 262, many believe Katlyn Chookagian’s win to be filled with controversy. Slated for the main card, there were lots of eyeballs on the fight between Araujo and Chookagian. While the weight class isn’t the deepest, Katlyn Chookagian is on a 2-fight win streak now, and […]

Jacare Souza lost his first bout of 2021 at UFC 262 against fellow Brazilian Andre Muniz. It was the first submission defeat of his mixed martial arts career, ending in an audible, first-round armbar. This is also the first time the former Strikeforce champion was defeated in consecutive fights that both ended by stoppage.
Souza was transported to a local Texas hospital promptly after the fight. According to MMA Fighting by virtue of Rickson Moraes, Souza’s long-tenured doctor, immediate X-rays showed a fractured right humerus, which will require surgery. He will stay in the United States for surgery instead of flying back to Brazil, Souza’s motherland.
Here is the submission that triggered the injury.
This marks Souza’s fourth consecutive loss, far and beyond the longest losing skid of his professional career. It marked just the second time throughout his UFC career that he was stopped in the first round.
As for his opponent, Muniz notched his 14th professional win via submission and is now 3-0 in the UFC since winning both of his Dana White Contender Series bouts in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
With a medical suspension looming and at 41 years of age, what is next for Jacare Souza?
There was some controversy in the Katlyn Chookagian vs. Viviane Araujo fight last night. Chookagian ended up winning a unanimous decision in her women’s flyweight contest with Araujo on the UFC 262 main card. However, it was revealed that Chookagian may have tapped during a mounted submission attempt from Araujo in the second round. Although […]
There was some controversy in the Katlyn Chookagian vs. Viviane Araujo fight last night.
Although it was brought up by the commentary team following the second round, they appeared to agree that it wasn’t a tap.
However, others disagree.
Naturally, Chookagian denied she tapped as she felt the submission attempt wasn’t in place for her to even need to tap in the first place.
“What submission?” Chookagian said in the post-fight press conference (via MMA Junkie). “You have to have your hands locked to have the submission. She had a headlock because she doesn’t know her jiu-jitsu. Yeah, no (there was no tap). You have to have a submission to get the tap. Definitely not.”
As for what’s next, Chookagian — who is now on a two-fight winning streak — is looking towards a new opponent in Alexa Grasso.
“I’ve been in this division since it opened,” Chookagian added. “I’ve beat No. 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, so obviously I’ll fight anyone. But the one girl that’s in the top 10 that I haven’t fought is Alexa Grasso.
“Everyone talks about how good her boxing is and when I watch that, I get a bit of a chip on my shoulder. I think I have the best boxing in the division, so that fight interests me, but I’ll fight anyone. I don’t care.”
Given that Chookagian lost to Valentina Shevchenko and Jessica Andrade, a win over Grasso and a few others would likely be required if she was to challenge for the title again.
Even Edson Barboza didn’t understand his knockout over Shane Burgos. Barboza collided with Burgos in a featherweight war that delivered as expected in the UFC 262 main card opener last night. Even Edson Barboza didn’t understand his knockout over Shane Burgos.
Barboza collided with Burgos in a featherweight war that delivered as expected in the UFC 262 main card opener last night. However, the action came to an end in the third round when Barboza connected with a right hand.
Burgos seemed to have eaten it only to have a delayed reaction as he stumbled backwards and collapsed with Barboza finishing the fight soon after.
It was definitely one of the most unusual and bizarre finishes to a fight and even more so for Barboza.
“I really don’t understand,” Barboza said at the post-fight news conference (via MMA Junkie). “I know I connected a good one because I felt it – but I felt like he shook a little bit and something happened and he went again and then went down.
“So I was like, ‘OK, let’s go finish him.’ I need to watch it because I really don’t know what happened. I connected with the right overhand, but I don’t remember.”
Regardless of the finish, it puts Barboza on a two-fight winning streak while he considers himself to be on a three-fight streak after his contentious split decision defeat to Dan Ige.
And given the rank of Burgos, the Brazilian will surely enter the top 10 now as he has his eye on the featherweight title.
“I think I’m on the way – I’m on the way to a title shot,” Barboza added. “I have 24 fights in the UFC. I feel better and better. I truly believe I won the last three fights at 145. Dan Ige is a top 10. Burgos is a top 10. I’m really on the way to get the title shot.”

Michael Chandler is keeping his head held high following UFC 262.
Chandler was just seconds away from becoming the new lightweight champion after hurting Charles Oliveira in the first round of their title fight in the UFC 262 headliner last night.
However, Oliveira survived and would go on to hurt Chandler himself in the second round as he earned the TKO win and became the new lightweight champion.
It wasn’t the fairytale Chandler wanted. However, he did soak up the moments leading up to the fight and certainly felt like he belonged in the UFC.
“I feel like I’m right where I’m supposed to be,” Chandler said at the post-fight press conference (via Middle Easy). “I do. I was just enjoying the moment, the fans back. … I just felt like I was in the right moment. A smile was on my face again. I feel like I’m fighting on borrowed time still. There were moments in my career where I’d never thought I’d end up here. I never thought the door would open and now it has. The first one was the highest of highs.
“This one, it’s not the lowest of lows, because Charles Oliveira is world class. Fighting for a UFC title is a world-class opportunity. But as my son knows, every young man falls, but every young man gets back up. The sun will rise tomorrow. When I fly home without the belt, we’ve got some explaining to do but we’re going to figure it out.”
Following the defeat, Chandler told Joe Rogan that he still planned on becoming a UFC champion within the next 12 months. The former Bellator champion still feels that way as he feels he can still beat anyone in the top five of the lightweight division.
“Here we are. I’ve been here before after losses,” Chandler added. “This sport moves quickly. I am still world class. Anybody next to get me into line for the title again, I believe I can beat them and then beat anybody in the top five so we’ll see what happens.”
It will be interesting to see what’s next for Chandler but one thing is for sure — he certainly proved he is one of the best 155ers in the world.
