Dustin Poirier’s next match-up may not necessarily be for the belt with middleweight Nate Diaz proposing a bout at 185.
Poirier who is now 28-6 came out victorious in his trilogy match-up with the ‘Notorious’ McGregor last Saturday at UFC 264 event. It had been touted that Poirier’s next fight would indeed be for the lightweight belt where he would be facing the newly crowned champion Charles Oliveira. This bout was expected to be scheduled for the end of 2021.
However, with that in mind, Nate Diaz took to Twitter in an attempt to call out the number one contender.
Diaz (20-13) is coming off a decision loss to welterweight Leon Edwards. Though the result didn’t go Diaz’s way, the Stockton-raised fighter was close to shocking the world when he was ‘Rocky’ Edwards wobbled in the last minute of the fight. Unfortunately, Diaz was unable to capitalize on Edwards immobility ultimately leading to the decision loss. The fight instead was a war that went the full distance, impressing fans and athletes alike.
Diaz has since tweeted a photo of him and Poirier’s face-off from the previously slated UFC 244 bout scheduled between the two, the photo followed the caption “185lbs. Pull-up.”
Poirier was quick to reply responding with a tweet that read “I’d touch you up at any weight”.
Dustin Poirier and Nate Diaz were originally set to fight one another at UFC 230 in 2018 however the bout fell through and never came to fruition due to external circumstances. Diaz instead went on to face Anthony Pettis, Masvidal, and Leon Edwards, winning just one out of the three bouts in a decision victory over former UFC competitor Anthony Pettis.
Poirier on the other hand went on to become the intern lightweight champion and compete for the lightweight title in which he fell short in his match-up against the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov. Poirier however is riding a three-fight win streak having won a total of 8 out of his last 9 fights.
It is hard to argue against the fact that Poirier’s next fight should indeed be for the lightweight title, however, would a match-up between ‘The Diamond’ and Nate Diaz be one you would like to see at 185?

Jake Paul has kept his word and has sent his infamous ‘Sleepy McGregor’ chain to Dustin Poirier following his win at UFC 264 last weekend in Las Vegas.
Paul has taken repeated shots at McGregor following his devastating loss to Poirier at UFC 264 due to a doctor’s stoppage stemming from his brutal left leg injury suffered towards the end of the opening round of the bout. During his recent pre-fight press conference with his upcoming boxing opponent, Tyron Woodley, Paul hinted at his intentions to send his ‘Sleepy McGregor’ chain to Poirier for earning the win.
Fans and critics of Paul were unsure as to whether or not he was seriously considering sending the chain to Poirier for his efforts; but in a recent tweet, Paul showed that he was completely serious about the gesture.
“Congrats for your much-earned victory!” Paul said in a letter to Poirier shown on his Twitter page. “I love what you are doing with your Good Fight Foundation! You deserve this chain more than me! Good always beats evil! Keep winning!”
“P.S. Tell Jolie I said Hi – She’s a badass!”
The social media world has had a fair share of laughs at McGregor’s expense, and this seems to be the latest addition to the conflict. McGregor suffered a fractured tibia in his fight against Poirier and underwent surgery at a Las Vegas hospital directly following the event.
Paul has long wanted a fight with McGregor in the boxing ring, but those plans are on hold as he gets ready to face Woodley in his next challenge next month. Paul went as far as saying that he would only offer McGregor $23.00 to fight him following his UFC 264 defeat.
The gift is also not a cheaply made one. It is valued at just over $100,000 and includes 500 grams of white gold with multiple diamonds included in the chain.

As Conor McGregor begins the preliminary stage of his recovery from a lower leg fracture he suffered at UFC 264, he’s speaking out and giving an insight as to what his physical state was like entering the octagon against Dustin Poirier.
The trilogy bout between McGregor and Poirier ended in an unusual fashion after one round of action, after McGregor’s left leg collapsed from underneath him after suffering a serious leg break. The fight was ruled a doctor’s stoppage win for Poirier, who will now be the first title defense for lightweight champion Charles Oliveira later this year.
McGregor hasn’t made any big media appearances since the events of UFC 264, but he recently posted a series of videos on his Instagram page describing his road to recovery and the troubles he ran into when preparing for the fight.
“Everyone keeps asking me at what point did the leg break?” McGregor said. “Ask [UFC president] Dana White, ask the UFC, ask Dr [Jeffrey] Davidson, the head doctor of the UFC. They knew… I had stress fractures on my leg going into that cage. There was debate about pulling out because I was sparring with no shin pads and I kicked the knee a few times, so I had multiple stress fractures in the shin bone above the ankle.”
“I even did a lot of training sessions when the ankle was sore, I still wouldn’t stop training, I used to train on my back and that’s how I developed those ground and pound shots from the back.”
McGregor underwent surgery for a fractured tibia at a Las Vegas hospital directly following the event, leaving the UFC octagon on a stretcher. This was the first time that McGregor had suffered a serious injury while competing.
McGregor is expected to have his impacted leg immobilized for the next 6-12 weeks, and it is widely anticipated that he won’t be able to return to competition until sometime in early 2022.

Last weekend, many UFC fans all around the world gathered together to watch one of the most anticipated cards of the year in UFC 264: Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor III. v
This was the second time McGregor has competed in the UFC in the same year since 2016.
Many ‘Notorious’ fans had hoped that McGregor’s new increased activity would ultimately mark his return to form, unfortunately, the fight took a very different turn last Saturday.
McGregor and Poirier were able to go toe-to-toe for the majority of the first round with both competitors walking away with highlights to share. While it can be argued going by the judge’s score card that Poirier had won the first round 10-8, it is hard to see exactly where the fight would have gone had it have went beyond the first round.
The fight had instead been stopped prematurely with a doctor’s stoppage due to McGregor breaking part of his lower leg in the last 10 seconds on the first round.
While McGregor was unable to finish the fight and put the American to sleep, he still remained a winner pocketing a massive paycheck of $23,011,000 which included a huge $18 million pay-per-view bonus! – ( H/T MMA SALARIES)
Before the fight it was anticipated that McGregor would receive a guaranteed $5,000,000 pay day however due to the success of the PPV sales, McGregor’s payslip instead rose to $23 million due to the event’s huge success.
UFC President Dana White shared in a post-fight press conference that the event actually sold over 1.8 million PPV worldwide which made it the second-highest selling card in the companies history.
The proof is in the pudding and it’s hard to deny the fact that McGregor, much like Nate Diaz, win, draw or lose, is still a huge draw for the promotion.
As for Poirier, it is reported that he earned only a fraction of what McGregor received, pocketing an approximate $5,121,000 which also included a $3,600,000 PPV bonus.
With the fight ending anticlimactically, it is known that many fans around the world as well as McGregor and Dana White are unhappy with the fashion in which the fight stopped.
In the UFC 264 post-fight conference, White insisted that he would like to see the fight again with a fourth clash to be announced in the future following McGregor’s surgery and successful recovery.
McGregor, has since remained positive, taking to Instagram following his leg surgery to announce that he is not only feeling ‘tremendous’ but also that “We’ve got six weeks on a crutch now and then we begin to build back.”
“Dustin, you can celebrate that illegitimate win all you want, but you’ve done nothing in there. The second round would have shown all.”
