With many in the mixed martial arts community split on the scoring of last weekend’s UFC 273 co-headliner between champion, Aljamain Sterling, and Petr Yan – former referee, turned podcast host and color commentator, John McCarthy has claimed that there is no feasible way in which Sterling won the opening round of their rematch – despite two of three judges handing the Uniondale native the first frame.

Rematching then-interim champion, Yan in the co-main event of the Jacksonville, Florida card, Sterling, a staple of Serra-Longo MMA, successfully unified the promotion’s bantamweight championships with a close, split decision (48-47, 47-48, 48-47) victory over Dudinka native, Yan.

Since the duo’s rematch, many have argued who should have landed a first round win on judge’s scorecards, with many pointing to Yan’s aggressive approach and ability to force Sterling to fight from the Octagon fence, however, the defending champion would land a series of body kicks and other varied offense from his lower limbs throughout the frame – likely landing him the round due to overall activity.

Suffering losses in the final two rounds, Sterling would, however, build up a concise lead in the second and third frames, amassing over three minutes of control time on Yan’s back during each frame – with many arguing round two, in particular, could have feasibly been scored a 10-8 in favor of Sterling.

John McCarthy argues Aljamain Sterling should not have won round one at UFC 273

Sharing his thoughts on the scoring of the title unification and in particular, the opening round – McCarthy, who has since tried his hand at color commentary for Bellator MMA – claimed there is no world where Sterling should win the opening frame.

“There’s is no way in the world you’re going to tell me that Aljo (Aljamain Sterling) won that first round, but I will say, I thought he fought a great fight,” John McCarthy said on his podcast, Weighing In, with co-host, UFC alum, Josh Thomson.”

“I thought it was a smart tactic by Aljamain to stay on the outside, to move continuously, but he didn’t land much,” John McCarthy insisted. “He landed a couple of kicks, not real hard, and he got hit with some heavy shots.”  (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

In the time since their rematch, Sterling had offered to fight Yan in a trilogy bout next year, however, is expected to land his next title defense against former two-time division titleholder, T.J. Dillashaw – whom he called out immediately post-fight.

Former two-weight UFC champion, Henry Cejudo, and streaking bantamweight contender, Sean O’Malley have both offered to serve as cornermen for interim division champion, Petr Yan at UFC 273 – as the Dudinka native faces potential issues assembling a corner for the April 9. event.

Slated to co-headline UFC 273 next month in a championship title unification bout against former-foe, Aljamain Sterling, reports emerged from TASS yesterday, detailing how members of Yan’s corner for the event had been denied VISAS to travel to the United States, but are set to reapply

With the situation regarding Yan’s corner for the event currently fluid, TASS reporter, Igor Lazorin suggested prominent mixed martial arts coach and former undisputed lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov would step in and corner his compatriot, Yan at the event.

Petr Yan landed the vacant bantamweight title back in July 2020 with a win over Jose Aldo

While Khabib has yet to offer his services, both the aforenoted, O’Malley and Cejudo have offered to make an impromptu corner for Yan at UFC 273 in his title unification rematch with Sterling.

“Petr (Yan), heard you need a corner, bro,” Sean O’Malley posted. “Let me know, I’ll be in (Las) Vegas – or wherever the f*ck your fight is. Let me know and I can corner you baby, one-two, one-two.”

“One corner spot is taken by @SugaSeanMMA (Sean O’Malley) (dog emoji),” Petr Yan tweeted.

Replying to a tweet from Petr Yan questioning what his plans were for April 9. – Cejudo claimed that he would corner Yan if he gave him a “booster seat”.

“Ger me a booster seat and I’ll work your corner… you kneed (sic) me. #andnew (Russian flag emoji),” Henry Cejudo tweeted in response to Petr Yan.

In his first matchup with Sterling back in March of last year, Yan suffered his first promotional loss in the form of a fourth round disqualification after he landed a knee to a grounded Sterling – resulting in a title loss.

Returning back in October of last year at UFC 267 on ‘Fight Island’, Yan clinched the interim bantamweight title with a unanimous decision victory against Cory Sandhagen.

UFC bantamweight titleholder Aljamain Sterling and former champ Petr Yan are back at it again on social media ahead of their rematch.

Sterling and Yan will finally meet in their highly-anticipated bantamweight title rematch at UFC 273. This comes nearly a year to the day of their first matchup when Sterling earned the belt via disqualification after Yan landed an illegal knee late in the fight.

In a recent tweet, Sterling roasted Yan for how he’s handled the loss in their first fight last year.

“In order to grow you need to accept your losses like a man,” Sterling said. “The first step in the process of healing is accepting your short-comings. In other words, bro, you lost!”

If recent history was any indicator, it didn’t take Yan long to respond to Sterling’s banter. He responded by attacking how Sterling handled his controversial win over him at UFC 259.

“At least I didn’t (lose) my dignity like you,” Yan replied. “I can envision yourself crying after our next fight again. I will beat the living shit out of you dog. Looking forward to your healing process.”

While Yan fired back in a big way, it was Sterling that would get the final word for now, making a play on words on Yan’s first name.

“The only tears I’ll be shedding are for your funeral, after I body bag you April 9th for the world to see,” Sterling responded. “You “Betr” show up!”

The rematch between Sterling and Yan was supposed to take place on multiple occasions in 2021, but the fight was moved due to various circumstances. Sterling has been battling injuries over the last few months and appears fully recovered and ready for his rematch with Yan.

After Sterling pulled out of their originally scheduled bout at UFC 267, Yan would fight and defeat Cory Sandhagen for the interim bantamweight title. Before his controversial loss to Sterling, Yan earned the then-vacant title over José Aldo at UFC 251.

We are just weeks away from the Sterling/Yan rematch and fans can expect plenty of banter back-and-forth between these two top 135-pounders.

What is your prediction for Aljamain Sterling vs. Petr Yan 2?

Aljamain Sterling Plans To ‘Body Bag’ Petr Yan Ahead Of UFC 273 Title Rematch

UFC bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling has claimed that the only tears he will shed against arch-enemy and interim champion, Petr Yan at UFC 273 next month – will be when he “body bags” the Dudinka native in their title unification re-run.

Sterling, who attempts to successfully unify the bantamweight titles on April 9. in the co-main event of UFC 273, also attempts to shut the proverbial door on a longstanding rivalry with the Russian technician.

Becoming the first champion in promotional history to lift an Octagon title via disqualification, Sterling was met with a fourth round illegal knee by Yan whilst he was deemed to b a grounded opponent during their initial matchup at UFC 259 last March.

The disqualification defeat to Aljamain Sterling came as Petr Yan’s first UFC loss since his transition to the Octagon

In the time since, Sterling has undergone invasive surgery to address a neck injury stemming from his amateur wrestling days – failing to obtain medical clearance to compete at UFC 267 in October as a result of a surgical procedure.

As a result, a ‘Fight Island’ title rematch with Yan was shelved, with the Dudinka native instead tackling and overcoming common-foe, Cory Sandhagen on short notice at the event to mint himself as the interim division champion in Sterling’s absence.

In the run-up to the pair’s title merger on April 9. – Sterling and Yan had traded multiple barbs on social media, only fueled by the former this evening, resulting in another back-and-forth between the rivals.

“In order to grow you need to accept your losses oike a man,” Aljamain Sterling tweeted, accompanied by a gif of Petr Yan. “The first step of the process of healing is accepting your short-comings. In other words, bro, you lost.”

Garnering a response from Yan, the Russian striking ace claimed that he would “beat the living sh*t” out of Sterling at UFC 273.

“At least I didn’t lose my dignity like you,” Petr Yan tweeted. “I can envision yourself crying after our next fight again. I will beat the living sh*t out of you dog. Looking forward to your healing process.”

Sterling then replied to Yan’s own response, claiming that he would only be shedding tears at Yan’s “funeral” at UFC 273, claiming he would leave the interim titleholder in a “body bag”.

“The only years I’ll be shedding are for your funeral, after I body bag you April 9th for the world to see,” Aljamain Sterling tweeted. “You ‘Betr’ show up!”

REPORT | Petr Yan’s Corner Team Denied Visas Ahead Of UFC 273

According to reports from Igor Lazonin from Tass Agency, Petr Yan’s entire corner has been denied a visa to enter the United States (as tweeted by Bruno Massami).

Per Lazonin, “visa request of all corners of Petr Yan was denied from US government.” The Russian fighter has a 3 year US visa and is allowed to enter the country for UFC 273. In light of the situation, Lazonin suggested the possibility of Khabib Nurmagomedov replacing Yan’s team to help his fellow countryman.

‘No Mercy’ is determined to settle the rivalry with Aljamain Sterling once and for all at UFC 273 on April 9 in Jacksonville, Florida. The interim champ will look to solidify his status as the bantamweight champion after their last bout resulted in a controversial win for ‘The Funk Master’ via disqualification.

Yan was cruising to a win against the champion at UFC 259 (up 29-28 on scorecards for two judges) when he ended up losing the fight by disqualification. In the fourth round, Yan landed an illegal knee to Sterling’s head when he was down which gave the latter the win.

Will Khabib step in to help corner Petr Yan?

Khabib Nurmagomedov stepping in to help corner Petr Yan is an interesting solution given his success as a coach since his retirement. Although Yan will be confident ahead of the bout, not having his cornermen for the unification bout is surely a blow for the interim titleholder.

Sterling hasn’t fought since their last bout as he underwent neck surgery after the win while Yan went on to claim the interim strap against Cory Sandhagen at UFC 267. He has only lost twice in a stellar record of 16-2, with his first loss avenged against Magomed Magomedov in 2017, a year after their first bout.

Entering the bout as the betting favorite, Russia’s first UFC 135 pound champion will look to avenge his second loss and unify the belts to reclaim his throne at bantamweight this April at UFC 273.

Will Petr Yan have Khabib in his corner for the bantamweight unification bout?

UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski is eying a matchup with Conor McGregor before he eventually calls it quits.

Volkanovski is set to make his next featherweight title defense against Chan Sung Jung (otherwise known as ‘The Korean Zombie’) in the upcoming UFC 273 headliner. He’s coming off of a largely dominant win over Brian Ortega at UFC 266.

Volkanovski was supposed to face Max Holloway next before Holloway pulled out with an injury. Jung is the next man up, but a fight with McGregor remains on the 145-pound champion’s mind.

In an exclusive interview with MMA News’ James Lynch, Volkanovski spoke about what the effect would be of a McGregor fight for his legacy.

“Obviously, Conor’s always gonna get his name out there,” Volkanovski said. “You’ve gotta remember, he was a featherweight, he was a champion of my division. So, I’ve taken out the featherweight champs, so to take out, the only one left, isn’t he? Yeah, it’s just Conor. There was me, Aldo, Max, and Conor. So it makes a lot of sense. Obviously, it would be a dream. And then I’ve taken out all the other champs in my division. So that would be incredible.

“You talk about the payday and the circus around it would be great, but at the same time, when you talk about legacy that’s definitely—and he’s undefeated at featherweight, too. So that’d mean something.”

McGregor hasn’t competed at featherweight since he won the unified title over José Aldo at UFC 194. He went on to fight at welterweight and lightweight, eventually earning the 155-pound title over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205.

Volkanovski fought at welterweight and lightweight to begin his professional career on the Australian regional scene, but a majority of his career has been at featherweight. Volkanovski went on to allude to the flexibility when it comes to the weight class that a McGregor fight would be competed at.

“I don’t think he’s making featherweight anytime soon [LAUGHS]. Obviously, with that fight, you’d do it at any weight. I’d do that at welterweight if I had to, whatever. We’ll see. I’ll just worry about Zombie, cause Zombie’s in front of me, and we’ll see. You might get some drunk tweets from Conor again and maybe we can ride off that, see what happens from there… 100% I would (fight McGregor at welterweight). I’d fight him at any weight.”

Volkanovski earned the featherweight title over Holloway at UFC 245, before winning a controversial split decision in an immediate rematch at UFC 251. He’s arguably one of the greatest featherweights in UFC history and continues to climb the ranks in the all-time great discussion.

McGregor is targeting a return to the Octagon later this year after a nasty leg break at UFC 264. It’s unclear what weight McGregor will fight at for his return, but a fight with Volkanovski may not be out of the cards as soon as this year.
