Justin Gaethje

Ahead of UFC 274 next weekend, former middleweight champion, turned promotional color-commentator, Michael Bisping has shared his thoughts on the likely path to victory for main event challenger, Justin Gaethje when he tackles lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira.

Headlining the Phoenix, Arizona card on May 7. – Gaethje, a former interim lightweight champion, looks to go one better in his second attempt at undisputed lightweight spoils – taking on undisputed best, Oliveira.

The Arizona native opened the main card of UFC 268 most recently at Madison Square Garden in a November showdown against common-foe, Michael Chandler – turning in a unanimous decision win in the consensus Fight of the Year to earn his slot as the #1 ranked contender.

Justin Gaethje has landed wins in five of his last six Octagon appearances

For Sao Paulo native, Oliveira, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu sensation headlined UFC 269 in December last, stopping common-opponent, another former interim titleholder, Dustin Poirier with an eventual third round standing rear-naked choke win.

Sharing his thoughts on how Gaethje could topple the surging Oliveira, snap his division-best 10-fight winning run, and clinch the lightweight title, the above mentioned, Bisping urged Gaethje to avoid any sort of offensive grappling scrambles.

“If he (Justin Gaethje) uses the wrestling, and takes down Charles Oliveira, that could be dangerous,” Michael Bisping said on his YouTube channel. “We know Charles is the best submission practitioner that the UFC has ever seen. But it doesn’t me he (Gaethje) can’t win a fight down there. Just look at the last time Charles Oliveira was beaten, that was against Paul Felder… ultimately, he gassed. Felder got on top and he landed five or six vicious, hard elbows, one after the other, and the referee called it off.”

“But the point remains, that a good wrestler, with a solid base, that isn’t playing that game, can win,” Michael Bisping said. “If you don’t engage in the Jiu-Jitsu game, if you don’t abide by the rules, if you don’t try and pass guard, if you don’t try and go for your own submissions, you don’t create as many openings.”

With that strategy in mind, Bisping, who admitted Gaethje would likely avoid any wrestling offense early in the fight, would also be wise to incorporate leg kicks into his approach.

“Another factor to consider as well: the leg kicks of Justin Gaethje,” Michael Bisping said. “He is one of the best history in the absolute game. A lot power, he throws them with frequency, he will stand in the pocket and throw low kicks all the time… he does it all the time. He has an advantage with the kicks, he has an advantage with the power, and he has an advantage in the wrestling. But Charles Oliveira has an advantage with the Jiu-Jitsu, maybe with the heart, with the experience, maybe the physiological experience coming in as the champion.”

Michael Chandler knows exactly what he has to do to top the “certified lunatic” Tony Ferguson at UFC 274.

Chandler will step into the Octagon against the former interim UFC lightweight champion Tony Ferguson at UFC 274 from the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona on May 7. Both men are known for putting on a show inside the Octagon, so fans are expecting fireworks when these two finally collide. Recently, Chandler joined DC & RC to preview his bout against “El Cucuy.”

The former Bellator champ said Ferguson is a tougher puzzle to solve than past opponents because you never know what the “certified lunatic” is going to do. However, he’s still going to go out there and look for a finish against the former interim champ.

“Tony Ferguson on the other hand I think is even more of a tougher puzzle to solve,” Chandler said. “You never know what Tony Ferguson is going to do. The man is a certified lunatic inside the cage and we love him because of it. So, there’s nobody — I think I train in the best gym in the world with the best coaches in the world.

“But none of my training partners can emulate Tony Ferguson. He is a certified one of one talent in mixed martial arts. I think I just got to out out there and put together a game plan: bite down on the mouthpiece, put pressure on him—like I always do—manage the distance, be fast, be strong, be athletic, and let my training take over.

“Go out there, listen to my coaching staff, and I believe I can go out there — I will be looking for a finish but I will not be overexerting myself to get the finish.”

Chandler is currently on a two-fight losing skid after a successful UFC debut in January of 2021 when he knocked out Dan Hooker. He was then finished by Charles Oliveira in his next bout for the vacant lightweight championship. The finish came in the second round after a promising opening round for Chandler, where he nearly finished the fight.

His last outing against Justin Gaethje was a tremendous contest, but Chandler came up short via unanimous decision. Now, he looks to get back on track with a win over Ferguson, who could also use a win right about now. Ferguson is on a three-fight losing streak after putting together a 12-fight win streak from 2013 to 2019.

His last three losses have come against the likes of Gaethje, Oliveira, and Beneil Dariush. Both men desperately need the win at this point in their careers, which should make for quite an eventful contest come fight night.

Who are you picking in Chandler vs. Ferguson? Let us know in the comments!

EXCLUSIVE | Randy Brown Wants People To “Keep The Same Energy Across The Board” In Colby Covington & Leon Edwards Comparison, Does Not Condone Jorge Masvidal’s Actions

Randy Brown, Jorge Masvidal, Colby Covington

UFC welterweight Randy Brown believes that Colby Covington crossed a line against Jorge Masvidal, who rose to fame after catching Leon Edwards with a couple of dog shots backstage.

Ahead of UFC 274 on May 7, Randy Brown spoke to LowKick MMA about his upcoming fight with Kalinn Williams and the potential of the winner breaking into the rankings. After soundly beating Alex Oliveira via a rear-naked choke to mark his submission win in the first round, “Rude Boy” defeated Jared Gooden by unanimous decision last year.

Brown will take on “Khaos” as he hopes to “get it done” and extend his win streak to three. On being probed about a potential rematch with Vicente Luque or Belal Muhammad, both of whom he has faced in his career, Brown suggested that he needs a few more wins and is confident that he’ll see them again in the ring at some point in the future.

Talking about the reported physical altercation that took place between Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal, Brown explained how there is a line in promoting and clarified a tweet on the incident he had posted earlier.

“My tweet got misconstrued a little bit but that’s naturally Twitter, that’s what Twitter does,” Brown said. “For me, I just say ‘hey, I think we should kinda keep the same energy across the board no matter what the situation is if you like somebody or not like somebody.’”

Randy Brown compared Colby Covington with Leon Edwards

The star of Jorge Masvidal began to rise following an incident that happened post-fight backstage in 2019. As Masvidal was being interviewed after his knockout win over Darren Till, Edwards exchanged some words with ‘Gamebred’ that led him to walk up to Edwards and sucker punch him.

Masvidal’s stock rose sharply upwards as he was labeled to be the cool guy who handed Edwards the infamous three-piece and a soda, a euphemism for the sucker punches he landed on the Jamaican-English fighter.

Randy Brown made a very good point of keeping the same energy across the board whether you like someone or not. If it was cool when it happened to Edwards, then it should be cool that it happened to Colby Covington.

“Because when Leon (Edwards) got sucker-punched, right? It was three-piece and a soda, right?. It was cool and t-shirts were being sold and it was all funny, right?

“And then when it happens to Colby, a person that is known for crossing certain lines and known for saying you know stuff. His fans come to his aid and they’re like, ‘oh, you know, this guy, charges should be pressed against him’.”

Brown made it clear that he does not condone such behavior by Masvidal, not when it happened to Edwards, and not when it happened to Covington either.

“Listen, I don’t condone any of it, I never condoned it back when it was three-piece and a soda, right? I never condoned it then so why am I going to condone it now?”

“I’m just keeping the same energy,” Brown added. “I think it was a sucker move when Masvidal did it (to Edwards), and it’s a sucker move now.”

He also commented on the fact that social media may have given people a false sense of reality as he reinforced the idea that words do have consequences.

“But at the end of the day, you can’t go around saying what you want to say and feel like there’s no consequences. You can’t talk about street shit and cross certain lines and then when it comes back to you in the street, you’re just like ‘there’s no consequences’. That’s not the real world, that’s not how things work. We have this warped sense of reality now with the internet and stuff, that’s just not how things work.”

Do you agree with Randy Brown’s take on the matter? Will he beat ‘Khaos’ Williams this May 7?

Charles Oliveira: Justin Gaethje Is “Coming Up With A Lot Of BS”

UFC Lightweight Champion Charles Oliveira believes a lot of Justin Gaethje’s pre-fight words ahead of their UFC 274 main event are “bullsh*t.” Having upset the odds twice in 2021, first to win the vacant title by finishing Michael Chandler at UFC 262 and then by defending it at UFC 269 by submitting the heavily-favored Dustin…

UFC Lightweight Champion Charles Oliveira believes a lot of Justin Gaethje’s pre-fight words ahead of their UFC 274 main event are “bullsh*t.”

Having upset the odds twice in 2021, first to win the vacant title by finishing Michael Chandler at UFC 262 and then by defending it at UFC 269 by submitting the heavily-favored Dustin Poirier, Oliveira has firmly proved those who doubt his championship credentials wrong.

Oliveira will look to do that yet again by defeating one of the individuals who has previously been hesitant to credit his mettle in the cage. In the May 7 headliner, Gaethje, a former interim titleholder, will look to secure his place on the throne in his second time trying.

While a respectful build-up was to be expected with these two, some of Gaethje’s past comments were bound to stir up some back and forth. Now less than two weeks out from the fight, things have started to pick up.

Oliveira Highlights Gaethje’s ‘Mind Games’

During a recent interview with Brazilian media outlet Olhar da Luta, Oliveira suggested that Gaethje is attempting to spread narratives and utilize mind games to gain some form of advantage ahead of UFC 274.

Given the questions surrounding his toughness and ability to fight through adversity, as well as the extent to which his chances were downplayed ahead of his Poirier defense, Oliveira has certainly learned to filter out the negative noise, something he plans on doing with regards to “The Highlight.”

“Justin Gaethje is coming up with a lot of bullsh*t,” claimed Oliveira. “I think that’s what he’s trying to do, to win the mind game. But that makes no difference to me. I learned that we have two ears to listen, but we also have to let it out.

“If he thinks he can beat me in a standing fight, he can try to knock me out,” Oliveira continued. “If he thinks he’s a better wrestler than me, he can take me down too.” (h/t MMA Clips Brazil)

UFC 274 is set to see the UFC’s leading finisher go toe-to-toe with one of the most entertaining and tough brawlers the Octagon has to offer. While it’s difficult to imagine any words will get to Oliveira prior to May 7, it remains to be seen if Gaethje’s fists will be more effective in gaining an edge over the Brazilian on the night.

Who do you think will leave UFC 274 with the lightweight gold, Charles Oliveira or Justin Gaethje?

As UFC 274 approaches, tensions are building between the two men who make up the main event, lightweight champion Charles Oliveria and No.1 contender Justin Gaethje.

Whilst the two competitors have been particularly vocal about their dislike of each other so far, Justin Gaethje has previously called into question the mental resolve of Charles Oliveira. In a video posted to the UFC’s YouTube channel, Gaethje discussed how ‘Do Bronx’ stacks up to the rest of the division, stating that:

“He is not the best in this weight class. I can promise you that. He still has quit, and it’s not even very deep down inside of him.”

Charles Oliveira addresses Gaethje’s comments

Speaking in a recent interview with Olhar da Luta, Oliveira discussed Gaethje’s perception of him, giving the indication that ‘The Highlights’ comments were nothing more than mental warfare.

“Justin Gaethje is coming up with a lot of bullsh*t,” said Oliveira. “I think that’s what he’s trying to do, to win the mind game. But that makes no difference to me. I learned that we have two ears to listen but we also have to let it out… If he thinks he can beat me in a standing fight, he can try to knock me out. If he thinks he’s a better wrestler than me, he can take me down too.” (Transcribed via MMA Clips Brazil).
