Making his Octagon return this weekend at UFC 279 in a 180lbs catchweight clash with fellow exciting striker, Kevin Holland, streaking welterweight contender, Daniel Rodriguez has welcomed the opportunity to knock his fellow Californian from his pedestal amid his recent string of wins.

Out of action since August of last year, Rodriguez, who entered the Octagon for the seventh time at that UFC Vegas 35 event, managed to secure his most high-profile victory in the organization to date with an impressive unanimous decision win against former interim title challenger, Kevin Lee.

In the midst of a two-fight winning run at welterweight since his return to the division, Riverside striker, Holland defeated promotional alum, Alex Oliveira at UFC 272 back in March with a second round knockout at his first outing in the welterweight division, before then submitting common-foe, Tim Means with a second round D’Arce choke win.

Daniel Rodriguez welcomes the chance to shut Kevin Holland’s mouth at UFC 279

Welcoming the opportunity to fight Holland in this weekend’s all-Californian matchup, Rodriguez claimed he was itching to “shut up” the fan-favorite contender.

“Man, I see it being a fun-ass fight,” Daniel Rodriguez said of his UFC 279 return during a recent interview with Inside Fighting. “He’s (Kevin Holland) definitely going to come out swinging and put up a fight. He has been calling me out for a long time, the whole time I’ve been injured he;s been trying to call me out. I was scheduled to fight him, he got injured so it was kind of one of those things, it was a fight that was going to happen sooner or later.”

“I honestly see myself coming our with the ‘W’,” Daniel Rodriguez explained. “… Kevin Holland – I finally get to shut that motherf*cker up.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Boasting an impressive 6-1 record during his Octagon tenure, beyond a sole loss to former Cage Warriors champion, Nicolas Dalby, Rodriguez has defeated Tim Means, Gabriel Green, Dwight Grant, Mike Perry, and Preston Parsons.

Footage has emerged detailing a tense verbal altercation and back-and-forth between upcoming UFC 279 headliner, Khamzat Chimaev, and former middleweight title challenger, Paulo Costa – with the duo separated and corralled at the UFC Performance Institute.

Chimaev, the current #3 ranked welterweight contender, attempts to land his first title siege under the promotion’s banner this weekend in ‘Sin City’ – featuring in a main event clash against veteran Stockton native, Nate Diaz

As for Costa, the Belo Horizonte striker snapped his two-fight losing run against both Israel Adesanya and Marvin Vettori last month in the co-main event of UFC 278 in Salt Lake City, defeating former middleweight champion, Luke Rockhold.

With tension at its peak for Chimaev ahead of his pivotal matchup against Diaz this weekend at the T-Mobile Arena, footage has emerged of the duo sharing some words in a heated verbal battle at the UFC Performance Institute, with Costa offering to fight Chimaev in the future.

“Did you say you want to f*ck me up,” Khamzat Chimaev asked Paulo Costa who was grappling with Jake Shields. Responding to Chimaev, Costa says, “I want to fight you, do you want to fight me?”

Replying to Costa, Chimaev, now irate and being held back by members of his team including UFC light heavyweight staple, Ilir Latifi, says, “I want to f*ck you up now p*ssy boy. Brazilian p*ssy.”

Mocking Costa for his 2020 knockout loss to middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya, Chimaev claimed that the City Kickboxing staple “f*cked” Costa – poking fun at the Nigerian-Kiwi’s post-fight display following his win over Costa.

“What happened with Israel (Adesanya)?” Khamzat Chimaev asked. “He f*cked your ass, yeah? I’m here now, you said you were going to f*ck me up. You’re a p*ssy now.”

Paulo Costa offers to fight Khamzat Chimaev after UFC 279

Responding to the entire altercation with Chimaev, Costa called the Chechen-born contender denied Chimaev’s so-called status as a “real gangster” – backing Diaz to win this weekend.

“I think Nate Diaz will beat him, Nate is a real gangster,” Paulo Costa said on Instagram. “Chimaev calls himself a real gangster, but he’s just a gourmet Chechen. He’s not a real gangster. F*ck that guy, Nate Diaz will f*ck him up. I’m with Nate all day. F*ck that gourmet Chechen. If Chimaev beats Nate Diaz, we can do this (fight) for my last one.” (Transcribed by Mirror)

Linked on multiple occasions to share the Octagon with current UFC welterweight champion, Leon Edwards in the past, streaking division contender, Khamzat Chimaev has claimed he will “squeeze” the head of the Birmingham native’s recent opponent, Kamaru Usman’s shoulders – as he fails to rule out a fight in the future.

Chimaev, who boasts an undefeated 11-0 professional record, is slated to headline for the first time in his promotional tenure this weekend at UFC 279 – tackling the veteran, Nate Diaz, who is slated to exit the organization as he completes his contract.

The #3 ranked contender most recently featured on the main card of UFC 273 back in April, defeating one-time title challenger, Gilbert Burns in a close, unanimous decision win.

As for Usman, the Auchi native stumped at his attempt to secure his sixth successful defense of the welterweight crown back in August against two-time foe, Leon Edwards, suffering a brutal fifth round high kick KO loss after winning three of the opening four rounds.

Khamzat Chimaev still remains willing to fight Kamaru Usman in the future

Remaining open to the possibility of sharing the Octagon with Usman despite the Auchi veteran dropping the title last month, Khamzat Chimaev remains supremely confident of landing a convincing submission win.

“If it will happen, it will be a big fight,” Khamzat Chimaev said of a fight with Kamaru Usman during an interview with ESPN MMA reporter, Brett Okamoto. “Everyone want to see that fight, because he’s (Kamaru Usman) almost the same kind of fighter like me. Good wrestling, good boxing, but his grappling is terrible. Leon Edwards took him down, take his back. If I take his back, I squeeze off his head. Everyone wants to see that fight.”

While Chimaev eyes a future fight with Usman despite the Nigerian’s recent falter, the ONX Labs trainee is expected to land himself an immediate title trilogy rubber match with Edwards next year – in a trip to the U.K. and enemy territory for the former division kingpin.

Chimaev, the current #3 ranked welterweight contender, featured on the main card of UFC 273 back in April of this year most recently – defeating one-time title chaser, Gilbert Burns with a close, unanimous decision victory.

As for Diaz, the Stockton veteran has been sidelined since June of last year at UFC 263, suffering a unanimous decision loss to recently minted division champion, Leon Edwards. This weekend’s outing will also mark the completion of Diaz’s contractual obligations with the promotion as he is expected to leave the UFC off the back of the T-Mobile Arena event.

Khamzat Chimaev admits he’s “motivated” by potential UFC 279 payout

Featuring in a recent sitdown interview with ESPN MMA reporter, Brett Okamoto ahead of his first organizational headliner, Khamzat Chimaev insisted he was “motivated” by the prospect of earning the biggest payout of his UFC tenure to date.

“Yeah, I never made that much money in all my career – or my life,” Khamzat Chimaev replied when asked if UFC 279 will come as his biggest payday. “It feels kinda amazing. (I’m) more happy, like more motivated – yeah, it feels good.”

Attempting to earn a first title challenge under the promotion’s banner with an expected victory over Diaz this Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada – Chimaev has echoed claims that he will arrange the veteran’s “funeral” for the UFC come the culmination of their welterweight headliner.

During his Octagon tenure dating back to July 2020, Chimaev has defeated John Philips, Rhys McKee, Gerald Meerschaert, and event co-main event feature, Li Jingliang, to go with his April judging win against Burns.
