Khamzat Chimaev

Fast-rising welterweight star Khamzat Chimaev is rounding the highest profile fight of his relatively short UFC career. On September 10th, the Chechnyan-born fighter will get his first main event against Stockton’s own Nate Diaz.

In a recent video clip by Youcef Hollywood that was uploaded to the UFC on BT Sport Twitter, Chimaev can be seen at a gym with none other than No. 7 ranked UFC middleweight, Sean Strickland. In the clip, Strickland can be seen and heard warning another teammate about sparring with ‘Borz’ before turning his attention Swedish star offering both words of encouragement and a bit of a warning.

“Be nice. Khamzat, understand, you’re better than most of… You’re better than everybody” said Strickland in the clip. “Don’t hurt people.”

Debuting for the promotion in 2020, Khamzat Chimaev went on an absolute tear, scoring three impressive finishes in less than two months. His momentum was briefly halted due to an especially tough bout with COVID-19, but ‘Borz’ made a full recovery and returned at UFC 267. It was like the massive welterweight had never left. In his return contest, he demolished Li Jingliang with a first-round rear-naked choke.

Ready for a big step up in competition, Chimaev stepped into the Octagon against former world title challenger Gilbert Burns. It was by far the biggest test of his career. ‘Borz’ passed the test, securing a unanimous decision victory, but not without having to overcome some adversity in their UFC 273 clash.

Nate Diaz Could Earn a Welterweight Championship Opportunity With a Win Over Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 279

Nate Diaz‘s contract disputes and his overall desire to be done with the UFC have been widely publicized, mostly by The Ultimate Fighter alumni himself. After months of lobbying to schedule the last fight of his contract, the Stockton scrapper finally gets his wish, but many feel that the UFC is simply leading Diaz to the slaughter by pairing him with Khamzat Chimaev.

Of course, anything is possible in mixed martial arts. Our most recent example of that was at UFC 278 when Leon Edwards delivered the head kick heard around the world to become the new welterweight world champion. While a rematch with former champion Kamaru Usman is a near-certainty, ‘Rocky’ has gone on record saying that if Nate Diaz wins this fight, he would gladly give the fan-favorite fighter a crack at his newly won UFC gold.

While UFC President Dana White previously stated that a win for Khamzat Chimaev would put him in pole position for a welterweight title opportunity, the boss recognizes they may have to look at giving Diaz his moment should he score what many would believe would be a major upset.

“I mean, obviously, if Nate beat Khamzat Chimaev, the No. 3 guy in the world, you’d have to look at Nate, too. Everybody’s talking … like that it’s impossible for Nate Diaz to win this fight. Nothing is impossible in fighting. Everything is possible,” said White in an interview with ‘The Underground.’

“Nate Diaz wanted this fight. It was either this fight or Francis Ngannou. This fight makes a lot more sense than Francis does. But, you know, for everybody to think that a veteran who’s as durable as Nate Diaz can’t win this fight is insane, so anything is possible. … You get out of the first two rounds and the fight gets interesting.”

UFC 279

Ahead of next month’s UFC 279 pay-per-view event on September 10. – the promotion have released a spine-tingling video to promote the event’s much-discussed welterweight main event between the undefeated, Khamzat Chimaev, and the veteran, Nate Diaz.

Taking main event honors in the promotion’s flagship event for the month of September, 11-0 sport berserker, Chimaev makes his headlining debut for the organization as he draws Stockton fan-favorite, Diaz.

AllStars MMA staple, Chimaev will attempt to improve on his undefeated record and likely earn his first shot at Octagon gold, following a prior high-profile victory over one-time title challenger, Gilbert Burns at UFC 273 back in April.

While stakes remain somewhat high in this pay-per-view headliner, one-time lightweight title chaser, Diaz is expected to leave the UFC following the event, with the Californian completing his contractual obligations at the conclusion of the headliner.

UFC 279 will likely come as Nate Diaz’s final Octagon walk as his contract with the promotion ends

Diaz has made no qualms regarding his strained relationship with the promotion over the course of this year ahead of UFC 279, as he attempted tirelessly to book the final fight on his current contract with the organization.

Criticized for this certain matchmaking practice which sees the veteran, unranked, Diaz challenge the surging, #3 ranked, Chimaev – who has enjoyed a roughshod run at 170lbs, the promotion released a ‘Seek & Destory’ promotional video ahead of UFC 279 ahead of last weekend’s UFC 278 main card.

Throughout the minute and a half video, footage details Chimaev’s run through competition since his July 2020 promotional bow, with UFC color commentator, Joe Rogan describing the Chechen-born force as “uncommon amongst uncommon men”.

Diaz, who has footage of his UFC 196 earth-shattering submission win over former duel-weight champion, Conor McGregor sprinkled throughout the video, claims that Chimaev can only “kill” him by actually killing him, during a short soundbite.

As well as receiving criticizm for a perceived light booking of Diaz’s expected exit card, the promotion recently confirmed the addition of a welterweight pairing between former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson, who tackles the #14 ranked division contender, Li Jingliang in his first welterweight walk since 2011.

Leon Edwards

Newly-minted UFC welterweight champion, Leon Edwards has claimed that he would be “100 percent” willing to rematch Nate Diaz in a championship outing in the future – should the exiting Stockton veteran defeat Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 279 next month.

Edwards, who headlined UFC 278 on Saturday in Salt Lake City, Utah – turned in a spectacular rallying fifth round win over two-time opponent, champion, Kamaru Usman, launching with a hail mary left high kick to knockout the Auchi native and snap Usman’s run as division pacesetter since 2019.

Immediately linked with a potential title trilogy rubber match against Usman next, Leon Edwards is expected to reignite his rivalry with the now-former champion next year, with UFC president, Dana White floating a potential London return for the new titleholder, as part of what would come as a monstrous Wembley stadium debut for the organization.

Leon Edwards landed a clear-cut decision win over Nate Diaz in June of last year

The Birmingham native, who earned his title challenge against Usman back in June of last year with a unanimous decision win over the aforenoted, Diaz – insisted that he would “100 percent” grant the one-time lightweight title challenger a shot at welterweight gold should he defeat the unbeaten, Chimaev at UFC 279.

“Imagine the scenes – the scenes!” Leon Edwards told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “I really hope he does (beat Khamzat Chimaev), imagine the scenes. I would 100 percent give him (Nate Diaz) a shot as well. That would be – the scenes would be crazy. I would 100 percent give Nate the shot, man. ‘Cause Nate’s a G – I said it after the fight, he is who he is. He’s one of the guy’s – the game’s never changed him. If that does happen, then Nate’s definitely getting the shot.”

As well as a potential rematch with Diaz, Edwards, who welcomes an immediate championship trilogy with Usman, however, also floated the possibility of ending his long-standing rivalry with welterweight contender and past challenger, Jorge Masvidal.
