Former interim UFC lightweight champion, Justin Gaethje has cemented his status within the lightweight division’s top-3 — securing a close, majority decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-28) victory over the surging, Rafael Fiziev in the co-main event of UFC 286 in London, England.
Returning the winner’s enclosure following an unsuccessful bid to land undisputed lightweight gold against Charles Oliveira in April of last year, Gaethje managed to score a hotly-contested co-headlining win over Fiziev — with the help of an impressive striking display in the third and final round.
Struggling massively with the speed and precision of Tiger Muay Thai staple, Fiziev in the first and second round, Gaethje managed to bloody the #6 ranked lightweight contender in the third round, finding home with both a series of jabs and brutal, stinging uppercut shots. With the victory, Gaethje returns to winning-ways for the first time since earning a title shot against Michael Chandler in 2021.

Nelson, who entered tonight’s matchup with Barberena off the back of an impressive unanimous decision victory over Takashi Sato in his Octagon comeback back in March of last year at The O2 Arena to boot.

Eventually stepping over, Gunnar Nelson, a staple of Straight Blast Gym under the guidance of John Kavanagh, landed a late armbar triumph — forcing a tap from Barberena with just less than 10 seconds remaining in the opening round.

Anderson Silva receives UFC Hall of Fame induction
“If you have a Mount Rushmore of UFC fighters… @SpiderAnderson (Anderson Silva) is probably on it!” UFC tweeted on this official Twitter account.
Debuting in the UFC back in June 2006 with a first round knockout win over Chris Leben, Silva would then clinch the undisputed middleweight crown in his next Octagon walk – taking out Rich Franklin with a another first round KO in October of that year.

Silva also holds the longest winning spree in UFC history – notching a stunning 16 consecutive victories under the Dana White-led banner.

Undefeated UFC flyweight challenger, Muhammad Mokaev was forced to grit through a late, third round kneebar attempt from Dana White’s Contender Series alum, Jafel Fialho — submitting the Brazilian himself in the dying embers of their UFC 286 preliminary card matchup with a rear-naked choke effort.
Mokaev, who had landed a trio of victories in the Octagon since his transition to the promotion back in March of last year, debuting with a submission win over Cody Durden — before besting Charles Johnson, and then Malcolm Gordon in further decision and submission wins, respectively.
Wrestling his way toward a likely decision win over Fialho, Mokaev’s undefeated record was in great jeopardy midway through the final round, with the Brazilian threatening and almost finding is way through with a taut kneebar.
Fully extended in the submission attempt, Mokaev managed to survive and grit through — despite suffering some visible damage, before wrapping up his own rear-naked choke win with less than half a minute remaining in the preliminary card pairing.

Ahead of his incoming UFC 286 headliner this weekend in a championship trilogy rubber match against Leon Edwards, former welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman admits there is not an awful lot left for him to do as titleholder off the back of the London pay-per-view.
Usman, the current #1 ranked welterweight contender, headlines UFC 286 this weekend at The O2 Arena in the English capital, attempting to reclaim the welterweight title and bragging rights in his trilogy rubber match with Edwards.
Suffering his first defeat under the tenure of the UFC last August, Usman had enjoyed an impressive showing against the Birmingham native, however, was finished in the last minute of the fifth round – courtesy of a stunning high kick knockout loss.
Clinching the undisputed welterweight crown, Edwards avenged a prior December 2015 unanimous decision loss to Usman in Orlando, Florida.
And this weekend, Edwards returns to home soil for the first time since 2019, headlining in London in an immediate championship trilogy bout with Usman.
Kamaru Usman questions what is left for him to do after UFC 286
As far as Usman is concerned, the ONX Labs trainee pointed to spectacular wins over rivals Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington during his title reign, however, questioned what would be left for him to achieve with a title win over Edwards in the capital.
“Honestly, you know, there’s not many more things left for me to do,” Kamaru Usman said during the UFC 286 pre-fight press conference. “I would love this one [against Leon Edwards] as well, everyone is special so I would love this one as well.”
“The Colby (Covington) one was special – the (Jorge) Masvidal one was special,” Kamaru Usman explained. “This would be special just as well.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)
Taking main event honors in the organization’s return to London this weekend, undisputed welterweight champion, Leon Edwards fights on homesoil for the first time in four years – attempting to clinch the trilogy and retain his title against former champion, Kamaru Usman, atop a UFC 286 pay-per-view card.
Edwards, the current undisputed welterweight champion, managed to land himself the division throne back in August of last year in Salt Lake City, Utah – rallying with a fifth round high kick KO to defeat Usman and topple the Nigerian from his perch atop the pound-for-pound rankings.
The loss came as Usman’s first during his gold laden Octagon tenure, having previously beaten Edwards back in 2015 – and racking up title defenses against Jorge Masvidal, Gilbert Burns, and rival, Colby Covington.
Attempting to take out Usman for the second time in as many fights this Saturday evening in London, England – Edwards tops a massive pay-per-view card in the capital, hosted at The O2 Arena.
And despite emerging from the Vivint Arena as the unlikely champion in the tailend of last summer, Edwards, who was conceivably losing each round ahead of his Hail Mary fifth round finish over Usman, is hotly closing as a betting underdog to leave home soil with his championship in tow. On outright winner, Edwards is place as short as a +110 underdog to defeat Usman over at BetWay.
Despite dropping his undisputed crown in stunning fashion last August, a combination of a dominant showing prior to his KO loss, paired with his prior 2015 unanimous decision win over Edwards in Orlando, Florida mate Usman a betting favorite to reclaim his crown.
Edging past Colby Covington prior to his loss to Edwards last year, Usman had stopped Jorge Masvidal with a brutal knockout, after stopping former teammate, Gilbert Burns. In the early stages of his title reign, Usman would retain his title in other wins over both Masvidal and Covington – having clinched the crown initially from Tyron Woodley.
And according to BetWay, the Auchi native – under the tutelage of Trevor Wittman at ONX Labs, appears to be landing decent money on a drawn out win over Edwards on Saturday in London, with the ex-champion currently placed at -115 to take a decision win over the champion and force the judges into action at The O2 Arena.
Heralded for his spectacular fifth round high kick KO win over Usman back in August, Edwards has been placed as quite the underdog to repeat that feat and finish Usman with strikes, with BetWay offering the Birmingham native at +500 to stop Usman via KO, TKO, or win via disqualification.
En route to his championship victory, Edwards, a staple of Team Renagade BJJ & MMA – toppled the likes of Nate Diaz, Vicente Luque, Bryan Barberena, Donald Cerrone, Gunnar Nelson, and former undisputed lightweight champion, Rafael dos Anjos.
An interesting prop wager ahead of Saturday night sees BetWay offer odds on the bout coming to a close in the opening minute – rather than the final 60 seconds this time around, with Usman still a favorite as short as -400 to dispatch Edwards within the opening minute in London Town.
