Israel Adesanya shuts down trilogy fight with Alex Pereira idea now it's settled UFC 287

Newly minted undisputed middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya has shut down the idea of sharing the Octagon with arch-rival, Alex Pereira for a third straight time following last night’s devastating knockout win at UFC 287, claiming their spat is now “settled”.

Avening a November knockout loss to Sao Paulo striker, Pereira last night in the curtain closer of UFC 287, City Kickboxing staple, Adesanya managed to fight off second round adversity against the Brazilian – cannoning back with a huge counter knockout win at the Octagon fence.

Israel Adesanya claims his rivalry with Alex Pereira is now “settled”

Reclaiming the undisputed middleweight title, Adesanya, who managed to turn the tide and secure his first triumph over Pereira over their four fight series across professional combat sports, claimed his rivalry was “settled” with the latter.

“I don’t keep score, I settle it, and now it’s settled,” Israel Adesanya said of his rivalry with Alex Pereira during his post-fight press conference at UFC 287. “I gave him [Alex Pereira] a fast track to the belt. I could’ve said, ‘Naw, who’s he fought?’ He only fought one top five [contender].’ But no. He did well. He fought some top guys. He beat (Sean) Strickland, and I was like, ‘Well, fine. There’s no one else.’”

As for an immediate trilogy bout under the UFC banner, Adesanya scoffed at the idea – urging Pereira to make a pursuit a division higher at 205lbs.

“I was looking for that challenge,” Israel Adesanya explained. “He beat me in kickboxing and I got the immediate rematch because of what I’ve done in the game. … I did the hard years and I earned my f*cking rematch. Now he has to do the hard yards and earn it, but i don’t think he’s going to. Go cause problems at 205 [pounds] – he’s a motherf*cker to deal with, I’ll tell you that.”

Receiving a slew of callouts following his triumphant title return, Adesanya was subject to open challenges from former champions, Jan Blachowicz, and Robert Whittaker – while undefeated welterweight berserker, Khamzat Chimaev appears confident he fights the Nigerian-Kiwi next.

As for Pereira, the now-former undisputed middleweight champion has been tipped to potentially make a move to the light heavyweight division following his stunning second round KO defeat by UFC president, Dana White.

Israel Adesanya mocks Alex Pereira's son with celebration after UFC 287 KO win

Newly minted undisputed middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya took the time during his post-fight celebration to call back a prior rivalry with the son of opponent, Alex Pereira – mocking and teasing Alessandro Pereira after stopping his father with a brutal second round knockout in the main event of UFC 287.

Adesanya, now a two-time undisputed middleweight champion under the banner of the UFC, managed to lodge his first victory over Brazilian finisher, Pereira in combat sports at the fourth time of trying in Miami, Florida last night.

Rallying himself from a difficult opening round and some definite adversity in the second frame, Adesanya claimed he “roped-a-doped” Pereira at the Octagon fence following a heavy combination of strikes from the Brazilian, before countering and landing a devastating knockout victory of his own.

Following Pereira to the Octagon canvas, Nigerian-Kiwi striker, pinned the Sao Paulo native to the canvas with an iconic archery celebration, before taking a lap of honor, and then slumping to the Octagon floor himself, in apparent mockery of Pereira.

However, speaking with assembled media following UFC 287, Adesanya called back Pereira’s so, Alessandro Pereira’s mockery of his 2017 knockout loss to his father in Brazil – where the latter lay down beside an unconscious Adesanya.

“I’m petty, bro,” Israel Adesanya said. “I remember the first time [Alex Pereira] knocked me out in Brazil, and his son came into the ring and then started to lie dead next to me, and I’m like, ‘you f*cking little asshole. I’ll whoop your ass if your dad don’t do it for you.’”

“But then, yeah, I looked for his kid [in the crowd], and I pointed at him, and I saw him, and I was like, hey, hey, hey, [motions like he fell] just to remind him,” Israel Adesanya explained.

Israel Adesanya uninterested in immediate trilogy with Alex Pereira

Receiving a slew of callouts from the likes of former opponents, Robert Whittaker, and Jan Blachowicz following his knockout win – as well as unbeaten welterweight phenom, Khamzat Chimaev, Adesanya appeared less than interested in granting Pereira an immediate title rematch and trilogy rubber match in mixed martial arts – urging him to work his way through a pile of contenders first.

Undisputed UFC welterweight champion, Leon Edwards has poked fun at arch-rival, Jorge Masvidal following the Miami veteran’s unanimous decision loss to Gilbert Burns at UFC 287 last night – claiming the Floridian once again “fumbled” a fight against him.

Co-headlining UFC 287 last night in his hometown, two-time welterweight title challenger, Masvidal suffered his fourth consecutive loss in the form of a unanimous decision defeat to the perennial division contender, Burns.

And in the immediate aftermath of the co-headlining defeat, Masvidal, who was linked with a potential walk away from the sport, and confirmed during an interview with Joe Rogan that he would be hanging up his gloves from mixed martial arts – calling time on a storied professional career.

Leon Edwards pokes fun at Jorge Masvidal’s decision loss at UFC 287

Reacting to Masvidal’s decision loss to Brazilian contender, Burns and subsequent retirement from the sport, Birmingham native, Edwards mocked the American Top Team staple’s missed opportunity to share the Octagon with him.

“F*cking bum Jorge (Masvidal) fumbled the bag once again,” Leon Edwards tweeted following UFC 287. “None of them really deserve it. Who should I fight next? #KingLeon”

Most recently himself back in March in the main event of UFC 286, Team Renagade MMA & BJJ staple, Edwards successfully defended his undisputed welterweight title with a close, majority decision trilogy victory over common-foe, Kamaru Usman.

And the defending champion is widely expected to return to an earmarked UFC 291 card on July 22. in London, England – taking on former interim titleholder, Colby Covington in his second attempted title knockback.

Edwards and Masvidal were first officially scheduled to share the Octagon in a bid to bury their longstanding hatchet back in December 2021 at UFC 269, the latter withdrew from the pay-per-view showdown citing an undisclosed injury.

Alex Pereira expected to move to light heavyweight after UFC 287 loss Israel Adesanya

Alex Pereira may be making a move to light heavyweight following his UFC 287 loss to Israel Adesanya.

Poatan’ returned to the Octagon five months removed from his shocking fifth-round knockout of ‘The Last Stylebender’ to capture the middleweight championship. Things did not go as well for Pereira this time around as Adesanya finally scored a statement victory over his Brazilian boogeyman, delivering a brutal second-round knockout to reclaim the 185-pound crown.

While Adesanya eyes a potential clash with undefeated Chechen monster Khamzat Chimaev, Alex Pereira might be moving on to another division altogether. Speaking at the UFC 287 post-fight press conference, Dana White suggested that ‘Poatan’ will be moving to the 205-pound division rather than seeking a trilogy fight with Adesanya.

“Honestly, I think Pereira moves to 205 after this fight,” White told reporters. “He’s a monster. I know that he still had like two pounds to cut, and it was an hour left of the weigh-ins. So yeah, I’m not saying he’s moving to 205, but I’m assuming he is; you can ask him. It wouldn’t surprise me.”

When asked again about Pereira’s potential move, White said, “I would bet anything he moves to 205 after this fight.”

Fresh Matchups Await Alex Pereira in the Light Heavyweight Division

Making the middleweight limit is an especially grueling process for Alex Pereira, as evidenced by an image released showing the kickboxer cutting weight three weeks before stepping into the Octagon on Saturday night. Before his UFC 281 title fight with Adesanya, Pereira revealed that he cut nearly 50 lbs in order to make weight. A move to light heavyweight will shed 20 lbs off his cut, making it still difficult, but much more manageable.

Given his status as a former UFC titleholder, Alex Pereira will likely find himself immediately contending at the top of the light heavyweight division. Potential matchups awaiting ‘Poatan’ include former champions Jan Blachowicz and Jiri Prochazka, No. 2 ranked contender Magomed Ankalaev, Aleksandar Raki?, and ‘Lionheart’ Anthony Smith. Of course, the ultimate goal is a UFC title opportunity against reigning champion Jamahal Hill.

How do you think Alex Pereira will fare in the light heavyweight division?

Khamzat Chimaev warning Israel Adesanya after UFC 287 see you soon

Khamzat Chimaev is already eyeing a UFC middleweight title showdown with newly crowned 185-pound king Israel Adesanya.

On Saturday night, ‘The Last Stylebender’ scored a jaw-dropping second-round knockout of longtime rival Alex Pereira to regain the middleweight title. Mere moments after Adesanya landed a right hand “from the gods,” Chimaev took to Twitter, congratulating the new champion on his victory before issuing a warning.

Khamzat Chimaev Sets His Sights on Israel Adesanya Following UFC 287

7 years removed from his first loss against Alex Pereira under the GLORY Kickboxing banner, Israel Adesanya finally got a W against his towering Brazilian boogeyman. Unfortunately, he may not have much time to enjoy the victory as fighters are already lining up for their shot to dethrone the two-time titleholder. That includes the undefeated Chechen monster who has his eyes on UFC gold.

Khamzat Chimaev stormed into the UFC in 2020, rattling off three wins in less than two months before an especially bad bout with COVID-19 put him on the shelf for more than a year. Returning in 2021, Chimaev returned with a vengeance, earning a first-round submission of Li Jingliang before facing the toughest test of his career at UFC 273. ‘Borz’ went into battle with perennial contender Gilbert Burns, earning a hard-fought unanimous decision victory, the first time he would go to the scorecards under the UFC banner.

Chimaev has since added another win to his resume, mauling fan-favorite Kevin Holland on his way to a first-round submission.

In December, Khamzat Chimaev was heavily rumored to step inside the Octagon with then-middleweight champion Alex Pereira, but with the Brazilian fresh off of his UFC 281 clash with Israel Adesanya, the two parties were unable to come to terms. Now with ‘The Last Stylebender’ back in control of the division, ‘Borz’ has a new target to set his sights on.

In truly spectacular fashion, Israel Adesanya chalks his first combat sports victory over arch-rival, Alex Pereira — reclaiming the undisputed middleweight title with an earth-shattering second round KO win over the Brazilian in the main event of UFC 287 in Miami, Florida.

Laying claim to a victory over Pereira for the first time in their four fight series, Israel Adesanya had dropped his undisputed middleweight crown to the Sao Paulo native back in November of last year, with the latter rallying to land a fifth round TKO victory at the Octagon fence.

However, in the ‘Sunshine State’ — City Kickboxing staple, Adesanya manages to land his first victory over Pereira in either mixed martial arts or kickboxing, surviving a wild second round exchange to flatten Pereira in blistering fashion.

Appearing on the routes once more, Adesanya saw his left leg chewed up with a series of low kicks from Pereira, with the Brazilian backing the former onto the Octagon fence, in pursuit of a finish.

However, surviving a barrage — in quite brutal viewing, Adesanya rocked Pereira with a counter right hook, before repeating the same sequence, dropping the now-former champion with a highlight-reel second round KO — regaining his seat atop the undisputed middleweight crown.
