Gilbert Burns, Jorge Masvidal, UFC 287

UFC welterweight Gilbert Burns wants his upcoming Jorge Masivdal fight turned into a five-rounder. The two 170-pounders are scheduled to square off in April at UFC 287.

The bout is set for five rounds but Burns has been vocal about turning the fight into a five-round scrap for the ‘BMF” title. Masvidal shot down the idea in a recent appearance on The MMA Hour.

During an interview with MMA Fighting, Burns revealed his talks with the UFC about tweaking the UFC 287 co-main event.

For sure, it’s a disappointment,” Burns said. “I’m still waiting on the UFC. We’re talking with the UFC — if they say, ‘We don’t think so,’ I’m going to say please, come on. I don’t ask for much. I just want five rounds. You guys did five rounds for Leon Edwards and Nate [Diaz], you guys did five rounds on other occasions. Why not? I’m pushing, but we’re still waiting.”

It’s very hard when one guy says no – it’s very hard for the UFC to say yes. So we’ll see. I would love to have that [‘BMF’] title in place and five rounds for sure because I just think I’m going to destroy this guy.” (h/t MMA Fighting)

Gilbert Burns Has Championship Aspirations

‘Durinho’ wants to hold UFC gold for the first time and become the UFC welterweight champion. First, he wants to make Masvidal “suffer”. Despite his requests for a five-round ‘BMF’ fight, Burns is not holding his breath.

The main goal is destroying these guys and become champion,” Burns said. “So if it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen.”

Three rounds, I’m going to make that guy suffer so much in three rounds that it should be enough, but five rounds just guarantees a finish. If the fight is five rounds, I’ll finish, but if he don’t want it, it’s all good.” (h/t MMA Fighting)

Burns last fought two weeks ago in a first-round submission win over Neil Magny at UFC 283.

Raul Rosas Jr. UFC 278 UFC

Ahead of his sophomore Octagon walk, 18-year-old flyweight prospect, Raul Rosas Jr. has announced plans to not just become a single or duel-weight champion under the banner of the UFC, but plans to make history entirely – by becoming the first three-division champion in the promotion’s antiquity.

Rosas Jr., a product of Dana White’s Contender Series, made his long-awaited Octagon bow back in December of last year at UFC 282, submitting Jay Perrin with a dominant first round submission courtesy of a taut rear-naked choke.

Improving to 7-0 as a result of his first round submission win, Rosas Jr. has since been booked to make his second Octagon appearance on April 8. at UFC 287 against Christian Rodriguez – beneath a middleweight title rematch between Alex Pereira, and Israel Adesanya, and a welterweight grudge match between Jorge Masvidal, and Gilbert Burns.

Raul Rosas Jr. eyes three separate UFC title victories

Sharing his thoughts on a potential title coronation in the future amid his recent UFC debut, Mexico City native, Rosas Jr. claimed he would become a champion, then a duel-weight titleholder, before making history and becoming a three-division champion.

“I’m ready to go out there and show my skillset like I’ve always done,” Raul Rosas Jr. said during an in-cage interview at Fury FC 73. “I don’t care who I face. I’m here to show that there are levels. Tune in April 8th (UFC 287). I’m going to show my skillset and show that i deserve to fight for a title.”

“Just believe in yourself, no matter who doubts you,” Raul Rosas Jr. explained. “Right now, me saying I’m going to be champion, a lot people think I’m crazy that I’m going to become the youngest UFC champion, but I believe in myself and mark my words: I will be champion in one year or less. I’m just getting started, like this is nothing to me. I ain’t celebrating nothing until I have them three belts around my waist: 135, 145, 155, let’s go.” (Transcribed by MMA Mania)

Following the announcement of his impending middleweight championship rematch with fierce-rival, Alex Pereira at UFC 287, former division kingpin, Israel Adesanya maintains that he will settle the score with the Brazilian – whom now holds three career wins over him.

Adesanya, a former undisputed middleweight champion and current #1 ranked division challenger, is set to headline UFC 287 on April 8. against Brazilian striker, Pereira, rematching for the undisputed 185lbs championship.

First meeting in professional mixed martial arts back in November of last year – reigniting their prior kickboxing rivalry, Israel Adesanya suffered a fifth round standing TKO loss to Pereira at UFC 281 in Madison Square Garden, marking the end of his title reign over the division.

Israel Adesanya previews his April re-run with Alex Pereira at UFC 287

Slated to headline UFC 287 in April against Pereira, Adesanya shared a promotional video on his official Instagram account ahead of the bout with the former duel-weight GLORY Kickboxing kingpin, stylized in the theme of horror movie franchise, Saw

In this game, we don’t keep score, we settle them,” Israel Adesanya posted on Instagram accompanied by a promotional video.

Suffering his first professional loss at the middleweight limit in his professional mixed martial arts career, Adesanya had landed a prior five successful defenses during his time atop the middleweight pile.

Unifying the division championships with a 2019 knockout win over Robert Whittaker, City Kickboxing star, Adesanya defeated Yoel Romero, Paulo Costa, Marvin Vettori, Whittaker again, and most recently, Jared Cannonier during his time as undisputed champion.

Attempting to land a fourth combat sports career win over Nigerian-Kiwi slickster, Adesanya, Pereira would land just his fifth Octagon victory with a win in April – having previously bested Andreas Michailidis, Bruno Silva, and Strickland before his above-mentioned November championship triumph.

Along with a middleweight title rematch at UFC 287, the pay-per-view event is also set to host a high-stakes welterweight pairing between former division title challengers, Gilbert Burns, and the returning, Jorge Masvidal over the course of three rounds.

We finally have the return of Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal on tap nearly 11 months out from his defeat to Colby Covington at UFC 272, as he’s expected to face fellow former title challenger Gilbert Burns at UFC 287.

UFC 287 is to go down on April 8, 2023, live from a to-be-determined venue in Miami, Florida.

Jorge Masvidal has dealt with a layoff as of late, most likely due to his arrest for attacking Covington in a public area about a week after their fight. That said, he wasn’t exactly doing the best prior to his absence, losing his last three-straight to former champion Kamaru Usman in back-to-back title fights, and then Covington.

Before that however, Masvidal was on perhaps the hottest three-fight win streak we’d ever seen out of any fighter.

It began with him returning from another long layoff, this one 16 months, when he faced Darren Till at UFC FN 147. Masvidal was a massive underdog on a two-fight losing skid going into this fight, but the result would shock everyone as he brutally KO’d Till in round two, in front of Till’s home crowd no less.

Masvidal followed this up by becoming the first man to ever defeat Ben Askren, a former multi-time Bellator & ONE welterweight champion, before stopping Nate Diaz in his third and final bout of 2019.

Till was 17-1-1 going into their fight, coming off his title shot to then champion Tyron Woodley; Askren was 19-0, and he became just the second man to ever finish Nate Diaz via some form of knockout, though of course it was a doctor stoppage.

That brings us to his three-fight skid, and to where he really needs a win at UFC 287 to stay relevant in his division.

Gilbert Burns on the other hand has gone 2-2 over his last four following victory over former champion Tyron Woodley himself. That streak begins with a defeat to Kamaru Usman in his title shot, before he’d defeat former title challenger in Stephen Thompson via unanimous decision.

Burns would then lose a unanimous decision to Khamzat Chimaev, a fight that could have went either way, becoming the first man to ever take the Chechen the distance, and he most recently submitted the winningest fighter in UFC welterweight history Neil Magny with an arm-triangle choke in round one this past weekend at UFC 283.

This is going to be a good one! A fight many of us have wanted for some time now.

Does Jorge Masvidal get back to his winning ways, or does Gilbert Burns keep his top five spot in the rankings?
