Ian Machado Garry claims Israel Adesanya lost more than Sean Strickland actually won at UFC 293

Sharing his thoughts on former two-time middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya’s title loss to Sean Strickland at UFC 293 over the weekend, unbeaten welterweight, Ian Machado Garry has claimed the City Kickboxing staple lost the bout more than the newly-minted champion actually won the clash.

Headlining the promotion’s return to Sydney, Australia, Adesanya suffered a rather comprehensive unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46) loss to outspoken challenger, Strickland, dropping his undisputed middleweight championship as a result.

The loss came as City Kickboxing mainstay, Adesanya’s second in his three most recent Octagon walks, having first lost the middleweight crown to common-opponent and arch-rival, Brazilian knockout artist, Alex Pereira back in November of last year at UFC 281 in Madison Square Garden.

And targeting a title re-run with Strickland – as soon as UFC 296 in December, if not the early goings of next year by his head coach, Eugene Bareman, Adesanya has been defended as losing the title more than Strickland actually won it from him, according to Dubin striker, Machado Garry.

“I feel like Izzy (Israel Adesanya) lost the fight more than Sean Strickland won the fight,” Ian Machado Garry told MMA Fighting. “I feel like there was a certain point in that fight where Izzy was afraid to lose more than he wanted to win. That is essentially meant that his efficiency, his output, his shot selection wasn’t as elite as it normally is and it gave Sean Strickland the opportunity for his awkwardness to have success, his constant pressure to have success.”

“I feel like if you run that fight back, there’s no way Sean Strickland gets his hand raised again,” Ian Machado Garry explained. “That’s my opinion, but at the end of the day, Sean Strickland got his hand raised and I can never shoot a man for reaching his dream.”

As far as his own future is concerned, undefeated welterweight finisher, Machado Garry has set sights on former interim welterweight champion, Colby Covington – claiming he would walk into Miami, and “slap the mouth off” the former gold holder in the future

Anderson Silva rips Israel Adesanya GOAT talk after UFC 293 I'm in charge of this

Amid claims that Israel Adesanya had surpassed former undisputed middleweight champion, Anderson Silva as the divisional greatest ever ahead of his eventual UFC 293 title loss to Sean Strickland, the Brazilian has issued a reminder to the former champion, insisting that he is “in charge” of the GOAT conversation still.

Silva, a former undisputed middleweight champion under the banner of the UFC – who recently received his Hall of Fame induction earlier this summer, called time on his professional mixed martial arts career back in October 2020, following an eventual TKO loss to common-foe, Uriah Hall.

Since switching his focus to professional boxing in the form of a trio of clashes against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Tito Ortiz, and Jake Paul – Silva shared the Octagon with Adesanya in an impromptu 2019 headliner in Australia – suffering a unanimous decision loss.

Anderson Silva appears to take shots at Israel Adesanya after UFC 293

And posting a highlight-reel of his on his official Instagram account, Brazilian veteran, Silva first appeared to take shots at Adesanya off the back of his judging loss to Strickland last weekend, before swiftly deleting and altering the caption.

“I’m the one in charge of this sh*t here, and you’re not going to open your mouth again to compare yourself to me in this sh*t,” Anderson Silva wrote on Instagram. “Do you understand? I’m the one in charge of this sh*t here.” (Transcribed by Sherdog)

Drawing comparisons to Brazilian fan-favorite, Silva amid their similar striking prowess and dominance atop the division during their respective middleweight title runs, Adesanya was branded as the greatest middleweight of all time ahead of UFC 293 by a host of personalities, however, dropped his championship belt in shocking fashion to massive underdog, Strickland in a legacy-altering defeat

Less than five days removed from his shocking undisputed championship victory at UFC 293 over the course of last weekend, newly-crowned champion, Sean Strickland has already broken a side panel on the official title belt – strapping the strap together again with some makeshift duct tape.

Strickland, who headlined UFC 293 last Saturday night in Sydney, Australia, turned in one of the most stunning championship upset victories in the history of the organization, landing a totally one-sided unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46) victory over two-time champion and defending gold holder, Israel Adesanya.

Sean Strickland breaks UFC championship belt

And strapped with undisputed middleweight gold for the first time in his Octagon tenure, former welterweight contender, Sean Strickland has been forced to already break out the duct tape in aid of the title belt, breaking a side panel on the official championship

Sharing an immense amount of thoughts on his championship upset victory against Adesanya ‘Down Under’ over the course of the weekend, Xtreme Couture staple, Strickland praised his father for alleged child abuse in his youth, which he claims led him to the championship spoils.

Furthermore, Strickland, who claimed it felt like fighting an “amateur” in his clash with Adesanya on Saturday night in Sydney, has been pegged to fight the former two-time champion in an immediate rematch.

And according to Adesanya’s head coach, City Kickboxing leader, Eugene Bareman, a showdown as soon as December or early 2024 may already be on the cards.

“Realistically, end of the year, start of next year,” Bareman explained. “I said one week because that was me eluding to, I think the game plan is still there. It still exists. I think that there are some mental things there that we can quickly adjust in a week and then get back in there, and we could see a completely different fight. Whether Sean’s able to impose those mental blocks that he put on Israel, I don’t know if he’ll be able to do that again.”

Israel Adesanya targets December rematch with Sean Strickland you're going to see a real good fight UFC 293

Despite less than three days removed from his title loss to Sean Strickland at UFC 293 on Saturday night, Israel Adesanya is already planning a rematch with the former, as soon as December, with head coach, Eugene Bareman expecting a much different fight this time around.

Adesanya, who headlined UFC 293 in Sydney, Australia, suffered a one-sided unanimous decision loss to Strickland in the pair’s championship clash atop the main card, dropping four out of five rounds on each of the three judge’s scorecards.

Now a former two-time undisputed middleweight champion, City Kickboxing staple, Israel Adesanya remained coy on his lacklustre performance and loss to Strickland following the event ‘Down Under’, however, UFC leader, Dana White insists that despite watching a “slow motion” performance by the former, he wants to see an immediate rematch between Adesanya and Strickland.

Echoing that sentiment of an immediate return to fight Strickland, Adesanya’s head trainer, Bareman claimed a December or early 2024 turnaround for his student is the most likely option for him next.

“Israel (Adesanya) has to inflict more pain and damage on this man (Sean Strickland),” Bareman told Submission Radio. “And what that’s going to mean is we have to find a way to do it and minimize how much harm we kind of put in front of them. … You’re going to see a real good fight, an intriguing rematch against a great opponent and a great time.”

“Realistically, end of the year, start of next year,” Bareman explained. “I said one week because that was me eluding to, I think the game plan is still there. It still exists. Israel Adesanya appeared to be more upset about some disparaging comments made about his dog than losing the middleweight world championship at UFC 293.

Saturday night saw ‘The Last Stylebender’ lose the 185-pound crown for the second time in under a year, suffering a lopsided unanimous decision defeat against seven-to-one underdog Sean Strickland. Following the contest, Adesanya shared some words with Strickland inside the Octagon. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to pick up on the back-and-forth dialogue during the live broadcast, but Strickland later revealed that the conversation was about Adesanya’s dog who had been a topic of conversation leading up to their main event clash.

“It was strange, it was strange, man,” Strickland told reporters during the UFC 293 post-fight press conference. “I think he was mad that I made fun of his dog, I’m not even joking. I’m like ‘What the f*ck is going on here, man. Are we having this conversation?’ Like truly, he was mad, yeah. Izzy I’m sorry I made fun of your dog. I’m sure he’s a great fella.”

During their first face-to-face at the UFC 293 pre-fight press event, Sean Strickland routinely made light of Adesany’s seemingly sketchy relationship with his dog, referencing a viral video where the ‘Stylebender’ gleefully touched his dog inappropriately.

As it turns out, the dog in the video has since passed away, making it a rather sore subject for the former two-time titleholder.

Sean Strickland Discussed the Time He Killed a Dog (Not Adesanya’s)

Of course, not every Sean Strickland story is complete without putting his own crazy spin on it. After the subject was brought up, ‘Tarzan’ revealed that he himself once killed a dog, but noted that it was purely in self-defense.

“I killed a dog once,” Strickland continued. “Crazy story. I have a weird past man, weird past. I’m going to clarify that statement because my Instagram is going to get flooded. I was hiking once, I had a bunch of dogs off-leash with my little rascals running around. And there were these stray dogs, like vicious f*cking pitbulls and they came running at my dog. I had a gun, boom, plugged one. So to clarify, it was self-defense. But anyways, yeah, it was a f*cking dog, Izzy. Calm the f*ck down, dude. I’m sure your dog’s a great fella. This is how it starts, guys. No more dog questions in here, guys, it’s getting f*cking awkward” (h/t MMA Mania).

With Adesanya still seething over Strickland’s disparaging remarks about the former champ’s four-legged friend, is it possible that ‘The Last Stylebender’ could use that as motivation to book himself an immediate rematch? Following the contest, UFC President Dana White was certainly open to the idea, suggesting that a rematch is the logical next step, but it will ultimately be up to Adesanya to decide what’s next. Not just for himself, but for the entire middleweight division apparently.

Strickland

Sean Strickland defied the odds at UFC 293, delivering a picture-perfect performance that saw him leave The Land Down Under as a world champion.

Stepping into the main event spotlight for his first shot at UFC gold, Strickland was sitting as a 7-to-1 underdog going against perhaps the greatest middleweight in the history of the sport, Israel Adesanya. Nobody expected him to walk out of the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, but that’s exactly what happened after he laid it on ‘The Last Stylebender’ for 25 minutes.

Two hours after his stunning performance inside the Octagon, Strickland sat down in front of members of the media at the UFC 293-post-fight press event. Never one to be shy about his struggles growing up in an abusive home, Strickland was asked how that experience may have played a role in his success on Saturday night. Responding, ‘Tarzan’ delivered a tongue-in-cheek response, saying:

“Thank God for child abuse, right? Fuck yeah. Let’s go, childhood traumas or repressed memories… You got me where I needed to be… Dad, you’re f*cking awesome man. All the years of abuse, you really… You really made me the man I had to be today,” Strickland said with a chuckle.

Sean Strickland Credits the UFC with Saving His Life

Taking a more serious tone, Strickland offered his appreciation to the UFC for giving individuals like him a platform.

“I don’t f*cking know, you guys. I’m just happy that this f*cking world has a place for us, you know? If it wasn’t for this, man, I’m sure I would’ve f*cking committed some random act of violence and f*cking been locked up for killing somebody, so f*cking huzzah to UFC man. Thank you for f*cking saving someone’s life, including my own” (h/t MMA News).

After waking up on Sunday morning realizing that Sean Strickland’s five-round shellacking of Israel Adesanya wasn’t a crazy fever dream, many fight fans were quick to ask, what’s next? According to Dana White, an immediate rematch is in order, but that doesn’t seem to be a popular option among fans considering Adesanya is now 1-2 in his last three and lost decisively against the No. 5 ranked contender in the world.

Much of what comes next will rely on Israel Adesanya. Based on White’s comments at the post-fight press event, Adesanya has a rematch waiting for him if he wants it. Should ‘The Last Stylebender’ opt to take some time off and re-evaluate, Sean Strickland’s first defense will likely come against top-ranked contender Dricus Du Plessis. No. 3 ranked contender Jared Cannonier also presents an interesting possibility considering he holds a win over Strickland.
