Sean O'Malley and Marlon 'Chito' Vera

Sean O’Malley shared his prediction for how he sees things playing out in his impending UFC title tilt with top-ten-ranked contender Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera.

As announced by UFC CEO Dana White, O’Malley will put his bantamweight world title on the line when the promotion returns to the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida for UFC 299. The bout will serve as a rematch more than three years in the making.

Meeting in August 2020, ‘Sugar’ suffered his first, and thus far, only defeat inside the Octagon after injuring his leg in the opening round against Vera.

After scoring an impressive second-round knockout to claim the 135-pound crown from former champ Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292, Sean O’Malley’s first wish was to run it back with Vera and set right a blemish on his record that he still refuses to acknowledge.

Taking to social media, ‘Sugar’ offered up a prediction for when things will end between the two bantamweight stars this spring.

“I’ll stop Chito in the 3rd or 4th,” O’Malley wrote on X.

Is Sean O’Malley vs. ‘Chito’ Vera 2 the right fight to make?

Since coming up short against Vera at UFC 251, Sean O’Malley has rattled off five-straight wins, all but one of them coming by way of knockout. By comparison, ‘Chito’ Vera has gone 5-2 during the same timeframe with two finishes. Vera lost a closely contested split decision against Cory Sandhagen in March but bounced back with a unanimous decision win over Pedro Munhoz on the same night that O’Malley captured the bantamweight title.

Fans were initially critical of O’Malley’s decision to pursue a fight with Vera when there are far more deserving contenders in the division awaiting their shot. Most notably, Merab Dvalishvili who is currently riding a nine-fight win streak and thoroughly dominated former titleholder Petr Yan in his last Octagon outing.

Dvalishvili will meet former two-division titleholder Henry Cejudo at UFC 298 in a bout that could potentially serve as a title eliminator.

Geoff Neal brands Ian Garry ‘Low class’ amid mugshot shirt release ahead of UFC 299 fight: ‘I’m going to beat him up’

Geoff Neal i'm going to beat low class Ian Garry for making mugshot shirt ahead of UFC 299

UFC welterweight Geoff Neal discusses Ian Garry and his choice to print a t-shirt featuring Neal’s mugshot.

Garry has not done himself any favours over the past few months. While the Irishman has always had his share of detractors, the levels of criticism have spiked significantly recently.

Some of the criticism has come because of Garry’s private life, but some has come because of his ‘trash talk’ or attempts to get under his opponent’s skin. This includes accusing Neil Magny of child abuse, which Magny has said has impacted his custody battle, and Garry putting Neal’s mugshot on a t-shirt and posting it to social media.

While some of the hate towards Garry for his personal life is unwarranted, it must be said the 26-year-old has opened himself up to some criticism after sharing large parts of life online, and also taking shots at fellow fighters.

Geoff Neal talks of attesting Ian Garry booking

Unfortunately, Garry had tri withdraw from his UFC 296 fight against Vicente Luque after catching pneumonia. Instead of rebooking the fight against the Brazilian, the UFC decided to rebook Garry vs. Neal, this time for UFC 299 in Miami.

Talking of Garry’s previous actions, and looking ahead of their bout, Neal did not seem pleased with Garry and was happy to get the fight rebooked.

“I figured we would run it back after because I got sick and I couldn’t fight that last fight — well, just health issues — so I figured he would want to run it back,” Neal said Monday on The MMA Hour. “But then he was talking s***, ‘Well, I already beat him, so I don’t have to fight him.’ Weird s***. I’m glad we got a chance to run it back now.

“It was difficult, especially after all the s*** he was talking and all the stuff going on. Pulling out of the fight, it just looks bad.”

UFC Signee Michael ‘Venom’ Page Hates Trash Talk, Believes Fighters Should be fined for especially vile remarks

Michael Venom Page

There are lines that Michael ‘Venom’ Page refuses to cross.

The former Bellator MMA standout will make his highly anticipated UFC debut in March against fan favorite and perennial trash-talker Kevin Holland. As excited as ‘Venom’ is to kickstart the hype train for his clash with Holland at UFC 299, don’t expect MVP to go after his opponents’ parents and significant other just to sell a few extra tickets.

“The trash-talking is going to be good, but respectful,” Page said of his meeting with Holland. “What I’ve been seeing so far in combat sports, I hate. I don’t like people talking about people’s fathers, people’s wives, people’s girlfriends, people’s kids, all of that stuff. We need to go back to martial arts” (h/t MMA Fighting).

Fans saw a lot of the sports’ premiere athletes lower themselves in hopes of generating a few extra views to help line their pockets ahead of last weekend’s UFC 296 card. The most egregious example was Colby Covington who made a vile remark regarding Leon Edwards’ deceased father that drew the ire of fighters and fans alike.

Not to be outdone, both Sean O’Malley and Dricus Du Plessis made light of Sean Strickland’s history growing up in an abusive home. A decision that ultimately led to a fistfight in the stands at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday night.

“Everyone seems to have lost themselves a little bit,” Page continued. “I have zero respect for people that feel the need to go that way. We’re skillful athletes, and that should be enough. I’m all for the banter, I’m all for the jokes and keeping it kind of friendly, and that should be enough to build a fight. We can keep the intensity, but it should stay between me and the person that’s fighting, and that’s it.”

‘Venom’ Would Like to see the UFC Re-Introduce Fines

‘Venom’ believes one way the UFC could help quell some of the more colorful language and commentary would be by introducing fines. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time. In 2011, the promotion cut Miguel Torres from the roster for quoting a TV joke about sexual assault. Nate Diaz was once fined for using homophobic language and Matt Mitrione was both fined and suspended after going on a rant about trans fighter Fallon Fox.

“It’s insane,” Page said. “Just do something to kind of alleviate [the problem] – if you’re going to step over the line, I’m not going to punish you open to the public, because it sells, I guess, but there you go. Have that fine. Let’s see how often you’re going to want to do things like that, like the yellow card in football. You don’t want to promote things the wrong way.”

As much as Dana White loves the boost in pay-per-view revenue from the unsavory antics mentioned above, the UFC CEO has made it clear that fighters getting into physical altercations outside the Octagon creates a massive headache for the promotion and the athletic commission.

Unfortunately, both of those things tend to go hand-in-hand when you’re taking things to an unnecessarily personal and downright disgusting level, as evidenced by the full-blown brawl between Sean Strickland and Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 296.

“When it gets that kind of personal, real stuff can actually happen, and it falls back on the UFC,” ‘Venom’ added. “Hopefully, they’ve seen that it’s getting a bit too much, and they tighten it up. But on a positive note, I think me and Holland are going to be the way it should be.”

Do you agree with Michael ‘Venom’ Page? Has trash-talk in the UFC gone too far?

Strickland, who takes main event honors at UFC 297 next month as part of the first pay-per-view event of the year for the promotion, takes on surging contender, Dricus du Plessis as he attempts to defend his crown for the first time.

As for O’Malley, the Dana White’s Contender Series alum is slated to headline UFC 299 in April in the promotion’s return to Miami, taking on soon-to-be two-time foe, Marlon Vera in the pair’s bantamweight championship rematch in Florida.
