Benoit Saint-Denis reveals fight with infection led to UFC 299 knockout loss against Dustin Poirier

Benoit Saint-Denis has provided a health update following his UFC 299 knockout loss to Dustin Poirier.

Saint-Denis entered the fight as the betting favorite and many thought he would run through Poirier. In the first round, he had success, but in the second round, he started to gas and Dustin Poirier made him pay. Poirier landed a big uppercut and then a right hook that knocked Saint-Denis out.

Following the loss, Saint-Denis’s wife Lalou took to Instagram to provide an update on the Frenchman and revealed he won’t need surgery.

“On the health side, the broken nose does not require surgery, two stitches on an arch, blood pressure at 10 on the day,” his wife Lalou wrote on Instagram (via Le Colisee). “He rehydrated little by little, he continues to take antibiotics. We sleep more than 12 hours a night, which hasn’t happened in eight months. He is disappointed in himself. Defeat leaves him with a bitter taste that he will no longer want to taste. Believe me. Thank you all for your energy in supporting our champion in good times and bad.”

It is good news that Saint-Denis won’t need surgery following his UFC 299 loss. But, he was given a 60-day medical suspension following the knockout loss.

“I fought completely dehydrated, frustration is huge but it’s hard to judge when to cancel such an opportunity,” Saint-Denis added. “I’m going to get back to work and fix some things that can’t be neglected and never give you a shadow of myself again. God tests us in so many ways, I’m blessed to be well surrounded and have tremendous support. It’s up to us to show you the ‘BSD’ of the last fights when I return, and earn my revenge against this Louisiana guy.”

Islam Makhachev has welcomed the prospect of a June title showdown with UFC 299 big winner, Dustin Poirier – claiming the Lafayette native possesses a good guillotine choke in response to his call out for a summer championship fight.

Makhachev, the current undisputed lightweight champion and pound-for-pound number one ranked fighter on the promotion’s books, has been sidelined since last October, most recently turning in a blistering first round high-kick and strikes knockout win over Alexander Volkanovski in the pair’s title rematch.

As for Poirier, the Louisianan co-headlined UFC 299 last weekend in Miami, landing an impressive second round KO win over surging French contender, Benoit Saint-Denis – after battling through some notable adversity, and apparent fatigue, according to veteran caller, Joe Rogan.

Receiving an almost immediate offer Makhachev’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz of a June title fight against his client, Poirier has welcomed the prospect of fighting the dominant Russian calling out the former for a June showdown next.

“I know Dustin (Poirier) does not deserve a title fight, but we don’t have any [other] option right now,” Islam Makhachev told MMA Junkie. “Everybody is busy, but I want to fight, you know? I want to fight three times in the year, that’s why I just have to call out someone, and Poirier is free now. And he showed an excellent performance, and scored a beautiful knockout. …”

“He’s a legend, he’s beat a lot of tough guys,” Islam Makhachev said. “And he’s a tough opponent, too. He has a good guillotine.”

Sidelined through the coming months amid his participation in the religious period of Ramadan, Makhachev was rumored to fight for welterweight gold at UFC 300 next month – in a monstrous fight against undisputed gold holder, Leon Edwards, ultimately to no avail.

Marlon Chito Vera accuses Sean O'Malley of greasing before their UFC 299 title fight: 'How much gel they use'

Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera is accusing Sean O’Malley of greasing ahead of their UFC 299 title fight in Miami.

On Saturday (March 9), O’Malley delivered a dominant performance in his first defense of the bantamweight world title, scoring a unanimous decision victory over the only man to have bested him inside the Octagon.

Vera appeared to be humble in defeat, offering no excuses for his performance and showing confidence in his ability to bounce back. However, all of that seemed to change when ‘Chito’ accused O’Malley of greasing. For those unfamiliar, greasing is when a fighter uses a substance that makes himself slippery — an unfair advantage in a sport where grappling and controlling your opponent’s body is an essential aspect.

“Who braid your hair @SugaSeanMMA you where grease to the bone I wonder how much gel they use?” Vera wrote on X.

Generally, when one fighter accuses another of greasing, it’s because they were unable to secure takedowns or even get their hands wrapped around an opponent. Interestingly, ‘Chito’ never once looked to take things down to the ground against O’Malley in their rematch. According to the official stat sheet, he never attempted a takedown, let alone secured one, and clocked zero control time.

Sean O’Malley snaps back at ‘chito’

Responding to Vera’s accusation, Sean O’Malley requested ‘Chito’ Vera forward him a picture of his mangled face.

“Send pic of your face,” O’Malley responded.

Vera has yet to respond to O’Malley’s request, but plenty of fight fans were willing to give the champ a helping hand, posting an image of Vera’s face after eating 230 significant strikes over the 25-minute affair.

With their series officially tied at 1-1, perhaps we’ll see a trilogy fight between the two bantamweight stars. But for now, Vera will go back to the drawing board after failing to head back home with gold wrapped around his waist.

Dustin Poirier takes issue with Joe Rogan's commentary after UFC 299 win I can't believe he said that

Off the back of his spectacular victory over the surging, Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299 over the course of last weekend, former interim lightweight titleholder, Dustin Poirier admits he was a little ticked off by the commentary of stalwart favorite, Joe Rogan – adamantly denying claims he was fatigued in the bout.

Poirier, who retained his number three rank within the division’s rankings off the back of his win, fought through some notable adversity in the opening round against Nimes native, Saint-Denis, wrapping up a thunderous second round stoppage in the form of a KO win over the roughshod running challenger.

Fighting off numerous submission attempts throughout their five round scheduled bout, Poirier shelled up at the fence in the second frame, before unloading a counter left uppercut, momentarily dropping Saint-Denis to one knee.

And circling out, Poirier uncorked a whopper right hook shot, sending Saint-Denis hurtling back to the canvas, forcing a stoppage with a massive ground strike soon thereafter.

Dustin Poirier reflects on UFC 299 win

Reflecting on his win, Poirier, who has sights fixed on a stunning June return in a lightweight title siege against the undisputed, Islam Makhachev, admitted he took umbrage with some comments from Rogan on comms at UFC 299.

“I rewatched the fight last night with my wife when we got back to Lousiana,” Dustin Poirier told MMA Fighting. “Joe Rogan said I was exhausted, said I was tired like five times. Bor, I do not get tired. I have some of the best cardio in this fight sh*t that we do. Like, I can go 25 minutes, hard, cracking the whole time, I can’t believe he said that – I felt good.

“…I thought I was gonna have to break him (Benoit Saint-Denis) down, wear him down a little bit more but I caught him in the middle of a trad when his chin was up and his body wasn’t set for that right hook. The timing of it was just perfect to whip his brain around.”

Addressing his loss to Poirier, Saint-Denis, who saw his stunning winning run of finishes halted at UFC 299, confirmed speculation that he was suffering with an infection during fight week – revealing he required antibiotics to battle the setback – which ultimately effected his cardio.

Sean O'Malley eyes boxing match with Floyd Mayweather after UFC 299 win he's still kicking

UFC bantamweight champion, Sean O’Malley continues to show interest in boxing, this time targeting Floyd Mayweather.

O’Malley is fresh off a phenomenal performance against Marlon Vera, dominating the entire 25-minute fight. After his first successful title reign, ‘Suga’ has never been a bigger name, the fights he can be involved in will only get bigger should he continue down this path.

O’Malley does not seem the keenest on setting a title defence record, however, calling out featherweight champion Ilia Topuria during his post-fight speech. O’Malley has also continued to call out high-level boxers in podcast and media appearances, claiming he could beat the likes of Ryan Garcia should the two square off.

The 29-year-old spoke on The MMA Hour regarding Garcia, who had mentioned the idea of transitioning to MMA. Garcia has also been posting bizarre videos and messages to social media over the past couple of weeks, it is unclear what exactly is going on with him.

“Again, I think mentally that kid isn’t where he needs to be.” Sean O’Malley began. “We’ll see how he looks against Devin Haney and go from there. I think that an MMA fight is so unrealistic, there’s a zero per cent chance he would ever even make it to that fight. It would take one MMA session, one wrestling day, one jiu-jitsu with anyone who knows anything for him to realize this is a bad idea.”

Sean O’Malley name drops Floyd Mayweather

O’Malley would then suggest the idea of boxing Mayweather, who has continued to do regular exhibition contests up until June of last year.

“If anything happened it would be boxing I mean, I don’t even know if I want to build up with that kind of fight given where his head is now,” O’Malley continued. “You know, just because it would be massive. It might not be it, but there’s still big fights up there still. Floyd’s still kicking, Floyd’s still running around in the boxing room.”

Floyd Mayweather

“I keep doing what I’m doing, I might just skip Ryan. I might just skip Gervonta [Davis].” Sean O’Malley concluded on The MMA Hour. “Go straight for the big dog.”

Who wins right now in boxing, Sean O’Malley or Floyd Mayweather?

Michael Venom Page shuts down terrible fight with Stephen Thompson after UFC 299 boring

UFC welterweight Michael Venom Page envisions a ‘boring’ fight against Stephen Thompson should the pair meet in the future.

Page enjoyed a successful UFC debut last Saturday, convincingly outstriking Kevin Holland over three rounds. Holland refused to stay down despite being stunned throughout the contest after being on the receiving end of some flashy, but vicious strikes from Page.

“It’s weird because obviously, I’ve been hearing for years before I even got to the UFC and I always tell people the same thing, two positives don’t always make a positive” Michael Venom Page said during an interview with Sportsnet after UFC 299.

“What will be a great fight for me and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, will look like a terrible fight for everyone else because we’ll go back into auto-pilot of our point-scoring system and there’s a lot of battles that happen without anything really happening.” Page added.

“As soon as I’m about to throw that punch, I can sense that he’s got that counter ready and I might break away,”Page continued. “So, there’s going to be a lot of not much happening in my opinion. I could also be wrong and it could be an amazing fight but from my experience fighting high-level points fighters, it slows everything down.”
