Struggling with the surging prospect’s striking on the feet, Smith somehow managed to force a grappling exchange during an ill-fated takedown attempt from Petrino, and despite finding himself slammed to his back, wrapped up a quickfire first round guillotine choke win.

“What did he (Alex Pereira) say? Alex Pereira said he would put up $50,000, and I start off his back.” Anthony Smith told assembled media after his UFC 301 win. “So, I start off on his back, hooks in, and I’ve got 5 minutes to finish him, and he wants to put $50,000 on it. I’ll take his $50,00. I’ll take his money – if I start off on his back, I’ll choke the sh*t out of him.”

As for Pereira, the former duel-weight champion headlined UFC 300 last month, turning in his first successful defense of the light heavyweight title, courtesy of a first round knockout win over former champion, Jamahal Hill.

And weighing up a title fight rematch with another ex-titleholder, Jiri Prochazka in the immediate future, Pereira was also himself floated as a potential suitor to the heavyweight throne, by current division kingpin, Jon Jones.

Aldo, a former undisputed featherweight champion and inductee into the ‘Fighter Wing’ of the promotion’s Hall of Fame, snapped an almost two-year stay away from the Octagon overnight in his return to Rio de Janeiro.

And taking on the streaking top-10 ranked, Jonathan Martinez, Manaus favorite, Aldo turned in a unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) victory against the former, snapping his six-fight winning run to boot.

Showing off his ever-improving boxing skills, Aldo managed to rock Martinez badly in the third and final round, almost dropping the latter, before assuming top position with a blistering takedown, and riding out the frame on top until the buzzer.

With the victory, Aldo completed his contractual obligations with the organization, and has stressed his desire to compete in another professional boxing match – ideally in July on the undercard of Mike Tyson’s clash with the polarizing, Jake Paul.

However, also weighing up one final potential title run at the bantamweight limit, Andre Pedernerais student, Aldo admitted promotional brass were still entitled to match any contract offer if they wish, or waive their right.

Pantoja, the current undisputed flyweight titleholder, headlined tonight’s return to Rio de Janeiro at UFC 301, having successfully defended his crown at UFC 296 back in December in a rematch judging victory against Brandon Royval.

As for Erceg, the Australian — who was three-fights deep into a winning run and his Octagon stint to boot, earned his title fight with Pantoja tonight off the back of a stunning KO win over Matt Schnell just a month ago.

And beginning in typical aggressive fashion, Pantoja managed to scramble with success throughout his five round back-and-forth against Perth native, Erceg.

However, dealing with a massive cut across his forehead, Pantoja took his foot off the gas considerably in the fourth round — and managed to swing the bout in his favor in the fifth and final frame to successfully retain his throne atop the 125lbs division.

Showing off his much-evolved boxing arsenal — following a pair of boxing bouts that took place in his two years away from the Octagon, Aldo managed to take the first two rounds against Martinez with relative ease on the feet.

Back in the winner’s enclosure in a big way tonight on the main card of UFC 301, former light heavyweight title challenger, Anthony Smith has handed Vitor Petrino his first professional loss on enemy territory, submitting the Brazilian with a hasty guillotine.

Smith, a former light heavyweight title challenger, had been sidelined since he suffered a one-sided knockout loss to incoming UFC 303 co-headliner, Khalil Rountree back in December of last year.

And weighing up a future title charge with emerging rival, Alex Pereira — the incumbent champion at the light heavyweight limit, Smith kickstarted one potential final run at the weight class tonight against the highly-touted, Petrino.

Admittedly struggling with the power of Petrino early in the first round, Nebraska managed to lock up a surprisingly taut guillotine choke on the Brazilian — who inadvertently slammed himself deeper into the choke, before tapping to the veteran former title challenger.

Claiming earlier this week how he had been obsessed with his goal of landing light heavyweight spoils, Smith explained how he may have one final run to a title under his belt.

Pereira, who has landed both knockout and submissions wins over Andre Petroski, and Michal Oleksiejczuk, respectively — extended his winning run to eight straight fights with tonight’s success against Potieria.

Rocking the Ukraine native early during an exchange, Pereira then dropped the former, before backflipping into guard — appearing to catch Potieria on the chest-come-face — risking a potential ‘No Contest‘ if he landed a kick to the head of a grounded opponent.
