Israel Adesanya rips rival Paulo Costa after UFC 302 loss to Sean Strickland he sucks

Israel Adesanya figured Sean Strickland would beat Paulo Costa, so he wasn’t surprised to see him get the win at UFC 302.

Adesanya had fought both Strickland and Costa so he was familiar with both, and before the fight on his YouTube channel, he picked Strickland to win a decision.

After the result was read, Israel Adesanya gave his immediate reaction to it and said Paulo Costa sucks off the back foot so he wasn’t surprised that Sean Strickland was able to win a decision due to his pressure.

“Costa sucks off the back foot — he’s not really good off the back foot,” Israel Adesanya said on YouTube. “He’s doing better in this fight. Costa could set him up so bad here, man, because (Strickland is) so worried about that leg. It’s easier said than done, I’ll tell you that, but if you’ve worked on it, you know how to do it…”

“This is what I thought he would do,” Adesanya continued. “He’s walking him down. He’s possibly losing the rounds because he’s not really landing as much but he’s just like, ‘You know what? I’ll break him and eventually, I’ll just storm him.’ [Strickland] hammer fists your face, that’s how he throws his jab, he just throws a hammer fist.”

It was a good performance from Strickland to return to the win column after losing his middleweight title back in January to Dricus Du Plessis.

Following Sean Strickland getting the win at UFC 302, he called to fight for the belt next time out.

It’s expected that Israel Adesanya will face Dricus Du Plessis next and Strickland says he plans to wait out for a title shot.

“I’m going to wait,” Strickland said at the UFC 302 post-fight press conference. “I f*cking paid my f*cking dues. I paid my dues. I got f*cking robbed [at UFC 297] … we all know I got f*cking robbed, at least Dricus doesn’t back up. So I’m going to sit my f*cking ass in the gym and I’m going to be a team player and I’m going to f*cking wait, and I’m going to f*cking wait until they say, ‘Sean, go beat this man’…”

“As long as it takes,” Strickland said when asked how long he’s willing to wait to fight for the title. “I want the gold. When you’re fighting these top-10 motherf*ckers, you’re only one slip and dodge away from being knocked out. I paid my penance, I did what we did, I went and fought Costa. I didn’t want to, I did it. Give me the f*cking title shot. I beat Izzy and that motherf*cker gets a title shot.”

Sean Strickland is currently the No. 1 contender at middleweight and is 29-6 as a pro.

Dustin Poirier suffered rib injury two weeks before UFC 302 title fight he couldn't wrestle or grapple

Former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier reportedly entered his UFC 302 title fight with Islam Makhachev over the course of the weekend with a lingering rib injury, according to former lightweight star, Yves Edwards – limiting his ability to wrestle or grapple in preparation for the bout.

Poirier, a former interim lightweight titleholder and the current number four ranked division contender, headlined UFC 302 over the course of last weekend against pound-for-pound number one, Makhachev – eventually succumbing to a fifth round submission.

Turning in a valiant performance against the pound-for-pound leader, Poirier was forced to tap to a late D’Arce choke, before eventually going unconscious.

And in the immediate aftermath, following an embrace with Makhachev and former foe, Khabib Nurmagomedov who coached the defending champion in New Jersey, Poirier admitted that he had likely made his final Octagon walk following a storied career in combat sports.

However, with Makhachev confirming a pre-existing staph infection amid speculation of a setback ahead of UFC 302, the above-mentioned, Edwards claimed Poirier had suffered a rib injury just two weeks from the clash, limiting his ability to grapple and wrestle.

“The way he (Dustin Poirier) performed on Saturday night, that was super impressive to me,” Yves Edwards said on MMA Today. “Nobody knows this and he probably is gonna be like, ‘Man, why’d you put that out there?’ But like, I know (Islam) Makhachev was also not 100 percent, nobody goes into a fight 100 percent, but he hurt his ribs two weeks before the fight and hadn’t wrestled or grappled for two and a half weeks.”

“I probably shouldn’t [reveal that], but to me it’s so impressive against that guy,” Edwards explained. “Against somebody else, it wouldn’t matter. Against that guy, Islam, man, you wrestled like that against that guy with hurt ribs. I’m impressed.”

Kamaru Usman floats fantasy clash with Dustin Poirier after UFC 302 that would be a fun fight

Linked with an impending return to the Octagon for the first time since late last year, former welterweight kingpin, Kamaru Usman may have turned down a grudge fight with Jan Blachowicz last week, however, has suggested a fantasy matchup with Dustin Poirier after UFC 302.

Poirier, a former interim lightweight champion, headlined UFC 302 over the course of the weekend in New Jersey, suffering an eventual fifth round submission loss to undisputed divisional champion, Islam Makhachev.

And weighing up a potential – and admittedly likely retirement from combat sports following his third unsuccessful siege of the undisputed lightweight crown, Poirier was immediately offered one last rodeo by former featherweight titleholder, Alexander Volkanovski

However, insisting he is not throwing his name into the ring to face Poirier in his return, Auchi veteran, Usman has claimed a fight with the American Top Team star would be “fun” – claiming the two would push each other to their respective limits.

“He’s (Dustin Poirier) got fights,” Kamaru Usman said on his Pound 4 Pound podcast. “The (Alexander) Volkanovski fight could – that’s a fun fight. I’m not in any way throwing my hat in, but [if] he wants to go up [to welterweight], don’t do it. I’m not saying that, but I always put my mind there. If I was to ever compete against a guy like Dustin Poirier, that would be a fantastic one because it’s a guy that I could really respect though and through the process.”

“It’s like you and your main training partner and you’re just like, ‘Yeah, we’re going to beat each other up.” Kamaru Usman explained. “‘We’re going to push each other to the brink.’ That would be a fun fight, but I’m not throwing [my name in the] hat.”

Paulo Costa vows to take heads off in return after Sean Strickland loss at UFC 302 I have the power

Paulo Costa plans to change the way he fights following his UFC 302 loss to Sean Strickland.

Costa was coming off a decision loss to Robert Whittaker back in February and was making a rather quick turnaround in his standards to face Strickland in a five-round co-main event on Saturday at UFC 302. Early on Paulo Costa was doing well, but as the fight played out, Strickland began to take over.

When the final bell rang, it was Sean Strickland who edged out the decision. After dropping back-to-back competitive decisions, Costa vows to drop his point-fighting style and once again go for the knockouts.

“Yeah, Sean won. I didn’t perform very well,” Paulo Costa said (via MMAMania). “I think he didn’t either, but at least he did enough to win, right? This is two losses in a row in three fights, three former champs — Luke Rockhold, Whittaker, and Sean. I won one and lost two.”

“But let me tell you something, I agree with Dana [White] and Joe Rogan, and I will do that — I will bring back the Paulo that takes heads off, to finish the fight. Sorry. I’m not that kind of counter guy. I do better moving forward and trying to finish and look for heads. Sean is so awkward, so different kind of fighter to fight against, it’s difficult. He was teeping me, keep pushing me, keeping me far from him, because he knows the power that I have. And I have the power, so I need to deliver that — and I will do that,” Paulo Costa added.

“I won’t give a f—,” Costa declared. “F— points, or conserving energy, or f— anything about that. I will come to take heads off. And this is who I am, this is the kind of fighter I am, and the fighter who people expect that I perform. So I will do that. F— points, I’ve enough of this. Even the first round that I was 100 percent sure that I won, some people thought I lost. F— them. I will come to take heads off. That’s it. Who I am.”

Costa hasn’t recorded a knockout win since 2018 when he TKO’d Uriah Hall.

Dana White Rips Judge Who Scored UFC 302 Fight For Paulo Costa

Paulo Costa suffered a split decision loss to Sean Strickland, however, the fight was rather clear for the former champ and UFC CEO Dana White didn’t agree with the split decision result.

After the event, White took time to blast the judge who scored it for Costa and said he shouldn’t judge another big fight agian.

“It wasn’t weird – it was f*cking nuts is what it was,” White said. “It’s insane. That guy should never (judge) a big fight again. They should kick him back down to the minor leagues and let him work on his judging. It’s unbelievable. How anybody who isn’t an absolute f*cking lunatic could call that fight a split decision … I don’t even know what to say about that. It’s insane. That guy shouldn’t be judging big fights.”

With the loss at UFC 302, Costa is now 14-4 and is 1-4 in his last five fights.

Michael Chandler issues warning to Islam Makhachev after UFC 302 see you sooner or later

Ahead of his own UFC 303 return at the end of the month, it seems Michael Chandler already has one eye on a challenge to Islam Makhachev’s undisputed throne following the Russian’s title fight win overnight at UFC 302 against common-opponent, Dustin Poirier in New Jersey.

Chandler, the current number six ranked lightweight contender, returns at the end of this month in the main event of UFC 303 during International Fight Week, making a welterweight appearance in a grudge fight against the returning veteran, Conor McGregor.

Sidelined since he faced the previously mentioned Poirier two years ago, Missouri native, Chandler suffered a third round rear naked choke submission loss to the former interim gold holder at Madison Square Garden.

And preparing to take the stage at the 3Arena in Dublin tomorrow afternoon, Chandler is set to face-off with the above-mentioned, McGregor in a massive press conference in the Irish capital, ahead of their end-of-month showdown at UFC 303.

Michael Chandler echoes calls for Islam Makhachev fight

With one eye seemingly always on the movement of defending champion, Makhachev in recent months, Chandler heaped praise on both the Russian and prior foe, Poirier’s performances at UFC 302 in Newark, before issuing a word of warning to Makhachev, vowing to fight him in the near future.

“Last night @MAKHACHEVMMA showed a lot of versatility and grit in an otherwise adversity-less run thus far,” Michael Chandler posted on his X account. “Good to see him tested by one of the best to ever do it, bloodied up and proving he has that dog in him. Stellar championship performance. See you, sooner or later.”

Welcoming the chance to make a long-rumored move to the welterweight limit in pursuit of a second Octagon crown, Makhachev admitted that while a rematch with Arman Tsarukyan – who is enjoying his own streak through contenders, was not the most appealing pairing to him, he would honor a re-run if the UFC wanted to make the bout next.

Former undisputed lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov was less than pleased to learn overnight how judge, Chris Lee had the UFC 302 headliner between Dustin Poirier, and the Russian’s training partner, Islam Makhachev tied ahead of a fifth and final round.

Nurmagomedov, who featured in the corner of Makhachev overnight at UFC 302 in New Jersey, watched on as his protége landed an eventual fifth round submission win over former interim champion, Poirier – locking up a taut D’Arce choke on their common-foe.

Successfully defending his lightweight crown for the third time following prior successive successful defenses against former featherweight pacesetter, Alexander Volkanovski – Makhachev likely sent Poirier into retirement from the sport to boot.

And staking his claim once more for a shot at the welterweight title – which is up for grabs as soon as next month in the main event of UFC 304, pound-for-pound number one, Makhachev also reluctantly weighed up a rematch with Arman Tsarukyan.

However, dealing with some decent adversity in the form of a massive laceration on his forehead caused in the fourth round – as well as an admitted staph infection in his left leg ahead of UFC 302, Makhachev was in need of a round win to defend his title successfully, according to judge, Lee’s scorecard.

Khabib Nurmagomedov disgusted with UFC 302 judge

Upon learning of the official’s card, Nurmagomedov, who coached Makhachev to last night’s win alongside American Kickboxing Academy leader, Javier Mendez – urged friend, Daniel Cormier to find out Lee’s “location” for him.

“2-2, how?” Khabib Nurmagomedov replied to Cormier who informed him how judge, Chris Lee had the bout between Makhachev and Poirier even ahead of the fifth round. “One judge gave a lot of fights crazy, crazy numbers – like 50-45. Send me this guy’s name and location.”

Sharing his immediate thoughts on Makhachev’s performance, Nurmagomedov claimed the Makhachkala native “grew” a lot in his fight with Poirier, given the adversity he was forced to overcome.
