Dricus du Plessis retains title, submits Israel Adesanya with rear-naked choke - UFC 305 Highlights

Dricus du Plessis remains the undisputed middleweight champion tonight following his return at UFC 305 — landing a late fourth round rear-naked choke submission win over former two-division titleholder, Israel Adesanya in their title grudge fight in Perth, Australia.

du Plessis, the incumbent undisputed middleweight champion, made his first defense of the divisional crown tonight ‘Downunder’ — having landed the belt back in January of this year with a controversial split decision win over common-foe, Sean Strickland.

And sharing a close opening round with City Kickboxing star, Adesanya in their UFC 305 main event, du Plessis almost setup a rear-naked choke twice in the second frame — with the ex-champion battling his way out during an exciting early scramble.

Striking and plodding forward themselves in the third and fourth rounds, du Plessis would stun Adesanya in the penultimate frame of their headliner at UFC 305 — dropping the Nigerian-Kiwi with winging strikes, before taking his back and locking up a spectacular rear-naked choke to successfully defend his crown for the first time.

Dan Hooker will find himself back in the upper echelon of the lightweight division once again after UFC 305, as he defeated Mateusz Gamrot in a closely contested war.

Gamrot got off to a strong start in the opening round, landing damaging shots on Hooker and nearly locking him in a submission. Hooker, however, seemed to show some fire in the closing seconds of the round.

That fire continued into the second round, as “The Hangman” brought forth plenty of pressure against Gamrot, including some sharp elbows. That said, Gamrot did not relent in his offense either.

The third ultimately proved to be a very even round, with both men trading control throughout.

Two judges gave the fight to Hooker, giving the win to the Oceania fighter.

Hooker has now won three straight and will be likely in for a big opportunity in his next outing. The New Zealander himself mentioned in his post-fight interview a BMF title fight with Max Holloway, a showdown with Conor McGregor and a title eliminator (or interim title fight) with Arman Tsarukyan.

This fight snapped a three-fight win streak for Gamrot, meanwhile. Entering this fight, only he and Tsarukyan had wins in their most recent fights out of those in the top five of the lightweight contender rankings.

Veteran lightweight challenger, Dan Hooker has likely returned himself to the elites of the divisional rankings ahead of next week — landing a close, split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) victory against Polish contender, Mateusz Gamrot on the main card of UFC 305.

Auckland native, Hooker, a perennial contender in the lightweight division, arrived tonight in his return against Gamrot off the back of consecutive wins over both Claudio Puelles, and last year, Jalin Turner.

And snapping the impressive rise of the former two-weight KSW champion, Gamrot tonight ‘Downunder’, pressure was the name of the game for City Kickboxing star, Hooker from the outset and throughout their three round matchup at 155lbs.

Dropping Gamrot with a clipping shot behind the ear in the dying moments of the first round, Hooker would make it back to his feet following a handful of successful takedowns from Gamrot in the second and final frames en route to a close split win — New Zealand striker, Hooker would then call for a symbolic BMF title fight, as well as a clash with former champion, Conor McGregor, or a title-eliminator matchup next.
