Oban Elliott secured his first finish inside the Octagon in the second fight of the night at UFC 309 when he squared off with Bassil Hafez at welterweight.

“The Welsh Gangster” came into the fight off back-to-back wins since signing via Dana White’s Contender Series last year but wanted to produce a statement this time around.

His displays against Val Woodburn and Preston Parsons showed a lot of sides to his game, but with both wins coming via decision, a finish is what he wanted at UFC 309. That’s exactly what he delivered at the world’s most famous arena.

The opening two rounds weren’t particularly action-packed, with Elliott seemingly winning the fight convincingly with his striking from the outside, utilizing his speed and a variety of kicks to stop Hafez from closing the distance. Despite the favorite appearing in control up until the finish, two judges had the fight even going into the third whilst one had Hafez up two.

At the start of the third frame, a huge right overhand from the Welshman sent his opponent crashing to the canvas.

Several follow-up strikes on the ground forced Marc Goddard to step in and wave the fight off, producing the first finish of the night back in the old gloves.

Eduarda Moura Snaps Veronica Hardy's Four-Fight Win Streak, Earns Unanimous Decision Victory - UFC 309 Highlights

Eduarda Moura snapped Veronica Hardy’s four-fight win streak and moved herself to 11-1 with an impressive three-round showing to kick off UFC 309 in NYC.

Moura stuck Hardy with a big right hand early on, that immediately put the Venezuelan on her backfoot. Hardy struggled to close the distance but managed to land a nice body kick at the end of a combination. However, Moura quickly made her pay for it with another booming right hand that popped Hardy’s back.

In the final seconds of the first, Hardy attempted to close the distance and connect with another body kick, but Moura quickly responded with a takedown that put a pretty big stamp on the first five minutes.

In the opening seconds of the second stanza, Hardy landed a nice left hand — her best of the fight up to that point — but Moura quickly shut things down with another successful takedown attempt.

Hardy attempted to fight her way back up for a majority of the round but ultimately acquiesced to the position and rode out the clock.

Eduarda Moura

Likely down 2-0 going into the third, Hardy came out aggressive, but Moura once again caught her with a right-hand coming in. That prompted Hardy to start throwing kicks from the outside — including a punishing lead leg attack with a minute to go.

Hardy wasn’t able to muster much offense beyond that, bringing an end to their three-round affair with little fanfare.

Official Result: Eduarda Moura def. Veronica Hardy via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

Chris Weidman’s return to New York at UFC 309, which some anticipated to be a potential retirement fight, will now not take place.

Just hours before he and Eryk Anders were scheduled to make the walk for their fight on the preliminary card at Madison Square Garden, Anders was forced out of the bout with a medical issue, per an announcement at the start of the early prelim broadcast.

The reports of the fight’s cancelation were first reported on X by users @TheMMAFoo and @MagicM_MMABets.

Chris Weidman vs. Eryk Anders Scrapped From UFC 309 At Last Minute

This was to be Weidman’s first fight in New York since being knocked out by Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza at UFC 230.

Weidman is 1-1 in his comeback from his horrific leg break against Uriah Hall at UFC 261. His retirement bout was not confirmed, but plenty of pundits and fans expected the former middleweight champion to potentially call time on his career after tonight’s bout.

Anders, meanwhile, last fought in March, defeating Jamie Pickett.

As a result of the cancellation, the preliminary card start time has been pushed back to 6:30pm ET.

Paul Craig Does Not Matter to Bo Nickal – “It’s Just Another Challenge” at UFC 309

Paul Craig Does Not Matter to Bo Nickal - "It’s Just Another Challenge" at UFC 309

Bo Nickal faces his toughest test yet at UFC 309, but for the former Nittany Lion, it’s just another day at the office.

Storming into the UFC last year and picking up three-straight finishes, Nickal will meet submission specialist Paul Craig as part of Saturday’s highly anticipated pay-per-view event inside Madison Square Garden.

Bo Nickal

Nickal has been steadily increasing the difficulty each time he steps inside the Octagon, but ‘Bearjew’ will undoubtedly be his biggest challenge thus far. Craig is a 26-fight veteran with 18 of those scraps coming under the UFC banner. Along the way, Craig has scored nine finishes, including six submission and three KOs.

Of course, none of that matters to Nickal.

“I think it’s just a step up in competition for me. Who I fight doesn’t matter as much as the way I’m developing and improving in the sport. So, you know, I think he’s a guy that has a ton of experience. He’s a guy that poses a lot of danger and some interesting problems to solve. It makes sense for my career and where I’m at.

“It’s not really anything personal at all. It’s just another challenge.”

Bo Nickal not surprised by being a massive favorite at UFC 300

Nickal is a perfect 6-0 in his mixed martial career so far and boasts a 100% finish rate with only one of his opponents making it out of the opening round. Meanwhile, Craig will be looking to climb back into the win column after dropping back-to-back bouts against Brendan Allen and Caio Borralho.

Bo Nickal

Despite facing a known finisher with plenty of experience to boot, Nickal is sitting as a massive -1100 favorite while ‘Bearjew’ is a 7-to-1 underdog.

Bo Nickal

“No, the odds don’t really surprise me,” Nickal told Ariel Helwani. “I actually figured they would be even crazier. It’s almost like a mania. Every time I come to fight, I think the people know who is going to win, so it’s all good.”
