UFC featherweight contender Calvin Kattar thinks he deserved to win on the judges’ scorecards against Josh Emmett at UFC Austin.

Kattar and Emmett were both coming off of impressive wins heading into their UFC Austin headliner. In what was expected to be a back-and-forth war, the two featherweight contenders lived up to expectations as they brawled for 25 minutes on the feet.

It was a very close fight from the opening minutes as both Kattar and Emmett dealt their fair share of damage in the Octagon. In the end, Emmett would walk away with the split decision win to earn his fifth-straight victory.

During the UFC Austin ESPN+ post-fight show, Kattar gave his initial reaction to his five-round battle with Emmett.

“I just thought I was going to get my hand raised at the end of it,” Kattar said. “I didn’t care, we give a sh*t if it’s unanimous or a split. I thought I did enough to win the fight. Josh is a class act, a tough kid. Congrats to him and his team.

“… There was never a point I thought I could sit back, but I thought I was edging him out, especially the longer the fight went. The fifth round, I thought I took it. I know he wanted to stand in the center and bang but I mean, that’d be cool I guess if I wasn’t up in the fight, maybe. I thought I was landing the better shots, but I’m not a judge. It went the way it did, but I thought I did enough to win the fight.” (h/t MMA Junkie)

UFC fans were divided on how they scored Kattar vs. Emmett, and the same can be said for the judges. Two judges gave Emmett a 48-47 victory, with one judge giving Kattar the win by the same score.

A few of the rounds in the fight were difficult for most to definitively score, as both Kattar and Emmett had their fair share of moments throughout the battle. Kattar seemed to hold the advantage from a volume standpoint, while Emmett arguably landed the more damaging blows.

Kattar surged back into the featherweight title conversation following a win over Giga Chikadze back in January. Following his latest defeat, he’ll look to pick up the pieces and come out victorious in his expected return later this year.

Phil Hawes, Daniel Cormier

Phil Hawes has issued an apology to Daniel Cormier after the two men were involved in an altercation at UFC Austin.

This past Saturday, Phil Hawes took on Deron Winn in a middleweight contest at UFC Austin. Hawes put in a dominant performance to score a standing TKO victory in round two following multiple knockdowns and consecutive elbow strikes to slice his opponent. As good as a showing that was, Hawes proceeded to land himself in hot water with UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier.

Phil Hawes apologizes to Daniel Cormier for the verbal altercation

Following the victory, a heated Hawes would initiate an argument with Cormier that would turn into a back-and-forth verbal altercation. Hawes had said that Cormier “picked the wrong pony”, claiming the former two-division champion was biased towards his teammate Winn for the competition.

Cormier was adamant that he did not pick any favorites and referee Herb Dean had to step in to separate the two. ‘DC’ urged Hawes to be more respectful and the New Jersey striker apologized to Cormier shortly after the spat.

During the post-fight press conference, Phil Hawes expanded on the events that had transpired and stated that it was simply a misunderstanding.

“Yeah, it was just a misunderstanding on my behalf,” Hawes said. “‘DC’ is such a role model to me, [he’s] a two-weight world champion, just a stellar dude. So it was just a miscommunication. Wrong place, wrong time.

“I apologize, ‘DC.’ Don’t beat me up.” (h/t MMA Fighting)

Hawes shares his thoughts on whether the fight should’ve been stopped earlier

The 33-year-old bounced back from a loss to Chris Curtis last November. Hawes looked commanding in the fight as he viciously pieced Winn apart. While the referee Dean called a stop to the contest late in the second round, some argued that the stoppage should’ve been called earlier given how many times Winn was wobbled in the first round.

When asked about whether he believes the fight should’ve been ended earlier, ‘No Hype’ said, “Herb Dean and the UFC have been here for a while and I think they know what they’re doing. I’m just going to let them do what they do, I’m going to do what I’m going to do. Fighting in there is tough enough I don’t want to do their jobs, I know what to do.”

Phil Hawes now stands with a record of four wins and a loss under the banner after making his way into the UFC through Dana White‘s Contender Series.

Joe Lauzon, Donald Cerrone

Joe Lauzon was scheduled to face Donald Cerrone at UFC Austin.

This past Saturday, Joe Lauzon was forced to withdraw from his planned outing with Donald Cerrone due to health issues. Lauzon was visibly absent from the ceremonial weigh-ins although he had made weight in the official ones. The 38-year-old was dealing with cramps and later revealed he couldn’t move his leg.

The contest between the two grizzled veterans was called off in what can be considered a sacrifice to the MMA gods based on the firecracker of a card that fans got barring that one fight.

It marked the second time their bout had been canceled on fight day. The pair were supposed to compete last month at UFC 274 but the matchup was written off after Cerrone got food poisoning on the day of the event.

Joe Lauzon knee works again after watching video

In a bizarre turn of events, Joe Lauzon would later reveal on his Instagram that the knee injury he suffered had suddenly recovered after watching a video someone sent him.

“So you can’t make this up, but my knee works again,” Lauzon said. “Someone sent me a video maybe an hour ago on Instagram about like, ‘This sounds like something I deal with with my knee. You should check out this video.’ And it was 100 percent, everything was exactly the problem I was having.

“It was called a ‘tib-fib dislocation.’ So basically the bones in my leg were dislocated. That’s why we couldn’t get it back. So I did the exercise in the video and it popped back in. It’s insane. My leg fully works. I’m able to hop, walk, jump.

I literally could not put socks on, I couldn’t lift my foot off the bed, I couldn’t stand, I couldn’t put any weight on it, I couldn’t do anything the last day and a half. I had to try and hobble and I couldn’t even hop on one foot because I couldn’t take my foot shaking. It was horrible.” (h/t MMAFighting.com)

UFC President Dana White told reporters that he has no plans to make the fight happen again. He referred to the failed attempts at putting together Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson but did not reveal what’s next for the two seasoned professionals.

Kevin Holland scored an impressive win over Tim Means.

This past Saturday, Holland made his second walk to the cage as a welterweight against Tim Means at UFC Austin. Holland put in an impressive performance to come out on top by finishing Means in the second round via submission (d’arce choke).

‘Trailblazer’ had built a reputation for himself as a trash talker when he competed in the middleweight division. While he toned down the talk in favor of more fighting, there were some interesting words exchanged inside the cage.

Kevin Holland reveals a Captain America reference by Tim Means

During the UFC Post Show for ESPN MMA, Kevin Holland was asked if he was surprised by anything Means did. ‘Trailblazer’ shared that the talking was unexpected and revealed some words he exchanged with his opponent inside the octagon.

“His talking,” Holland said. “Just good, respectful talk back-and-forth. I had threw a sidekick to the leg but I told him I was going to try and keep it off the knee and he said, ‘I agree. Let’s keep ’em off the knee.’

“I hit him with a good shot and I was like, ‘man, you took that well,’ and he was like, ‘all day, baby! All day.’ The only thing I could think of was Captain America when he was getting beat up and he was like, ‘I can do this all night.’

“So, I was like man, Tim is so game this is wonderful. I was just in there having a great time with Tim. OG, veteran, somebody like him, you just can’t put nothing past him. I felt myself getting a little off-balanced a couple of times doing the thing I was supposed to do and I had to remember like, ‘correct yourself because Tim will take you out if you don’t.’”

Following the fight, Holland called out Sean Brady for his next outing. He shared that it was Brady who asked for him and that the matchmakers had informed him of Brady’s callout prior to his co-main event fight.

Eddie Wineland

Inaugural WEC bantamweight champion, Eddie Wineland has confirmed his retirement from professional mixed martial arts with immediate effect, following an opening round knockout defeat against Cody Stamann at UFC Austin last night at the Moody Center.

Wineland, 37, calls time on his professional career, boasting a 24-16-1 professional record, in the midst of a three-fight losing run.

A 19 year professional veteran, Wineland, who made his professional debut back in 2003, managed to clinch the inaugural bantamweight title under the now-defunct, WEC banner back in 2006, stopping Antonio Banuelos with an opening round high-kick.

Featuring on last night’s UFC Austin card, Wineland suffered a 59-second knockout loss against Stamann, confirming his retirement from professional mixed martial arts and active competition in a post on his official Instagram this Sunday afternoon.

“I didn’t get an opportunity to leave my gloves in the cage but as Jim Morrison once sang, ’This is the end’,” Eddie Wineland posted on his official Instagram. “The road I’ve travelled over the past almost 20 years has seen many highs and lows, it’s been a fun ride but this train has reached its final destination!”

“I am forever grateful and extremely thankful for the opportunities given by the UFC, Dana White and Sean Shelby, everything you uys and the company have done for and given to me I am forever grateful,” Eddie Wineland continued. “Thank you and thank you to the fans for who’ve always stood in my corner, officially retired. Thank you for the memories, time to turn the page, and on to the next chapter in life!”

In his most recent professional victory, Wineland stopped Gregory Popov at UFC 238 in June 2019.

Debuting in the UFC back in March 2011, Wineland once challenged for interim bantamweight gold against former champion, Renan Barao, suffering a second round spinning back kick knockout loss to the Brazilian.

Eddie Wineland notched six victories during his UFC stint

During his lengthy Octagon tenure, Wineland defeated Takeya Mizugaki, Frankie Saenz, Yves Jabouin, Brad Pickett, and Scott Jorgensen.

Wineland’s retirement from professional mixed martial arts comes off the back of a series of other high-profile retirements in the sport this month – with featherweight standout, Zabit Magomedsharipov hanging up his gloves, while former undisputed strawweight champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk also called time on her decorated career.

Josh Emmett

Josh Emmett has announced himself to be the best featherweight on the planet.

This past Saturday, Emmett took on fan-favorite Calvin Kattar in the headlining fight of UFC Austin. In a close-fought contest that could’ve gone either way, Emmett secured a razor-thin win by a split decision. Emmett was not in the top five going into the bout but is likely to move up after beating the fourth-ranked contender at featherweight.

Josh Emmett says he’s “the best featherweight on the planet”

Emmett, 37 years old, is looking for what would likely be his final run at the promotional gold. Following his victory at UFC on ESPN 37, the California native believes he’s done enough to get a title shot.

During the post-fight press conference, Josh Emmett revealed his plans ahead and declared himself to be the best fighter at 145lbs.

“I want that (title) shot,” Emmett said. “I said the number two and three guys they’re phenomenal fighters, they’ve fought the top guys, Max Holloway, and Alexander Volkanovski. We need some new blood in the division. I know I can compete with them.

I’m the best featherweight on this planet and I’m ready. I want to be sitting cage side in two weeks to see who I’m fighting next.”

How likely is Emmett to get a title shot?

Reigning UFC Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski is set to face Max Holloway for a third time on July 2 at UFC 276. The co-main event of the night will have significant implications for other contenders in the division, including Josh Emmett.

When asked about who he would prefer to come out on top of that contest, Emmett said that he didn’t have a dog in the race but expanded on more on matching up with Volkanovski than Holloway.

“It doesn’t really matter. They’re both phenomenal fighters, some of the best featherweights of all time but the way I do see it though if Volkanovski wins, then he solidifies himself as the GOAT for now. If Max were to win, I know Volkanovski won the first one, it was decisive. The second one was a little controversial, super close, could go either way.

“Doesn’t really matter but Volkanovski is a phenomenal champion. He’s undefeated in the UFC, he’s on some 20-something fight win streak. I think him and I match up really well, stylistically. I know I can compete with these guys. I know I can beat these guys.”

Emmett would like Volkanovski to retain his title if he is to get a title shot. If Holloway becomes the new champion, an immediate rematch would likely be on the cards leaving Emmett on the sidelines for longer to get his chance at the strap.
