Vinc Pichel Vs. Damien Brown

Damien Brown will be high on confidence given that he has not just taken on the likes of Cesar Arzamendia and Jon Tuck, but has also defeated them in the very recent past. Brown is an Australian fighter and won’t be too far away from home when he fights Vinc Pichel in Auckland on June 10th in the UFC 110 Fight Night in Auckland.

Brown is a good all rounder and has sharp striking skills which makes him a force to be reckoned with no matter who he is up against. His ground game is also solid and he has been in top physical shape and has been able to fight quite frequently with four competitive fights just in the previous year.

On the contrary, Pichel has not been anywhere as active as Brown. Pichel has been out of action for the previous three years. A sabbatical of such a lengthy duration can make anyone rather rusty upon their return irrespective of how often and how hard you have been training. In fact, this is one of the main reasons why Pichel is an underdog in the fight and Brown is a strong favorite.

However, even though he has been out of action for a substantial period of time, it is not to say that Pichel was not getting results before his temporary retirement. He was on a great run until he was put on the sidelines in 2014 after back to back losses at the hands of Garret Whiteley and Anthony Njokunal. Pichel certainly is an exciting fighter to watch and a fan favorite. He is aggressive and heavy handed.

Prediction – Despite being out of action for three long years, we predict an upset here with underdog Vinc Pichel to win by unanimous decision.

Luke Jumeau Vs. Dominique Steele

Fighting in the 170 lbs category are Luke Jumeau and Dominique Steele who will face on in Auckland Fight Night on June 10th. Luke Jumeau (11-3) is also known as The Jedi and he has been on the raise since he lost at the hands of Jingliang Li and Jake Matthews. Since these two defeats, Jumeau has been able to turn his form around and has looked solid in his last six wins, which have all been victories. His most recent fight was against highly experienced Vik Grujic whom he took on and knocked out in the second round.

Jumeau has five wins by knockouts to his name. Will he be able to add Dominique Steel to this list?

Dominique Steele is actually entering the Octagon to face Jumeau after his previous two fights have been losses. However, these were both unanimous decisions and both were really close calls which could have gone his way on a different day. Prior to the two unanimous losses, Jumeau took on Dong Hyun Kim and knocked him out with a spectacular slam. Jumeau’s strengths are his set of heavy hands and he also has some deadly low kicks in his arsenal which can be really devastating when he connects.

Dominique Steele, will be hungry for a win. He has suffered four knock outs in the recent past and has a lot to prove to himself if not to everyone else. His strategy will be to stay in the fight and run the clock down while tiring out Jumeau and slowly raking up technical points in order to win by decision.

Prediction – while Jumeau is a little bit of a favorite, we think Steele really can change his form with this match with a win by unanimous decision.

UFC Fight Night 110 – John Moraga Vs. Ashkan Mokhtarian

Ashkan Mokhtarian will be making his debut in Fight Night Auckland on June 10th. For his very first fight, he is really going to have an uphill battle when he comes up against John Moraga. Ashkan Mokhtarian will be making his debut in Fight Night Auckland on June 10th. For his very first fight, he is really going to have an uphill battle when he comes up against John Moraga. Moraga was once a title challenger, and has plenty of experience in the octagon unlike Ashkan Mokhtarian.

Even though he is a newcomer who is completely unproven, Ashkan Mokhtarian does have a lot of potential. This might be his very first UFC bout, but he has been fighting competitively for a while now and is coming off the back of  a pretty impressive six-fight win streak which includes three knockouts and two submissions. Ashkan Mokhtarian has a background in both Brazilian Jiu Jiutsu and conventional kick boxing. However, his wrestling game certainly needs a lot of work and it will be his weakness when he comes up face to face against John Moraga on June 10th.

Moraga has a pretty strong advantage being well trained in wrestling. He was very successful in collegiate wrestling in his home state of Arizona. Needless to say, his grappling game is in a different league when compared to Ashkan Mokhtarian and this might be where he will excel this weekend in Auckland.

Moraga will be undoubtedly trying to hit Ashkan Mokhtarian with a takedown and get the fight to the floor. If the fight does hit the mat, then it may not be long before we see Ashkan Mokhtarian tapping out from an inescapable submission.

In conclusion, unless Ashkan Mokhtarian has some real good tricks up his sleeve, the experience, power and skill of Moraga should suffice to secure the victory in this fight.

Prediction – fight to go to judges, John Moraga to win by unanimous decision.

UFC Fight Night 110 – Tim Elliott Vs. Ben Nguyen

Tim Elliot really has turned the tables around since his re-introduction into the UFC by way of The Ultimate Fighter. Elliot has really proved his mettle and it is visibly evident that he has been getting better and better with every fight. His confidence is growing and so is his sheer ability and skills in the octagon. Elliot has not really had a long time to prepare for Ben Nguyen specifically, because he took up the opportunity on such short notice, but he is still the favorite to win this fight by a rather substantial margin. Furthermore, neither has Ben Nguyen been able to train particularly knowing that he will be fighting Elliot.

Elliot really does not mess about in the ring, from the moment the bell rings till the fight ends, he is always going in for the attack relentlessly, one after the other. Nguyen has powerful striking force and does have the capacity to take Elliot out with one good blow. However, getting that one good blow is not going to be a cake walk by any extent of the imagination. If the fight goes to the floor, Elliot is still well equipped to deal with it because his scrambling and grappling abilities are really second to none in his weight division. Elliot only has his sights set on climbing up the ladder and into one of the top five rankings in the weight division and a win against Nguyen will really get the ball rolling on that ambition.

Nguyen really has to be on point if he wants to cause an upset here. His best strategy going in will be to stay sharp, dodge attacks. stay on the back foot, defend take downs and strike with one of his deadly blows the moment Elliot lets his guard down.

Prediction – Elliot to win by submission

UFC Fight Night 110 – Alexander Volkanovski Vs. Mizuto Hirota

This is one of the fights in UFC Fight Night 110 Auckland on June 10th where neither of the fighters are in front of home support. Alexander Volkanovski debuted in the UFC in November of 2016 and it was a debut to remember. He faced Yusuke Kasuya and was able to clinch the victory pretty […]

This is one of the fights in UFC Fight Night 110 Auckland on June 10th where neither of the fighters are in front of home support. Alexander Volkanovski debuted in the UFC in November of 2016 and it was a debut to remember. He faced Yusuke Kasuya and was able to clinch the victory pretty early into the fight, he won by technical knock – out right in the second round itself. However, it has been a while since the debut and his opponent during Fight Night Auckland is certainly going to be a lore more challenging that Yusuke Kasuva.

Mizuto Hirota is a highly experienced fighter that has taken on some of the most illustrious names in the sport. Granted his record is littered with both wins and losses, it still shows that he has collected a lot of experience under his belt. While this fight is mostly evenly matched, the experience might really be the factor which makes the difference. Volkanovski is a pretty powerful hitter, but Hirota is no less and can also pack a punch himself. Hirota so far has landed takedowns with an accuracy of 68 per cent and you can rest assured that he will force Volkanovski to the mat once or twice.

Apart from the vast experience, another added advantage that Hirota can exploit is the fact that he has a significantly better reach which is 2 inches more that what Volkanovski has got. This can be used to deliver straight punches and setup takedowns while ensuring that Volkanovski is always on his back foot. If Volkanovski is going to win this one, he will have to stay real focused and pounce with a strong counter at the perfect moment.

Prediction – Hirota to win by unanimous decision

UFC Fight Night 110 – Dan Hooker Vs. Ross Pearson

Dan Hooker will be eager to clinch a victory in his home country in front of home support at UFC Fight Night 110 Auckland on June 10th. However, Ross Pearson may have a thing or two to say about that. If Hooker wants a home win, he will have to beat Pearson and that is […]

Dan Hooker will be eager to clinch a victory in his home country in front of home support at UFC Fight Night 110 Auckland on June 10th. However, Ross Pearson may have a thing or two to say about that. If Hooker wants a home win, he will have to beat Pearson and that is no walk in the park.

Hooker’s record has been anything but constant. He has had good times and bad alike in the Octagon. Coming to recent form, Hooker has been impressive and has only lost to Yair Rodriguez and Jason Knight. Rodriguez and Knight are fighters who are both exceptional and probably the best the featherweight division has seen in a very long time. However, Hooker isn’t fighting in the featherweight division anymore, he has bulked up to make an upward move to the lightweight division. The lightweight division is weight class which Pearson has been competing in for a very long time and hence has a ton of experience under his belt. Pearson relies mostly on his boxing skills and strikes relentlessly to knock out opponents while he also utilizes counter wrestling techniques to ward off any attempts made by opponents to take the fight to the floor.

When it comes to strikes absorbed per minutes, Pearson is statistically proven to be better than his opponent, Hooker. However, Hooker does have an advantage in terms of reach. Hooker is also quicker and more agile, but he has not been able to tap into his agility to really make it count so far.

All in all, this is a very well matched fight which really could swing either way. There is no concrete favorite as such.

Prediction – Fight to go to judges, Pearson to win by Unanimous Decision.

UFC Fight Night 210 – Patrick Cummins Vs. Jan Blachowicz

UFC Fight Night 210 is an event that is highly anticipated thanks to the fight card and the fervor excitement just keeps growing with every passing day as we edge closer to the fight night which is now just around the corner.

One fight that has kind of been shadowed by the other more nig name match ups is Patrick Cummins vs. Jan Blachowicz. However, if you were to actually take a closer look at the fighters and the potential this fight has – you will realize it can actually turn out to be one of the most interesting and highly competitive fights of the night.

Cummins (8-4) did not really get the UFC career start that he was hoping to when he lost out to Daniel Cormier, but he made up for it quickly and really sent out a strong message when he bounced back with three straight back to back wins. However, his recent form has gone south again and he has suffered three knock out losses in his last four fights.

On the other end of the octagon, we have Blachowicz (19-6) who also started his UFC career of with a bang after knocking out Ilir Latifi with a well landed body kick. Just like Cummins, Blachowicz’ recent form has not been on point as he has suffered three losses of his last four, but by decision.

So who will be able to turn things around and get back to winning ways? Even though Cummins is at a 2 inch disadvantage, we is better on the ground and we think he will be able to muscle his way to a victory via unanimous decision.
