Cung Le vs. Rich Franklin Likely for UFC on FUEL 6 in Macau

As long as Cung Le is healthy enough to compete, the UFC will pair the middleweight striker against former champ Rich Franklin at UFC on FUEL 6, the promotion’s November 10th China debut at the CotaiArena in Macau. UFC president Dana White revealed the booking plan yesterday in Calgary. Both fighters are coming off of decision wins in recent fights, with Le shutting out Patrick Cote at UFC 148, and Franklin out-slugging Wanderlei Silva in the main event of UFC 147.

The Vietnamese-born Le came out of his last victory with a “pretty banged up [knee],” which is keeping him out of the gym for four-to-six weeks, but he’s expected to be ready by the November date. No word yet on if the fight would take place at middleweight or at a catchweight; Franklin hasn’t competed at 185 since April 2008.

Speaking of middleweights, Dana White also teased some “crazy shit” he’s planning for the middleweight division, which has some speculating about a 185-pound tournament. Those plans will be finalized and announced after the Hector Lombard vs. Tim Boetsch scrap this weekend at UFC 149, which will help solidify the UFC’s middleweight contender picture.

Aldo vs. Koch Featherweight Title Bout Re-Scheduled for UFC 153 in October

As you may recall, this weekend’s UFC 149 event was originally supposed to be headlined by the featherweight title fight between Jose Aldo and Erik Koch — until Aldo felt the cold hand of The Curse. The UFC has now confirmed that the bout has been re-scheduled for UFC 153, which will go down October 13th at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Aldo will be looking to make his fourth UFC title defense, following his knockout of Chad Mendes at UFC 142 in January.

Though both fighters are now coming off of injury layoffs, Koch’s return to action at UFC 153 will mark the end of a 13-month hiatus — an eternity in fighter-time. And now he’ll be challenging Aldo in the hippo-infested waters of the HSBC, instead of the neutral grounds of Calgary. Yikes. Just do your best, Erik.

At this point, UFC 153 is also expected to feature Glover Teixeira vs. Quinton Jackson, Jussier da Silva vs. Ulysses Gomez, Cristiano Marcello vs. Reza Madadi, and the return of TUF Brazil winners Cezar “Mutante” Ferreira and Rony “Jason” Mariano Bezerra.

Coming off his split-decision loss to Johny Hendricks in May, welterweight contender Josh Koscheck will try to bounce back against Jake Ellenberger in the co-main event of UFC 151: Jones vs. Henderson, September 1st in Las Vegas. Ellenberger is also coming off a defeat — his leave-from-ahead* knockout loss to Martin Kampmann at the TUF 15 Finale — which followed a six-fight win streak, including victories over Jake Shields and Diego Sanchez. So which top 170-pounder is going to wake up the next morning with two straight losses?

– TUF 12 finalist Michael Johnson — who most recently gave TUF 13 winner Tony Ferguson his first loss in the UFC — will face Danny “Last Call” Castillo, who’s riding a three-fight win streak in the Octagon.

– Dennis Siver and Eddie Yagin have signed for a meeting in the featherweight division. Siver won a unanimous decision over Diego Nunes in his 145-pound debut in April, while Yagin is coming off of his massive upset of Mark Hominick at UFC 145.

– Takeya Mizugaki and Jeff Hougland will try to rebound from their recent losses (and improve their .500 UFC records) in a bantamweight contest.

– A lightweight bout between Dennis Hallman and Thiago Tavares has been moved to this card from UFC 150.

* The opposite of “come-from-behind,” obviously. But yeah, we need a better phrase for that.

Cowboy Justice: Donald Cerrone to Throw Down With Ex-Teammate Melvin Guillard @ UFC 150

The UFC has confirmed that the co-main event for UFC 150: Henderson vs. Edgar 2 (August 11th; Pepsi Center; Denver, CO) will be a pretty damn promising lightweight battle between Colorado native Donald Cerrone and Melvin Guillard. Both fighters are coming off of decision wins — Cerrone with his three-round thrashing of Jeremy Stephens at UFC on FUEL 3 in May, and Guillard with his recent win against Fabricio Cameoes at UFC 148.

Not only is the matchup compelling from an entertainment standpoint, there’s also a bit of backstory considering that the two men were longtime teammates under Greg Jackson, until Guillard jumped ship at the beginning of this year to train with the Blackzilians in Florida. (Here’s a photo of Melvin pretending to be Bigfoot Silva’s shadow.) After the fight was announced, Guillard referred to himself and Cerrone as “best friends,” while Donald simply described their relationship as “cool.” I mean, obviously Cowboy already has a best friend.

Cerrone originally wanted Anthony Pettis as a dance partner at UFC 150, but is just happy that somebody stepped up to fight him in his home state. Official CagePotato Prediction: Cerrone defeats Guillard by second-round submission, picks up the SOTN bonus, then takes like 10-12 chicks out on a pontoon boat. After telling the UFC to kiss his ass in March, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will serve out the final fight on his contract at UFC 153 (October 13th, Rio de Janeiro), according to new reports. No, he will not get a chance to settle an old grudge with Mauricio Rua or Forrest Griffin like he wanted to. In classic “lose-lose” booking, Jackson’s farewell UFC performance will come against Glover Teixeira, arguably the most dangerous light-heavyweight that only hardcore fans know about. And that’s what happens when you talk shit about your employers, kids.

Jackson, who has dropped his last two bouts against Jon Jones and Ryan Bader, was originally slated to face Shogun for his walk-away fight, but a double-knee surgery immediately scrapped those plans. Then, Glover Teixeira arrived in the UFC in May, destroyed Ms. Kyle Kingsbury, and was allegedly ducked by Rua. Is Rampage taking this fight just to prove he’s more alpha than Shogun? Either way, it’s a dangerous matchup for the former champ, especially coming off major knee repair. Anybody think he can pull it off?

Kenny Robertson to Replace Jon Fitch Against Aaron Simpson at UFC on FUEL 4 [UPDATED]

Sources close to Kenny Robertson (11-1, 0-1 UFC) have informed CagePotato.com that the Illinois-based welterweight has been offered a fight against Aaron Simpson, in the wake of Jon Fitch’s knee-injury withdrawal. The meeting will take place at UFC on FUEL TV 4, July 11th in San Jose.

Robertson kicked off his MMA career on a 10-0 tear, with nine wins by stoppage. After his Octagon debut at UFC 126 in February 2011 resulted in a TKO loss to Mike Pierce, Robertson was released from the promotion in order to alleviate crowding in the UFC’s roster, and had a difficult time finding opponents. He eventually traveled to Finland for his next (and most recent) fight, where he knocked out Lucio Linhares with a rather amazing spinning backfist at Fight Festival 31 last October.

Robertson didn’t deserve to be cut by the UFC in the first place, and it would be great to see this talented fight-finisher get another shot. We’ll update this post if/when the Simpson vs. Robertson bout is confirmed.
