The MMA world is still debating and dissecting Sunday’s UFC Fight Night 81 main event between Dominick Cruz and TJ Dillashaw from Boston, a hotly contested and close fight that Cruz ultimately won by split decision to regain the belt he never lost in dramatic style.

Many insist that Cruz used his elusiveness to make the champion miss and land as many strikes as the pressuring Dillashaw did while maintaining a clear edge in the wrestling game, while others fervently believe that ‘The Viper’ did more than enough to win by constantly staying in Cruz’ face throughout the close fight.

Today Dillashaw took to Instagram to give his true thoughts on the fight after re-watching it, first proclaiming that it was not a robbery and the burden was on him for making it that close.

But with that said, Dillashaw then seemed to contradict himself by insisting that he won four rounds to one (which one judge somehow gave him), which would suggest it was a robbery. He also blasted Octagon commentator Joe Rogan for supposedly being biased towards Cruz during the fight.

Hop to the following page to find out what the understandably angry former champion had to say…

With a blockbuster free card on FOX Sports 1, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) kept their momentum rolling early this year with last night’s UFC Fight Night 81 from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.

The card featured the long-awaited return of former bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz, who returned from a multi-year injury layoff to win a split decision over TJ Dillashaw in an emotional reclamation of the title he never actually lost. The riveting main event was obviously the highlight of the East Coast show, yet there were some other fighters who definitely deserve their own recognition for playing a part in the memorable card.

Let’s take a look at the five biggest takeaways from UFC Fight Night 81:

It was a tough night for Matt Mitrione in Boston, but the picture he just posted to Twitter has even more bad news for the UFC heavyweight…

UFC heavyweight Matt Mitrione was hoping to test the waters of free agency with a victory over Travis Browne at UFC Fight Night 81, but it didn’t quite work out that way. After a tough few rounds with ‘Hapa,”Meathead’ eventually succumbed to strikes in the final stanza. Officially a TKO, Mitrione suffered a hard loss at the worst time possible. But it wasn’t that cut and dry for everyone.

Two eye pokes from Browne throughout the fight have sparked debate in the time since, and a grizzly replay of the moments after the fight show the harrowing injury that Mitrione suffered to his eye. Was this a punch or poke?

Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones may have joked about the fouls during the fight, but to ‘Meathead’ this is no laughing matter whatsoever. He also suffered a shoulder injury, meaning he could have trouble finding work regardless of where he decides to fight next.

Taking to Twitter, Mitrione not only revealed the extent of the injury to his eye, but also blames the eye pokes for his loss to Browne:

Ouch, who would have thought that nasty swollen eye could have got any worse?

So what are your thoughts on this brutal TKO at UFC Fight Night 81? Did Mitrione suffer a controversial loss, or were the eye pokes just a precursor to the inevitable ending? Many fighters have been subject to similar debates in the past, and not much has been done to combat the eye pokes in MMA to this day.

A devastating contract-ending TKO loss after two eyepokes wasn’t the only thing that Travis Browne left Matt Mitrione at UFC Boston last night…

Heavyweight Matt Mitrione was looking for a big win as his contract expired against Travis Browne on the main card of last night’s (January 17, 2016) UFC Fight Night 81 from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, but instead he got something quite a bit more undesirable.

Appearing to control the earlygoing with his quick hands and footwork, a brutal eyepoke from Browne’s pinkie finger caused a temporary halt to the bout to let ‘Meathead’ recover. He did, but a second and worse eyepoke, this time from Browne’s thumb, caused another break as Mitrione’s right eye appeared to be visibly affected and swollen despite no point being taken from Browne.

Browne seemed to capitalize from that point on, nailing a slowing Mitrione with a huge shot on his eye before picking him up in a huge slam to open the floodgates for a barrage of ground and pound that eventually earned ‘Hapa’ a TKO win. But that wasn’t all that Mitrione came out of the bout with, as he suffered a strange injury that immediately had the Internet abuzz.

Returning from nearly four years of painstaking injury recoveries, former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz made a triumphant return against then-current champion TJ Dillashaw in the main event of last night’s (January 17, 2016) UFC Fight Night 81 from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, winning back his belt in possibly the most riveting and emotional scene the Octagon has ever seen.

The main event bout was a close, back-and-forth affair that was tough to score and all over the place on the judges’ scorecards. Cruz used his trademark elusiveness to slip out of the way of Dillashaw’s strikes, and he also became the first man to take ‘The Viper’ down in the UFC with several successful attempts. The first announced score was 48-47 for Cruz, then a somewhat surprising 49-46 for Dillashaw, and when the final score was announced 49-46, it would have seemed the former champ had retained his title.

But Octagon announcer Bruce Buffer announced the result as “And New,” capping Cruz’ long-awaited return off with an emphatic reclamation of the title he never lost. The UFC will now hold their breath as it appeared Cruz badly hurt his foot late in the fight, but for now, check out the highlights of his emotional, title-sealing win right here:
