UFC welterweight contender Matt Brown faced off against Demian Maia at UFC 198 last night (Saturday May 14, 2016) in a bout that would ending going the way of the Brazilian grappler. Maia put on a dominant performance, staking his claim for a shot at the welterweight title by dismantling Brown, eventually winning by rear naked choke submission in round three. The home crowd went nuts when Maia sunk in that fight ending choke, but there’s a lot more to the tale of the crowd’s reaction.

Demian Maia vs. Matt Brown

You might remember that ‘The Immortal’ did himself no favors with the Brazilian crowds at the UFC 198 weigh-ins, turning his back on the some 15,000 spectators and flipping them off in a crazy moment caught on film.

That’s what started Brown’s beef with the Brazilian fans at UFC 198, but they took it way too far on fight night. The video you are about to watch shows Matt Brown’s UFC 198 walkout. From the moment he hits the aisle to get down to the octagon, fans can be seen shouting, swearing, spitting flipping Brown off, and then things get a little crazy. Driven by the events at the UFC 198 weigh-ins, fans start to put hands on ‘The Immortal.’ He is slapped, has his head pulled around and even punched, until he’s had enough, retaliating with a punch of his own before the security swarms in.

Watch the video of this disgraceful moment:
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen fans attack a fighter on the way to the octagon, as it famously happened to Chael Sonnen, also in Brazil. What should be done about this? Perhaps wider aisles would be a good idea to start with.

Reports indicate that multiple fans were ejected from the event following the attacks on Brown, and it’s actually quite sad that his focus may have been impaired before having even stepped in the octagon at UFC 198.

Demian Maia Will Face Jake Shields in Own ‘Back Yard’

(Photo by Donald Miralle/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

Well, this is kinda cool. In today’s MMA career symmetry news, MMA Fighting speaks with UFC welterweight contender Demian Maia about returning to the arena where he first made a name for himself in MMA.

“Maia became famous in the MMA world on Oct. 7, 2006, when he dominated three opponents in one night to win the Super Challenge middleweight tournament. The event took place at Jose Correa Gymnasium, the same arena that will host UFN 29,” where Maia will fight Jake Shields, they report.

The Super Challenge middleweight tournament had names like Gustavo Machado, Fabio Nascimento, Alexandre Ferreira, Katel Kubis and Leonardo Nascimento involved. In the end, the underdog prevailed for the title.

“I thought ‘okay, let’s see what happens,'” said Maia. “Paulo Vasconcelos was the promoter and he invited me to fight. I said ‘I don’t know, give me a submission or jiu-jitsu fight, but he couldn’t find an opponent to fight me. Josuel Distak, who was one of my coaches at that time, said I’d win the tournament, so I basically was thrown in there by them.”

“I lived in Barueri for a long time, and now I live in a city close to Barueri, so it’s like my backyard. Three years ago, we never imagined that the UFC would return to Brazil again. I expected to end my career fighting only outside of Brazil, and now I have the chance to fight at home.”

A year after winning that tournament in Brazil, the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt was fighting in the UFC as a middleweight. Maia worked all the way to a 2010 title shot against Anderson Silva.

After losing a decision to now champion, Chris Weidman, Maia moved down to the welterweight division, where he is undefeated. Maia is not a star on the level of Vitor Belfort or Silva but it will be interesting to see the reception he gets from his home town crowd against Shields.

If Maia gets past the former welterweight title challenger, it will also be interesting to see if he finds himself on a short list of 170 pound contenders. The winner of Maia/Shields against the winner of Rory MacDonald/Robbie Lawler, anyone?

Twit Pics of the Week: Candid Shots of Arianny Celeste and Chandella Powell in Brazil

Here are some great shots that were tweeted out this week with Arianny Celeste and Chandella Powell working out and learning Samba while in Brazil for UFC 142.

*Note: that last picture just makes it feel like our USA grade a** has got nothing on the Brazilians. Didn’t you think Chandella had a booty? I don’t even think Brittney Palmer could compete with that. What the hell do they eat there in Brazil? Does Samba do that to your a**? I’m not sure I want to learn that dance.

UFC Planning Four or Five Events and a Season of TUF in Brazil for 2012

(“Can you believe I used to wear boxers this big?”)

It looks like the UFC’s return to Brazil in August was a fruitful one for Zuffa as Tatame is reporting that reps from the Las Vegas-based promotion are in the South American country working on a deal that could see a season of The Ultimate Fighter filmed in Sao Paulo  as well as up to five events in the region in 2012. The group met with the mayor of the city, Gilberto Kassab, yesterday afternoon and today are meeting with the governor Geraldo Alckmin.

UFC chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta told the Brazilian combat sport magazine earlier this summer while in Rio for UFC 134 that he was pleasantly surprised with the amount of support they got in the birthplace of the sport and that they were looking at bringing the Octagon back as many as five times next year.

“We underestimated how popular it was here. If we could do it again, we would do it in a big soccer stadium, you know? But when we put the tickets on sale, we really didn’t know. But it’s been amazing the amount of support, it’s unbelievable,” he explained. “We’re working on [bringing TUF here]; we’re really close to get something done. We think it’s gonna be very successful – a Brazilian Ultimate Fighter, all Brazilian fighters. One thing that is great about this country is that you have so many great fighters, finding talents is easy. There are some many good kids”.

The report goes on to state that Cicero Pompeu de Toledo stadium, which is the home of Sao Paulo’s soccer team and has a capacity of 70,000 not including floor seats, is a possible venue for the UFC’s next Brazilian event. The stadium has played host to musical acts like Paul McCartney, U2, Iron Maiden, Shakira, Madonna and Michael Jackson — the last of whom attracted over 100,000 fans to a show in 1993. If an event is held there, there’s a good chance that the UFC’s previous attendance record of 55,000 set in Toronto at UFC 129 in April would likely be shattered.

Fertitta said that they are also eyeing UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo’s hometown of Manaus as another possible site for a future show.

“We’ve met with the governor of Manaus and they want us to do a fight there. It’s interesting for us, because Jose Aldo is from there, so it’s maybe an opportunity to bring him back to fight in front of his home town”, Fertitta said.

Royce Gracie Says He’s in Talks to Fight at UFC Rio, But Sources Say It’s Unlikely He’ll Be On the Card

("I also want a twenty percent senior’s discount on all UFC merchandise and a scooter to get me to the Octagon.")

When the UFC announced it would be holding a press conference in Brazil to announce that the promotion would be returning to the South American birthplace of modern MMA to hold its first event since Ultimate Brazil on October 16, 1998, many were surprised to see UFC 1, 2 and 4 tournament champ Royce Gracie included in the festivities.

The fact that Royce was prominently positioned on the dais between fellow Brazilian MMA luminaries Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Anderson Silva, Vitor Belfort and Jose Aldo didn’t rais any eyebrows,  considering Gracie’s UFC Hall of membership and his family’s history with the promotion. It was the fact that the 44-year-old, who hasn’t competed since testing positive for steroids after his K-1 Dynamite!! USA bout with Kazushi Sakuraba in June 2007 revealed that he was interested in competing on the "UFC Rio" card.

In an interview he did with Sherdog yesterday, Gracie said that he is negotiating with the UFC to be included on the card, which will likely be at least half filled with Brazilian fighters.

According to Fighters Only who spoke to a source close to the situation, "it’s unlikely" that Gracie will be included on the card, but "anything is possible possible."
