LowKick MMA will be bringing you UFC Fight Island 8: Chiesa vs. Magny results throughout the afternoon (Wed. 20th. January 2021) from the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Taking main event status on short-notice in what could prove to be a pivotal welterweight clash, The Ultimate Fighter 15 victor, Michael ‘The Maverick’ Chiesa meets with 170-pound mainstay, ‘The Haitian Sensation’ Neil Magny, with both hoping to earn a matchup against a top-five contender next, as they offer up three-fight win streaks, respectively.

Making his Octagon return for the first time in a year, submission threat, Chiesa has been flawless since his move to welterweight, besting former WEC and interim UFC welterweight champion, Carlos Condit, and one-time lightweight title chaser, Diego Sanchez to kickstart a two-fight rise. Co-headlining UFC Fight Night Raleigh last January, Chiesa defeated former 155-pound gold holder, Rafael dos Anjos via a unanimous decision.

Elevation Fight Team staple, Magny has himself witnessed a purple-patch of late. Amassing three wins on the trot, the Brooklyn native has taken three consecutive unanimous decision wins over Li Jingliang, Anthony Rocco Martin, and an August victory over former welterweight kingpin, ‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler.

A pair of 170-pound talents also feature in the co-main event as The Ultimate Fighter 3: Brazil victor, Warlley Alves meets with Tunisian striker, Mounir ‘The Sniper’ Lazzez.

Hoping to rebound to the winner’s enclosure, Alves battled opposite Randy Brown at UFC Fight Night Sao Paulo in November 2019, and makes his Octagon return off the back of a second-round triangle loss.

10-1 as a professional, Lazzez made his promotional bow at UFC Fight Island 1 in July, featuring against renowned knockout-ace Abdul Razak Alhassan, picking up a unanimous judging win over the power-puncher over three-rounds.

Former UFC featherweight champion, Max ‘Blessed’ Holloway is back in the winner’s enclosure — possibly eclipsing his incredible 2018 outing against Brian ‘T-City’ Ortega to boot, snapping a two-fight rise of the number-six ranked Calvin Kattar in a five-round battering.

Blasting out the gate early, Holloway looked incredibly sharp with his hands in the early exchanges of the opening round. Landing a couple of nasty calf kicks, Kattar stifled some of the Hawaiian’s early pressure, sticking well behind his jab as the latter pushing forward as his customary. Landing a couple of decent spinning back-kicks to the midsection before the first round buzzer, Holloway’s sheer activity won him the opening frame.

In an absolutely massive round for the former champion, Holloway split Kattar’s guard with a massive, slicing elbow on two separate occasions, drawing a sizeable cut on the forehead of the Matheun native. Almost scoring a similar buzzing beating high-kick knockdown, Holloway clipped Kattar behind the ear to close the second frame.

Having some better moments in the third round, Kattar landed well with that straight right on occasion, however, it was just more of the same from the onset from Holloway — scoring a series of lengthy combinations with aplomb with some of the best volume striking of his career.

In what’s sure to hold up as a Round of the Year contender, Holloway and Kattar bit down on their respective mouthpieces at the fence, swinging wild hooks and elbows for the majority of the fourth round. Holloway settled the pace in the first of two championship rounds towards the end, taking yet another frame in this one.

Taking the final round as well in one of the best displays in his carer, Holloway took home a unanimous decision win — even landing some incredible ‘no-look’ strikes on Kattar in the final minutes of the round. With Alexander Volkanovski vs. Brian Ortega slated for UFC 260 in late March — Holloway should most definitely face the victor.

Below, check out the highlights from Holloway’s blitzing of Kattar over five-rounds.

In late September, former three-time Bellator lightweight best, Michael Chandler ended his ten-year, gold-laden stay with the promotion – penning a multi-fight deal with rival organization, the UFC

While the Sanford MMA staple has yet to be booked for his promotional debut, UFC president, Dana White has recently insisted that there is not a rush to get the Missouri native booked for his first Octagon outing.

Chandler, 34, travelled to ‘Fight Island’ in Abu Dhabi, UAE in October, making championship weight as a possible backup to the as scheduled lightweight title unification clash between Khabib ‘The Eagle’ Nurmagomedov, and then interim titleholder, Justin ‘The Highlight’ Gaethje. With his services deemed unrequired, Chandler switched his attentions, and openly voiced his willingness to clash with another former interim gold holder, Tony ‘El Cucuy’ Ferguson.

The decorated amateur wrestler, along with Ferguson openly discussed and called for the potential pairing, with the above-mentioned White holding no qualms regarding that possible clash.

A would-be matchup ultimately hit a snag a number of weeks ago, however, with Chandler detailing how he was eager to meet with Ferguson on January 23 – in the co-main event of UFC 257 beneath a lightweight re-run between former titleholders, Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier, and ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor.

With Ferguson keen on a December 12 UFC 256 outing instead, the promotion eventually looked to the streaking grappling ace, Charles ‘Do Bronx’ Oliveira, who now clashes with the Oxnard native in a couple of weeks time.

Speaking with reporters gathered following UFC Vegas 15 on Saturday, White touched on the topic of Chandler’s possible debut, pointing to a need for his body to recover following the recent weight-cut, before hinting as a potential outing for the latter at an upcoming ‘Fight Island’ event.

The problem with Michael Chandler right not is he stepped up for that [Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Justin Gaethje] fight and he cut weight, so he can’t turn around as fast as these other guys can right now,” White said. “We can’t do that to him. So, no hurry, take his time, get his body back together. We’ll get him something soon.

Once we go back to Abu Dhabi (UAE), there’s going to be a lot of big fights coming up here, so he’ll be a part of something.

It would seem that Chandler has his lightweight debut options limited to the feature recent, Gaethje, or New Zealand striker, Dan ‘The Hangman’ Hooker, with the 34-year-old also claiming he started preparations for his debut outing, last week.
