Tyson Pedro didn’t let the chance to compete inside the Octagon get the better of him Saturday night.

Instead, Pedro rose to the occasion, besting Khalil Rountree via submission at UFC Fight Night 101.

“Awesome to get a win after three weeks notice,” Pedro told UFC.com after. “I am pumped. So happy. I was going to try and stand with him, but then my game plan went out the window when I messed up my footwork.

“But then I came back and I did what I love to do and I made him pay for it with my jiu-jitsu.”

Pedro, a native of Australia, improved to 5-0 with the win. Four of his five victories have been submission finishes.

The fourth bout on the main card of UFC Fight Night 101 featured a welterweight contest between Omari Akhmedov (16-4) and Kyle Noke (22-10-1). Both fighters looked to avoid their third straight defeat.

It was a rough night for Noke in Melbourne as Akhmedov delivered a bruising for most of the fight.

The two fighters exchanged body kicks. An overhand right connected for Akhmedov. He swarmed his opponent and took him to the ground. An elbow from “Wolverine” found the target. Blood trickled down the face of Noke thanks to a hard punch. “KO” was in search of a triangle choke, but couldn’t get it. Akhmedov dropped some hard punches as the round ended.

A leg kick landed for Noke early in the second stanza. Noke grazed his opponent with a head kick. Akhmedov shot in and dumped Noke down. The action stalled and both fighters were forced to stand back up. An inside leg kick landed for Noke. A left hook found the mark for “Wolverine.” A straight right counter landed for Akhmedov. The round ended and it was clear Akhmedov was ahead.

The two men touched gloves as the final round began. Noke went for a front kick, but missed. “KO” kept landing leg kicks, but no significant damage was done. He ducked under a counter right hand. Akhmedov caught a kick and threw a combination that was blocked. Noke’s corner yelled at him to pressure “Wolverine” with under two minutes left in the fight. “KO” didn’t turn up his intensity despite being down in the fight. Akhmedov sealed the deal with a takedown and he remained in top control for most of the round.

To the surprise of no one, all three judges awarded the fight to Akhmedov.

Final Result: Omari Akhmedov def. Kyle Noke via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

The main card of UFC Fight Night 101 started with a strawweight tilt between Seo Hee Ham (16-8) and Danielle Taylor (8-2). “Dynamite” was victorious thanks to her counter punching

Ham moved close early and Taylor threw leather to create some space. Ham landed a right hand that backed her opponent up. Time was called due to an eye poke to Ham. The action resumed quickly and Ham kept trying to close the distance. “Dynamite” was hit with a left hand counter. An overhand right landed for Taylor. An overhand left landed for Ham and a knot formed on the head of Taylor. Ham followed it up with a straight left. “Dynamite” was on her toes trying to avoid anymore damage. She countered with a kick high. The round ended shortly after.

Taylor connected with a right hand immediately in the second stanza. A counter left landed for Ham. She kept pressing forward. Once again, Ham found a home for her counter left. “Dynamite” popped Ham with a right hand. Taylor landed a stinging body kick. It appeared Taylor got into a rhythm in this round. She shot in for a takedown, but Ham reversed and was in full mount as the round came to a close.

The final frame was underway and the two traded leather. Taylor landed a body shot. A couple of right hand found the mark for Taylor. Some swelling formed below the eye of Ham. “Dynamite” connected with a high kick. Despite getting clipped moving forward, Ham’s strategy didn’t change. Ham stopped and called for time, but the referee refused to acknowledge it. Despite getting hit numerous times, Ham kept trying to call for time. Replays showed there was an eye poke that was missed, but Ham’s decision to keep calling for time was baffling to say the least.

The fight went the distance and the judges’ scorecards were read. Taylor had done enough to take a split decision win.

Final Result: Danielle Taylor def. Seo Hee Ham via split decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27)

Former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold was scheduled to rematch ex-Strikeforce titleholder Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in the main event of tonight’s November 26, 2016) UFC Fight Night 101 from Melbourne, Australia, but he was forced to withdraw from the bout with a knee injury. Instead, rising middleweight contenders Derek Brunson and Robert Whittaker will do battle in the evening’s main event.

While Rockhold obviously wishes it was him fighting tonight, he did recently speak on the replacement bout with Bloody Elbow, saying that it’s an ‘interesting’ scrap:

“It’s an interesting fight,” he said. “Both guys are kind of climbing their way up, and one of them will be putting themselves up into that next range of contenders, that next level. They’ll be in the elite class. Whittaker seems to have a little sharper, a little better technique on the feet. Brunson is just such an athletic guy. He’s a pretty good striker and a good wrestler.”

While Rockhold was hesitant to make a prediction, he did say that both fighters have ‘holes’ in their games, although he will be paying close attention to who comes out on top:

“They’re both raw, though, and they both have holes in their game, but I think they match up well together, stylistically. It’s going to be a fun fight with plenty of back and forth action. I’m very curious to see who bumps up, to see who wants to come get it. I’d be hard pressed to pick a winner here, to be honest.”

Who are you picking tonight?
