Sorry “Magician,” maybe next time.

Bantamweights Jimmie Rivera (20-1) and Bryan Caraway were set to go toe-to-toe at next Sunday night’s (Jan. 15) UFC Fight Night event in Phoenix, Arizona. Those plans were scrapped when Caraway went down with an injury. John Dodson offered to replace Caraway and meet “El Terror” inside the Octagon.

That fight is going to have to wait if it ever materializes.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has announced that Marlon Vera (8-3-1) will step up to face Rivera inside the Talking Stick Arena. Vera competed on The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America. “Chito’s” professional record inside the Octagon sits at 2-2.

Rivera hasn’t lost since his second professional bout and is on a 19-fight winning streak. He is the No. 8 ranked bantamweight in the world. He’s coming off a unanimous decision victory of the now retired mixed martial arts (MMA) icon Urijah Faber at UFC 203.

The main card of the Phoenix event will begin at 10 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1. Rivera vs. Vera is expected to open the main card.

Joe Lauzon Won’t Retire Until He’s ‘Not Interested’ in Training

Veteran Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight Joe Lauzon doesn’t exactly have one foot out the door. Despite having 38 fights in his professional career, “J-Lau” doesn’t appear to be slowing down. He will step inside the Octagon next Sunday night (Jan. 15) to take on former Bellator contender Marcin Held.

Lauzon was a recent guest on MMAJunkie Radio. He said he is prepared to avoid Held’s bread and butter, the leg locks:

“The smart plan is to stay away from the leglock stuff. Don’t play with fire more than you need to. Defend the leg locks and get away. But if we find ourselves in a perfect situation, I think it would pretty awesome to submit this guy.”

With so many fights under his belt, one can only imagine the amount of wear and tear Lauzon’s body has endured. The 155-pounder admitted there are times he feels spent.

“It depends on the day. Most days, I feel awesome. Every once in a while, especially during fight camp, I’ll wake up and be like, ‘Oh my god, what is going on?’ I feel like I’ve been in a car accident or something. Nothing major, but just sore stuff. Sore hands, sore knees, (and a) sore neck. But most days I feel great.”

Lauzon has gone 2-3 in his last five bouts, but he has shown he still has mileage. “J-Lau” isn’t prepared to call it a career until he loses interest in training.

“I think it’s going to come down to, when am I not interested in going to the gym anymore – not interested in training anymore. But right now, I love getting into the gym.”

Lauzon vs. Held will be the co-main event of the UFC Fight Night event in Phoenix, Arizona. The main card will begin at 10 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is currently searching for Jimmie Rivera’s replacement opponent. “El Terror” was supposed to face Bryan Caraway at a UFC Fight Night event in Phoenix next Sunday (Jan. 15). Caraway pulled out with an injury.

The movers and shakers at the world leader in mixed martial arts (MMA) may not have to look much further. Former flyweight contender John Dodson took to Twitter to throw his name in the hat of potential replacements.

See it for yourself:

“The Magician” was one of the most feared strikers in the 125-pound division. He knocked out three opponents is his five wins as a flyweight inside the Octagon. Prior, he won The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season 14 bantamweight tournament when he knocked out T.J. Dillashaw. Of course, Dillashaw ended up being the UFC 135-pound title holder.

In his first bout back at bantamweight, Dodson starched Manvel Gamburyan in 47 seconds. He then met John Lineker in a back-and-fourth thriller that saw his opponent edge it out. Dodson may be 1-2 in his last three bouts, but he always looks to put on a show and he’s usually in the fight at all times.

Should he step up to meet Rivera, it’ll be no picnic. The Team Tiger Schulmann bruiser hasn’t lost since his second bout back in Nov. 2008. That loss was a split decision. Rivera turned some heads when he knocked out Marcus Brimage in the first round in his UFC debut.

Decision wins over Pedro Munhoz and Iuri Alcantara earned him a bout with former World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) featherweight king Urijah Faber. “El Terror” pulled of the biggest win of his career, outworking “The California Kid” to a unanimous decision.

As of this writing, nothing has been made official, so stick with MMANews.com for more details on Rivera’s replacement opponent as they become available.

John Moraga: ‘I’m Fighting For my Life’ Against Sergio Pettis

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) flyweight John Moraga may be stepping inside the Octagon for the last time on Jan. 15. Doing battle with him in Phoenix will be Sergio Pettis. When Moraga throws leather with his opponent, he will be doing so in his hometown.

Moraga appeared on MMAJunkie Radio to discuss the bout. The 125-pounder was honest, to say the least, and admitted a loss could mean a pink slip from the UFC brass:

“This is real to me, I came from the streets. I did this to make a better living and provide for my kids. And I’m barely at the point where I really feel like I can get a win or a couple of wins and actually start making some money that – show myself that I made a career out of this. You know, there’s nothing left for me. If I get cut from the UFC, there ain’t nothing else really in fighting for me, so I’m fighting for my life right here. This is everything. I’m all in. I’m all in on this one.”

Moraga has a reason to take a potential release seriously. A loss next Sunday would put him on a three-fight skid. It’s easy to see other mixed martial arts (MMA) promotions welcoming Moraga if he were cut, but he doesn’t feel the money is there with other organizations.

“I don’t think anybody else is paying the money that we should be paid to go through what we go through. I don’t do this to be on posters or interviews or fame, anything like that. I’m here to provide for my family and that’s it. I don’t know what else there would be for me, so I’m going to make this happen.”

Moraga vs. Pettis will headline the FOX Sports 1 portion of the prelims.
