The UFC has announced that two fights on the non-televised portion of Saturday night’s Fight for the Troops event will be streamed live on the promotion’s official Facebook page.
“I’m always looking for ways to give fans fights for free and this is just another example of that,” UFC President Dana White said in a statement. “Facebook is such a great tool for people to stay connected and we’re excited to put two live fights on our UFC page for free.”
The UFC, more than any other sports league, has used social networking to connect to fans. So from that perspective, it’s easy to see why they’d do this Facebook deal. But the deal still seems a little weird.

Not to get sidetracked by the psychology of it all, but clearly a certain amount of success in athletics must be based on not thinking about it too much. Hence, the stunning percentage of dumb guys who are also professional athletes. Now, we’re not trying to say that Cody McKenzie is dumb, per se, only that he sure doesn’t appear to over think things. In fact, perhaps that blind confidence – coupled with a freaky guillotine — is his greatest strength as a fighter. There’s something about McKenzie’s particular blend of boundless enthusiasm and wanton hubris that we find incredibly endearing. His surprising run on “TUF 12,” during which he performed the MMA equivalent of continually poking a sleeping grizzly bear with a stick by talking an endless stream of shit to Josh Koscheck, was enough to win our hearts. His choke-out of Aaron Wilkinson at the show’s live finale? Well, that was just hilarious.
From the outside looking in, it appears the UFC may be just as bemused by McKenzie as we are, perhaps vowing to just keep giving him fights in rapid succession until somebody beats him. That – paired with the fact the kid just doesn’t seem know any better – would explain why the company is moving him straight from his victory over Wilkinson earlier this month into a short-notice fight with Yves Edwards on Jan. 22. It would also explain why he’s prone to say stuff like this: “I’d love to be able to cut down to 145 and fight (Jose) Aldo,” McKenzie told MMA Junkie this week. “I respect the guy, but I think that would be a war.”

After making quick work of Aaron Wilkinson in his UFC debut on Saturday, Cody McKenzie won’t waste any time getting back in the cage.
The cast member of Season 12 of “The Ultimate Fighter” will step in to face Yves Edwards at the UFC’s Fight for the Troops event at Fort Hood, Texas, on Jan. 22. He’ll take the place of Melvin Guillard, who now moves up to fight Evan Dunham after Kenny Florian was forced to withdraw with an injury. The McKenzie news was first reported by MMA Junkie, and MMA Fighting has confirmed the lightweight’s participation in the fight with sources close to his camp.

With the WEC/UFC merger in place, former UFC Lightweight, George Roop is back in the promotion fighting at the 145 division. Roop who is coming off a KO of the Night win over Chan Sung Jung with a high kick at WEC 51 that some are saying is a Knock Out of the Year contender, has agreed to fight Team Tompkins teammate Mark Hominick at UFC Fight Night 23: Fight for the Troops 2 on January 22nd.
MMAFix asked George Roop why he decided to fight his teammate, Hominick, and though he says, “nobody likes fighting a friend or teammate; hey this is the business,” Roop also adds that the winner of this fight should be the next contender at the Featherweight title. He admits “The Coach” Shawn Tompkins was not happy about the match up. But Roop has been fighting since 2006 and understands this is a necessary step toward becoming the Featherweight Champion, as is his ultimate goal. Because both Roop and Hominick can obviously not train together for this bout, Roop plans to primarily train atApex MMA in his hometown of Tucson, Arizona.
George Roop also notes that since news has broken about his match up with Hominick that forums are already flooded with comments that he is sure to lose this fight. Roop’s response to the forum critics: “Well, of course he’s gonna beat me, just like Leonard Garcia and just like Jung. I’m good at playing the underdog.”
Heavyweights Matt Mitrione and Tim Hague are expected to meet on the UFC’s yet-to-be-announced Jan. 22 card.
Sources close to the fight confirmed the news to MMA Fighting on Sunday, saying both fighters have agreed to the matchup and have signed bout agreements.
