Frank Mir Claims Fedor Emelianenko Wouldn’t Have Fared Well In The UFC

frank-mir

Frank Mir, who fights Mark Hunt in the main event of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 85 event in Brisbane, Australia, recently shared his thoughts on the old feeling from the MMA community that PRIDE always had better heavyweight fighters than the UFC.

Mir appeared as a guest on MMAJunkie.com Radio and shared his belief that the PRIDE fighters being better than UFC fighters debate was nothing more than a myth.

“I was told constantly if these three guys came over to the UFC, they’re going to clean house. It’s going to be the PRIDE show in the UFC. The three big names from the PRIDE heavyweights that I had to hear about in the early 2000s were obviously Fedor (and) Nogueira – and I heard Nogueira directed specifically toward me because I’m the American version and he’s the better version. I’m the cheap version of Nogueira. I’m the knock-off. Then you have Mirko ‘Cro-Cop.'”

Mir went on to explain that despite never competing in the UFC, Fedor’s talent didn’t translate well when he fought on the American circuit as well.

“Everyone came over but Fedor. Fedor came over to an American show, but just not the UFC. He didn’t fare any better. He lost to (Antonio) ‘Bigfoot’ Silva, who smashed him. I have a win over ‘Bigfoot.’ I think that kind of settles that argument of what he would have done in the heavyweight division here in the UFC.”

The guy asked what kind of shape Mark Hunt was in, Hunt’s reaction is priceless…

Former K-1 world grand prix champion, Pride FC veteran and current UFC heavyweight contender Mark Hunt is perhaps the most likeable character in modern mixed martial arts. ‘The Super Samoan’ doesn’t just have a fan friendly style with his one punch walk off knockouts, he’s also one of the humblest men you’ll ever come across in the fight game. He meets former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir at this weekend’s stacked UFC Fight Night 85 card, and does so in front of a crowd that will be heavily on the New Zealander’s side.

In Mir, Hunt faces an accomplished and highly dangerous grappler who can also strike with significant knockout power, but the one shot ability of ‘The Super Samoan’ has seen him create highlight reels of many dangerous men over the years. One question that is ever hovering when Hunt is concerned is the shape he’s in. Against Stipe Miocic and Fabricio Werdum we saw the popular kickboxer go down in horrific losses, these defeats also displayed possibly the worst shape the heavyweight striker has appeared in during his UFC run.

Hunt vs. Silva

Over the recent months we’ve seen numerous pictures of Hunt training in Thailand with the likes of John Wayne Parr, and his physique, although covered by tees and vests, has looked far more trim and muscular. Now, during an interview with our good friends down under Submission Radio, ‘The Super Samoan’ finally reveals what shape he’s in for tomorrow’s (Saturday March 19) bout against Frank Mir. Check it out, the stripping begins at around the 4:00 mark:

Frank Mir is set to fight Mark Hunt at UFC Fight Night 85 in a heavyweight bout and recently spoke with FOX Sports about the upcoming fight. Mir explained that his game plan coming into this fight is to take it to the ground and wear him down. While Mir is known for his striking, Mir is best known for his grappling and submissions, which is what he plans to do in this fight.

“The differences that he has over me in striking, I feel like on the ground, grappling wise, the gap is really great,” Mir said. “Obviously if this was a K-1 fight, Mark has been doing it for many more years than I have as far as pure stand up, so you’d have to give him the advantage.

“I think part of my strategy in the fight is that he really has to worry about the takedowns and the only way he’s going to worry about it is if I take him to the ground early in the fight a couple of times. Even if he survives, it’s not a loss because now he can’t put 100 percent of his mind into striking because he knows I can get him down.”

Mir believes that Hunt will survive the first few rounds, but will cave and tap out in their main event fight.

“He might survive the first time, he might even survive the second time. But on a long enough scale, you’re going to get submitted by me,” Mir said.

“He obviously knows I’d like to submit him, and I’m sure Mark wants to stay away from the submissions. So he’s going to try to fight where he’s most comfortable at.”

Mir backtracked and said that while he believes Hunt will last a few rounds with him, he has the mindset of going in and trying to finish the fight quickly.

“I’m really trying to go in there and finish in the first or second round,” Mir said. “I think earlier on when people are drier, it’s easier to get a submission because it’s easier to hold on. By the third and fourth round, people are sweating and submissions start falling off.

UFC Fight Night 85 will take place at Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Brisbane, Australia on Sunday, March 20, in Australia, but airs on Saturday, March 19, in North America. The event will air on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. The prelims start at 6:30 p.m. ET and the main card 10 p.m. ET.

That was the case at Thursday’s UFC Fight Night 85 Media Day staredowns, where ‘The Super Samoan’ definitely took the edge off by removing his shirt when he noticed that he and Mir somehow showed up in the same clothes, inciting a bit of humor in a time that is supposed to be tense.
