Ben Rothwell Defends Upcoming Opponent Junior Dos Santos

Ben Rothwell got a little defensive during a recent appearance on “UFC Tonight” when the future of his opponent, Junior dos Santos, was brought up.

The two heavyweight contenders meet this coming Sunday from Croatia in the main event of UFC Fight Night 86.

Despite being just 2-3 in his last five fights, dos Santos is a former champion. He also holds a win during that time over current title contender Stipe Miocic. Rothwell is on a four-fight win streak, all of which have come via finish.

“Why are we talking bad about him?” Rothwell wondered. “His back’s against the wall. He’s an animal backed into a corner. He’s going to be ferocious. I’ve been training for the champion Junior and he better be all of that because that’s what I’m coming to fight.”

Rothwell, who has flexed his submission skills as of late, made sure to let everyone know he holds knockout power in his hands much like “Cigano.” The Brazilian jiu-jitsu purple belt owns 20 career stoppages via KO or TKO to his credit.

“I have that too. Who knows what he’s going to do? I bring out the best in everybody,” he said. “I’m sure he’s changing up something in his camp. He throws a hard left hook, a hard left overhand and has added in kicks too. It doesn’t matter. I’m ready for anything.”

Junior Dos Santos On Importance Of Ben Rothwell Fight, UFC Title Aspirations

Junior Dos Santos admits that his next fight against Ben Rothwell is an important fight on his road to hopefully recapture the UFC Heavyweight Championship he once held in the past. The former UFC Heavyweight Champion appeared as a guest on Monday’s edition of “The MMA Hour” at MMAFighting.com and spoke about his fight with Rothwell, his UFC title aspirations and more.

When asked if his fight against Rothwell will be a “do-or-die” moment in his UFC career, Dos Santos replied, “Yeah, for sure. I think it’s a very important fight for me. Right now, I feel this fight that I have with Ben Rothwell is tougher than my last fight. I know I had a negative result in my last fight but this one now, I think if I win, and I will win this fight now, this win will put me back in the place I was before, the number one or two in the rankings and close to a title fight again. Of course I’m not thinking about title fight now, I just wanna be in the best position I can. It’s my whole life, it’s very important for me.”

Dos Santos also explained why he feels he’s still in title contention in the UFC’s heavyweight division.

“I’m sure I got everything that it takes to be the champion again, so I just need to put everything in the right place, including my mind, my head, because we have to be confident,” he said. “To deal with this negative moment for me has been very tough because since my debut in the UFC in 2008, I just had victories, victories and victories until I became champion of the world. Then I lost to Cain Velasquez, I started to live bad, bad moments, including with injuries, and I’m trying to go out of those moments and start living the winning moments again. That’s why I’m working so hard now.”

Before he can recapture the UFC Heavyweight Championship, JDS must get past Ben Rothwell, who is coming off of an impressive submission victory over Josh Barnett.

“He’s doing great, especially his last fight against Barnett,” JSD said of Rothwell. “Nobody ever submitted Barnett and he did that. That was impressive. He’s coming from a great moment and that’s why it’s so important for me to fight him.”

Junior Dos Santos vs. Ben Rothwell takes place at UFC Fight Night 86 at the Zagreb Arena in Zagreb, Croatia on April 10, 2016.

Former UFC Champ: Stipe Miocic Should Knock Out Fabricio Werdum

No. 5-ranked former UFC heavyweight champion Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos suffered a brutal TKO loss in his last bout to Alistair Overeem last December.

Despite the loss, however, Dos Santos’ title hopes haven’t been completely killed just yet given the wide open landscape of the UFC’s heavyweight division.

In fact, the Brazilian slugger owns wins over both men competing in the next title fight at May’s UFC 198, champion Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum and contender Stipe Miocic.

Since returning to the UFC in 2012, Werdum has rattled off an impressive six straight wins including four finishes. While noting his recent success along with his world class ground game, Dos Santos actually sees “Vai Cavlo” running into trouble against Miocic, especially if the fight plays out on the feet:

“Werdum has evolved a lot, he impressed in the few times he fought. He has evolved a lot,” dos Santos told MMAFighting.com. “His ground game is the best in the heavyweight division, no question about it. He has what it takes to keep the belt for a good time, but he’s facing a tough opponent next. Miocic has that knockout punch. I was completely dizzy a few moments when we fought. He has that punch, and his stand-up is more complete and better than Werdum’s.

“I don’t see how… Werdum is excellent on the ground, but I don’t see him taking anyone down. If the fight stays standing, I see Miocic as the favorite. If it goes to the ground, it’s going to be fast. But I see Miocic as the favorite standing. Comparing their qualities, I don’t see Werdum taking him down, so it’s going to be a stand-up fight and Miocic has an advantage.”

Miocic has scored back to back finishes over Mark Hunt and Andrei Arlovski, and has won five of his last six with his only loss in that stretch coming to, you guessed it, Dos Santos.

“Cigano” also has a fight of his own lined up, as he’s set to meet surging contender Ben Rothwell in the main event of UFC Fight Night 86 next month.

As for his future, Dos Santos feels as if the state of the heavyweight divisional is beneficial to the fighters, admitting that his only goal is to regain the throne:

“I think it’s great that I already beat the two guys in the next title fight,” he said. “I think it’s great that the division is stacked. When you have someone holding the belt for so long… It’s positive in a way, yes, but the division is in a good moment.

“I don’t care that much about rankings, and that doesn’t matter that much in the UFC too,” he continued. “What really matters is which fight sells more at the moment. I want to move forward and get to my goals. My main goal is to become world champion again, and I know I’m capable of doing that, but I need to earn a title shot first, and I might need two or three fights. But I’m capable of doing that.”

Do you ever see “Cigano” climbing back up the mountain?

Junior Dos Santos Explains Why He Feels Miocic Has Edge Over Werdum At UFC 198

While former UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior Dos Santos admits that current UFC Heavyweight Champion Fabricio Werdum has improved a lot over the years, he is still giving the edge to the challenger, Stipe Miocic, in the next UFC Heavyweight title fight.

Dos Santos spoke with Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of “The MMA Hour” at MMAFighting.com and explained why he feels Miocic has the advantage over Werdum heading into their scheduled showdown at UFC 198 in Werdum’s home country of Brazil.

“Werdum has evolved a lot, he impressed in the few times he fought. He has evolved a lot. His ground game is the best in the heavyweight division, no question about it. He has what it takes to keep the belt for a good time, but he’s facing a tough opponent next. Miocic has that knockout punch. I was completely dizzy a few moments when we fought. While he still has to get past Ben Rothwell at UFC Fight Night 86 on April 10th, JDS admits that he feels good knowing that he holds wins over the two fighters who will be competing in the next UFC Heavyweight title bout.
