Thomas Almeida vs. Cody Garbrandt:

Mike Drahota:

I found it a bit surprising that the UFC was willing to book two of the suddenly booming bantamweight division’s up-and-coming talents against one another so soon, but they are most certainly two of the most exciting strikers at 135 pounds, so that dynamic should be a recipe for Memorial Day fireworks in Las Vegas. I believe it will become a slugfest rather rapidly thanks in no small part to the bad blood spoken in the media and from the fight week hotel confrontation between Garbrandt and Almeida’s team, so this is going to come down to Almeida’s Muay Thai and Garbrandt’s boxing. While the undefeated Brazilian sensation did get caught by veteran Brad Pickett at UFC 189 last July, I believe he simply has more ways to win with elbows, kicks, and knees while also having more experience (even if it is against “cab drivers” like “No Love” said). It should be a back-and-forth fight, and Garbrandt could obviously catch him with a big shot that ends the bout, but I’m going with Almeida by third-round TKO.

Rory Kernaghan:

Thomas Almeida comes in to this fight undefeated at 21-0, off the back of three straight knockouts from four UFC wins, and possibly the toughest fight of his career against Brad Pickett. This is where the difference will be made against the harsh striker Cody Garbrandt, because aside from experience and having dug to the limit more times, there’s not really much to separate these two. I also feel that ‘Terminator’ has a little more variety in his attacks than ‘No Love,’ although Garbrandt’s patented Team Alpha Male style footwork is a sight to behold. Expect a war, won by Almeida by TKO in round three.

Mike Henken:

I have to say that I’m extremely excited for this scrap, as two of the division’s best undefeated rising contenders will do battle to prove who truly belongs in the title discussion. The 24-year-old Garbrandt has established himself as a legitimate fighter with great speed and strong knockout power as shown in his last bout, but he’ll be facing off with a scary, scary man in Almeida. The Brazilian packs a 21-0 professional record with an impressive 16 knockouts. I just feel as if his arsenal will be too much for “No Love.” Almeida by third round knockout.

Renan Barao vs. Jeremy Stephens:

Mike Drahota:

On paper this is an incredibly tough test in a move up a weight class for formerly dominant bantamweight champion Barao, who hasn’t looked anything close to his once-cowering form since TJ Dillashaw shockingly dethroned him in devastating fashion at UFC 173 two years ago. Although Stephens has shown bouts of inconsistency mixed with bouts of brilliance, his last loss to Max Holloway came to a potential future title contender at featherweight. Barao has obviously yet to attain that after admitting the cut down to 15 pounds was simply too much anymore, and this fight could be a rude awakening for him. Stephens is a power-punching brawler with great takedown defense, and Barao has exhibited a concerning tendency to stand still and eat punches later. Up at 145 against a knockout specialist by the highly experienced Stephens, I don’t believe that will end well for him. Stephens stops Barao by TKO in the first round.

Rory Kernaghan:

Former champion Barao faces frequent underdog Stephens in a battle of heavy hitters. The former bantamweight champion has a tough debut at featherweight against Stephens, who has a habit of knocking people silly when it’s against the odds. Where this fight is won is anyone’s guess, mine is that Barao is getting upset here. I think Stephens clips ‘Baron’ early on and continue the run of bad luck befalling the Brazilian Nova Uniao camp. Jeremy Stephens upsets the former champion by one-punch knockout in round one.

Mike Henken:

The former bantamweight champion Barao will be moving up to his new home at 145 pounds for the first time, and he won’t be given a tune-up fight in any way. Stephens is a very experienced and gritty veteran who possesses brutal knockout power and a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. However, I feel as if “The Baron’s” combination of championship caliber Muay Thai and submission skills will get the job done. I also think the easier weight cut will play a factor here. Barao by unanimous decision.

Renan Barao is set to make his UFC featherweight debut after two unsuccessful attempts at former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw.

The Brazilian was finished by Dillashaw in the fifth round of their first encounter at UFC 173, where Dillashaw won the title from Barao after a devastating head kick.

The two met once again in a title rematch at UFC on FOX 18, this time however Dillashaw finished the Brazilian thirty-five seconds into the fourth round.

MMA: UFC 173-Renan Barao vs. TJ DillashawNow Barao takes a step up into the 145-pound division, after some disastrous weight cuts to 135 pounds, and takes on No. 9-Ranked featherweight Jeremy Stephens.

In a recent interview with FOX Sports, Stephens expressed his excitement for his upcoming bout against the former king of the bantamweight division:

“This is the type of fight I want. It’s probably one of the reasons why I’m one of the higher paced featherweights,” Stephens said.

“This is what I signed up for. This is what I love. Coming off the last fight, it wasn’t much of a fight. It was so weird and I just didn’t really feel like I got to fight.

So I stayed in shape and thought maybe I’d get a short notice fight and then they gave me a guy in Renan Barao. It just goes to show the faith the company has in me.

They want to see me fight. They want to match me up with the best and they like seeing a fist fight.”

Jeremy Stephens‘Lil’ Heathen’ expects to stand and trade with Barao, and claims he doesn’t have to worry about point fighting against the Brazilian:

“With Renan Barao, you don’t have to worry about him running all over the place, point fighting or anything like that. He brings it and I know he’s going to be hungry coming off two losses (to TJ Dillashaw). I’m excited for this.”

Stephens is confident in his ability to finish Barao, but isn’t afraid to go the distance with the former bantamweight champ either:

“If I don’t break him in the first exchange or when he wants to take me down, because I know he’s going to want to take me down, as soon as he can’t get me down to the mat I’m just going to keep breaking him, breaking him, breaking him and I can beat him up for 15 minutes or I can knock him out with one shot,” Stephens said.

While Stephens expects a healthier and more conditioned Barao, he still expects to welcome the Brazilian to the 145-pound division in the harshest way possible:

“I think him going up into a weight class, he’ll be a little bit more healthy and he’ll have better nutrition and maybe better cardio.

I feel like him moving up is a smart move but I’m not a stepping stone for anybody. I’m not a pushover. I’m really enjoying the fact that he has to fight me and I’d love to welcome him and I’d love to knock him the (expletive) out to be honest.”

I have the power in all three rounds. I feel like everything he’s good at, I’m better. I have more power in my punches and I have just as much experience as this kid.

I feel really good about this fight. I’ve seen things in the fights with Dillashaw and I’m not Dillashaw. He’s never fought anybody like me.

I’m going to be just as big if not bigger. I’m going to be strong. Once I land, I’m going to land and I don’t just TKO you. I knock you out to where they have to wake you up and they’ve got to ask their coaches what happened.”

renan baraoStephens can empathize with Barao’s situation, as he moved down to featherweight after multiple losses towards the end of his run in the 155-pound division:

“I know people are going to ask him those questions, but I feel those are questions he’s probably been asking himself,” Stephen said. “I’ve been in his situations where I’ve come off two losses.

I’ve been there and what I took from it was I was hungry like a lion. I was starving. So I had to kill something in order to keep my job.

So I’m preparing for that hungry Renan Barao that wants to come back, but those are a lot of mental issues, which I feel everything in life is 80-percent mental and 20-percent physical. Everything starts in the mind.”

In the end Stephens plans to send Barao home with yet another loss on his record, spoiling the Brazilian’s debut in the 145-pound division:

“Starting in his mind it’s like ‘is my chin all right?’, ‘I’m fighting a heavier hitter than Dillashaw’, ‘I’m coming off two losses am I going to get cut?’, ‘I’m moving up to a different weight class’. He’s asking himself a lot.”

“I’m a human highlight reel,” Stephens said. “I like to put people out, it’s exciting and it pays my bills and puts more money in my bank account and I just love to do it. I love it.”

Stephens and Barao are set to lock horns in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 88 this Sunday night, May 29th, 2016.

The UFC women’s bantamweight champion isn’t amused…

A feud dating back to 2015 will come to a head at UFC Fight Night 88, as undefeated bantamweight prospect Aljamain Sterling faces off against Bryan Caraway in Las Vegas this Sunday (May 29, 2016). The two have been engaging in a frequent war of words, as ‘Aljo’ has been accusing Caraway of ducking him since joining the UFC in 2014. Currently 13-0, Sterling came close to testing the free market after defeating Johnny Eduardo, but finally came to an agreement with the promotion and was booked in against Caraway.

The boyfriend of UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate, Caraway fights out of Xtreme Couture and most recently beat Eddie Wineland by decision in July 2015. It won’t only be his own pride he’s fighting for this weekend though, as some of Sterling’s recent comments have got under ‘Cupcake’s’ skin.

usa-today-8988736.0[1]

The 26 year-old ‘Funkmaster’ recently told MMAJunkie his feelings towards Caraway, stating his upcoming opponent needs to ‘grow some balls.’

“I just think, as a man, to be called out so many different times by all these other fighters, and not saying anything back, is just mind-blowing to me.”

“Where I come from, you talk (expletive) and get your ass whooped, or you talk (expletive) and you shut the other guy up. That’s how it goes.”

“He’s just strange, man. Grow a set of balls. Outside of that, he’s a tough dude. I know it’s not going to be an easy fight.”

Miesha Tate Bryan Caraway

Also taking the time to mock Caraway as ‘Mr. Tate,’ Sterling has urged a response from Miesha Tate, and she’s not impressed. Also rather hilariously, ‘Funkmaster’ photo bombs Caraway during an official photo shoot.
