Roy Nelson Explains Kicking “Big” John McCarthy After TKO’ing Bigfoot At UFN 95

At the UFC Fight Night 95 post-fight press conference held after the big event in Brasilia, Brazil on Saturday night, UFC Heavyweight contender Roy “Big Country” Nelson spoke about his post-match actions at the show.

After TKO’ing Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in the second round of their main card bout on Saturday (video highlights here), Nelson kicked referee “Big” John McCarthy.

As Nelson explained at the post-fight presser, he was frustrated that he was forced to hit Bigfoot more times than necessary due to what he considered a late stoppage from “Big” John.

“I’m friends with ‘Bigfoot,’ he has a family, you know? I don’t need to keep punching him in his face. And it’s not one of those like where If I it him so hard and he fell flat on his face that I could have walked away like Mark Hunt. But he fell on his back. I felt like I was giving ‘Bigfoot’ extra damage where he doesn’t actually have to get hit that much. It was more of a push. Like, ‘Dude, come one.’ We had a conversation in the cage about and I told him, ‘He was knocked out.’ And he said, ‘No he wasn’t.’ I know what a knockout is. I knock people out, that’s what I do for a living. For me, it was just one of those, I didn’t want to hurt him more than I had to. It’s like a cop beating the shit out of somebody. It’s like, ‘Dude, enough’s enough.’ It hurt my feelings. I apologized to ‘Big John,’ but I wouldn’t take it back. It just hurt me that I had to keep on hitting a guy that didn’t need to be hit.”

Joe Rogan: UFC Needs To Build Division Around Cyborg

Beloved UFC commentator Joe Rogan may have cut down on his work load going forward with the powerhouse mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion, but that doesn’t mean the life-long fight fan wasn’t watching UFC Brasilia from the comfort of his own home.

Shortly after Invicta FC featherweight champion Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Justino did what she does best when she finished UFC newcomer Lina Lansberg in the second round of their main event contest at UFC Fight Night 95, Rogan took to Twitter to campaign for his employers to implicate a new 145-pound weight class for the dominant Brazilian competitor who has been struggling to make 140 pounds for catchweight bouts in the UFC:

As Rogan notes, women’s MMA has made ‘leaps and bounds’ in the past few years with dominating competitors such as ‘Cyborg’ and Ronday Rousey paving the way for young up-and-coming female stars such as UFC strawweight champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Paige VanZant:

Rogan also went on to state that if the UFC were to open up more weight classes as they have for its male competitors, it would help the women’s division of MMA grow even more:

‘Cyborg’s’ championship weight currently sits at 145-pounds where she rules as the division’s champion in Invicta FC, however, since making her Octagon debut in her past two 140-pound catchweight bouts the weight cut has been a grueling process for the dominating featherweight.

The highest weight class the UFC currently carries for women is bantamweight at 145-pounds, and if the UFC decided to indeed create a women’s featherweight division around the mythical being that is Justino it could pay huge dividends for the promotion.

Heavyweight slugger Roy “Big Country” Nelson added another vicious knockout victory to his record at last night’s (September 25, 2016) UFC Fight Night 95, drilling Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva with a brutal right hand in the second round. Nelson was forced to follow up with a few extra blows, however, and it was clear that he wasn’t pleased with the stoppage, as he actually threw a kick towards referee John McCarthy:

“It was a push,” Nelson said of the kick at the UFC Fight Night 95 post-fight press conference. “It was more of like, dude, come on.

“Then we had a conversation in the cage. I was like, ‘Dude, he was knocked out.’ And [McCarthy] was like, ‘No, he wasn’t.’ And I’m like, dude, I know what a knockout is. I knock people out. That’s what I do for a living. I know what a knockout is. Just because the guy didn’t roll his eyes into the back of his head, or shake, or whatever … it was just one of those things.”

“Big Country” admits that he got caught up in the heat of the moment, but he doesn’t regret his actions. Nelson simply said that “Bigfoot” didn’t need to take any more damage:

“I didn’t want to hurt ‘Bigfoot’ more than I had to,” Nelson said. “And I got taken by the moment, because it’s like I’m beating the sh*t out of somebody and you’re like, dude, enough is enough. And for me, it hurt my feelings. And I apologize to Big John, but I wouldn’t take it back. It just hurt me, that I’ve got to keep on hitting a guy that doesn’t need to be hit.”

“I knew I already knocked him out with my first punch, and then I got him one more time,” Nelson said. “In my head, it was like slow-mo, like I’m having a conversation with John going, ‘hey man, how is the weather over there?’ That’s what it felt like. I’m friends with ‘Bigfoot,’ and he has a family. I don’t need to keep on punching him in his face. And it’s not one of those (things) like, if I hit him so hard that he fell flat on his face, I would’ve just walked off like Mark Hunt. But he fell on his back.”

“It wasn’t like [McCarthy] was so far away. He was over here to my side, and I know I had a conversation (with him). I’m like, he’s out. He’s like, ‘no he’s not, keep on moving.’ So for me, I feel like I’m giving ‘Bigfoot’ extra damage, where he doesn’t actually need to get hit that much.”

What do you make of Nelson’s reaction to the stoppage?

Former UFC champion Renan Barao picked up his first win at featherweight, besting a game Phillipe Nover in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 95 Saturday night.

Earlier this year, Barao was defeated by Jeremy Stephens in his debut at 145 pounds. He lost the bantamweight belt to TJ Dillashaw and a subsequent rematch, prompting his move to featherweight after issues cutting weight.

Nover was a runner-up on The Ultimate Fighter.
