Junior dos Santos is Now Off The UFC Fight Night Event in Halifax

It looks like next month’s UFC Fight Night card in Halifax won’t be seeing Junior dos Santos in action. The former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight title holder took to Twitter to reveal he is no longer a part of that event.

“Cigano” was originally supposed to fight Stefan Struve in a rematch. Dos Santos earned a TKO win over “Skyscraper” back in Feb. 2009. The fight lasted just 54 seconds.

A torn labrum forced Struve to pull out and dos Santos was left without an opponent. At first, UFC officials were looking for a replacement. It appears they couldn’t find one who would agree to face “Cigano” on short notice.

There has been no word on what the planned main event will be for the card. It’s a tough break for dos Santos, who hasn’t competed since April 2016. He beat Ben Rothwell from pillar to post for five rounds in his last bout. It was the type of performance “Cigano” needed after suffering a TKO loss to Alistair Overeem.

After getting beat badly in the second and third bouts with Cain Velasquez, many have questioned if dos Santos will ever return to form. While his thrashing of Rothwell was a good sign, some are still skeptical.

The former champion remains confident that he’s going to climb the 265-pound mountain once again. He holds a knockout win over Fabricio Werdum from 2008 and a controversial decision victory over the reigning title holder Stipe Miocic.

Right now, there is no clear contender at heavyweight. Stipe just disposed of Overeem, Velasquez is out with an injury, and Werdum was knocked out by Miocic at UFC 198. It’ll be interesting to see if the UFC books a title eliminator between Werdum and dos Santos, or if they decide to give one of them a title shot.

The UFC Fight Night event is set for Feb. 19 inside the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Hendricks vs. Lombard Targeted For UFC Halifax

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31JEFfgB7j8

It looks like former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks isn’t done with the UFC just yet. Despite claiming he would retire if defeated by Neil Magny at UFC 207 (which is exactly what happened, but Hendricks backtracked on the claim prior to the fight), Hendricks has been linked to a bout with former Bellator middleweight champ Hector Lombard. According to a report by MMAFighting’s Ariel Helwani, the fight is being targeted for the struggling UFC Halifax card on February 19. Previously, a heavyweight tilt between Junior Dos Santos and Stefan Struve was slated as the main event. Struve, however, pulled out earlier this month due to injury, and a replacement has not been found.

Per Helwani, UFC officials have yet to decide if Hendricks vs. Lombard will serve as the new main event, but it’s likely that Dos Santos is off the card. Nearly every other marquee heavyweight in the promotion is currently booked, injured, or suspended.

Lombard (34–6–1 (2) enters the fight on a two-fight losing skid, dropping losses to Magny and Dan Henderson, who finished him with a vicious head kick and elbow sequence at UFC 199. Hendricks (17–6), meanwhile, has lost two straight to Magny and Kelvin Gastelum, and missed weight on both occasions.

The fight is reportedly set for 185lbs, and would mark Hendricks’ debut as a middleweight, as well as Lombard’s return to the division.

Junior dos Santos Wants to Remain on UFC Halifax Card, Still Has no Opponent

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VioSxscHAEQ

Calling all Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweights, Junior dos Santos is looking for a fight on Feb. 19. Last week, Stefan Struve went down with a shoulder injury. It was later revealed he had tore his labrum. As a result, he was pulled from his scheduled bout with dos Santos at next month’s UFC Fight Night event in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

MMAJunkie.com reached out to “Cigano” to get an update on his status for the event. The former UFC heavyweight champion is still preparing for a fight next month:

“We don’t really know the situation. What the UFC told us is that they’re looking for an opponent, especially because we were the main event in Halifax. So I’m still training and awaiting news.”

The last time dos Santos stepped inside the Octagon was in April 2016. Many were counting him out after his first round knockout loss to Alistair Overeem. “Cigano” proved those skeptics wrong by beating Ben Rothwell from pillar to post for five rounds. Now, Dos Santos is getting agitated with his poor luck finding competition.

“It’s very frustrating, to be honest. It’s tough, because you know how hard it was to find an opponent. I think many things were happening in the division, but we weren’t able to find an opponent. A few of them were injured, others serving suspensions, others with fights booked and others who wouldn’t take the fight – which for me is kind of absurd, but OK. Unfortunately, (Struve) got hurt. I can’t judge things without knowing, and I’ve been in his position before, so I can only wish him a good recovery so he can return as fast as possible. Who knows – maybe in the future we can fight.”

Still, dos Santos is optimistic about 2017.

“I’m absolutely certain that in 2017, I will be able to show even to those who don’t believe my words, I will be able to prove to everyone that what I’m saying is true. I will end this year as heavyweight champion, I have no doubt about that.”
