James Vick Says He’s ‘Mentally Stronger’ Than Rival UFC Lightweights

James Vick says he’s simply not susceptible to mental warfare.

James Vick says he’s mentally stronger than his fellow competitors in the UFC’s 155-pound division.

Vick will main event tomorrow night’s (Sat. August 25, 2018) UFC Lincoln event opposite Justin Gaethje. Speaking to MMA Junkie ahead of the bout, Vick noted that it’s near impossible to get inside his head before a big fight.

He credits his tough road to the UFC for this. Vick said he survived a “horrible” contract from The Ultimate Fighter, two major surgeries and a full-time job he worked while juggling a fight career in the UFC:

“Some of these guys have never had a job in their whole life,” Vick said. “So I feel like I’ve had the hard road. But I also feel that’s why I’m mentally stronger than all these guys.”

Vick expects Gaethje to utilize his usual pressure approach when they share the Octagon. The Texan believes he’ll catch the former World Series Of Fighting (WSOF) champ coming in and flatline him:

“The way he fights and the way I fight, (Gaethje) is not going to accept being on the outside and losing a point battle,” Vick said.

“He’d rather get knocked out. So he will come in, and he’s going to get caught with something. He’s going to run into something closing that distance.”

Ready For A Slugfest

Gaethje is one of the most relentless competitors mixed martial arts (MMA) has ever seen. Regardless of how tired and/or beaten he is, he continues to press forward with power punches.

Vick knows Gaethje has the ability to drag him into deep waters in a dogfight, but claims he has the stamina to do exactly that:

“I’m aware of what he does, and I’d be stupid to not address his leg kicks and the pace that he comes with,” Vick said.

“But I’ve never had a problem in any fight with cardio. No one’s ever gassed me out. That’s where he’s messing up. He thinks I’m not mentally prepared.

“Either two things are going to happen. Either he’s going to get knocked out real quick, or we’re going to go to war. But in my mind, I’m way mentally stronger than he is.

“I just don’t have to fight like that. So come fourth or fifth round, if I’m losing on those cards, you’re going to see who’s going to bite down on that mouthpiece and who’s the dog.”

Video: Justin Gaethje Has Been Training His Whole Life For UFC Lincoln

“The Highlight” is more than ready for James Vick. Justin Gaethje has been training his whole life for UFC Lincoln.

Lincoln, NB – “The Highlight” maybe on a two-fight losing streak, regardless Justin Gaethje has been training his whole life for UFC Lincoln’s main event.

The 29-year-old Gaethje is usually a softspoken mild manner guy. That is until he enters the cage; all bets are off at that point. However, his opponent in this weekend’s UFC Lincoln main event James Vick has managed to get under his skin quite a bit.

“I don’t admire anything about his fighting style,” Gaethje told LowkickMMA and other press in attendance for UFC Lincoln’s media day.

“[He’s a] Point fighter, constantly going backward,” Gaethje explained. “But he’s ranked number ten in the UFC, so he’s going to be a big challenge for me. I’ve got to go out there, I’ve gotta get the W. Be a little more patient than normal, pick my shots.”

When asked if he thought Vick had any game-changing talents that he should be aware of, Gaethje offered up some mild words of encouragement.

“He doesn’t like to get hit. He gets hit going backward, and that’s the worst way to get hit. So when I do touch him, he’s going to feel it.” [However] “He’s got good D’arce chokes, good guillotine chokes, I don’t need to stick my neck in one of those.”

Since entering the UFC “The Highlight” has gone 1-2. Although he has dropped his last two in a row Gaethje remains one of the most fan-friendly fighters competing in the sport. Be that as it may, ‘The Violent One’ has come under scrutiny for not using his wrestling skills enough during his losing streak.

When asked if he might bust out the old singlet Gaethje said, “No, I don’t know. I have no idea. I go in there, I’m definitely going to put pressure on him. “I’m going to pressure him with my feet. I don’t necessarily need to throw as much, but I’m going to pressure him with my feet, he’s going to be constantly going backward, which is a given with James.”

Gaethje’s plan to pressure “The Texecutioner” could bode well for the former WSOF champion. Beneil Dariush employed a similar strategy in his victory over Vick. Coincidently the last time the Texan tasted defeat.

Gaethje put it like this when asked if he is ready for the moment, “I’ve trained my whole life for this. Four years old I started training, in hindsight, for this August 25 [2018] verse James Vick.”

Al Iaquinta Has Given Up On The UFC Getting Behind Him

Al Iaquinta’s UFC career continues to look unclear.

The post Al Iaquinta Has Given Up On The UFC Getting Behind Him appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Al Iaquinta has given up on the UFC ever getting behind him even more than ever.

“Ragin” was initially expected to be facing Justin Gaethje in the main event of this weekend’s (Sat. August 25, 2018) UFC Lincoln card. The Long Islander was forced off the card and will instead be enjoying the view of the beach, which is 10 minutes away from his house.

In an interview with MMA Fighting, Iaquinta revealed that the money he makes selling houses as a real estate agent is comparable to that of his show money in the UFC:

“Basically, in the time that I would have trained for that fight, I made as much money selling real estate,” Iaquinta said.

“So, it’s not a money thing. I enjoyed my summer, I wasn’t going to bed injured every night, I wasn’t waking up with a sore neck.

“I didn’t have to worry about Justin Gaethje’s crazy ***. I’m doing what I want to do. If they made it worth it for me, I would have. I’m making my show money in that amount of time when these deals close out.

“It’s crazy that a real estate agent on Long Island can make their show money for headlining a five-round fight against a top-six, top-seven guy in the world.”

Iaquinta said he injured his shoulder at UFC 223 fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov. Although it was an unsuccessful bid for the vacant UFC lightweight title, the 31-year-old showed a ton of heart and determination against the undefeated Russian grappler.

Ragin’ Realty

Upon getting the call to fight Gaethje, Iaquinta said he felt rushed by the UFC to get back into the Octagon . He also said he thought maybe the UFC was not looking out for Gaethje’s best interest either because he’s coming off back-to-back knockout losses:

“I was almost like, you’re not looking out for me and you’re not looking out for Gaethje,” Iaquinta said. “The guy just got pummeled his last three fights.

“You’re not looking out for him, you don’t care about me, because you didn’t even ask me how I’m feeling. They called me that night of the fight and a couple weeks later they offered me another fight. The rest of the fighters, they all would have taken the fight, you know what I mean? They all would have taken it and they would have had to push through the injury. I was like, you know what? F*ck this.

“I’m gonna make just as much money walking around, meeting people selling real estate. I’m making great connections with people like me — my kind of people. It’s a beautiful thing. So, my friends are buying houses. It’s just so much better. I had such a great time. The last two months of my life were just so much better. So much more stress free. And I made just as much money.

“Could I have fought Gaethje and got something? It really doesn’t matter. Shots come and go. It’s not even about winning and losing. I don’t know. The more I think about it, the more frustrated I get.”

Iaquinta’s Outlook

Right now, Iaquinta therefore is able to live his life at his pace. He’s training when he wants, improving when he wants and making great money due to it. At this point, he has given up on the UFC getting behind him – so he’s getting behind himself above all:

“I’m training, I’m having fun in the gym,” Iaquinta said. “I’m training when I want to train, I’m getting better when I want to get better. I don’t have to do anything.

“Am I missing out on opportunities? Maybe. It’s too much stress. I’m having fun with my life now. I’ve given up on the UFC getting behind me. So I’m just getting behind myself.”
