Round One:

A leg kick is the first strike of the fight from Swanson. Swanson then ducks a strike and attempts a takedown but it’s stuffed by Lobov, who pressures Swanson against the cage before getting a takedown of his own. Swanson powers back up and begin to exchange strikes once again.

Swanson lands a nice kick to the body and Lobov responds with a leg kick. Lobov really getting in some nice leg kicks now, before landing a straight left. Swanson throws a spinning head kick that misses, and Lobov responds with one to the body that also hits air.

Lobov resumes his attack on Swanson’s leg and lands a nice body shot as well. The round ends with a head-kick from Swanson and Lobov responding with a few blocked shots to the head.

Round Two:

Both men want to press the action to open the round, and Swanson lands a big high-kick that Lobov seems to eat without a blink. More shots to the chin land for Swanson and Lobov continues the attack on his front leg. A big overhand right lands for Lobov but Swanson responds with a hook of his own.

Lobov catches Swanson with some knees to the body in the clinch and Swanson is able to avoid a couple of trips. The pair exchange shots in the clinch for quite a while, most likely to catch their breaths, and Swanson throws Lobov down and gets top control. Swanson gets the mount and then takes Lobov’s back.

Swanson throws some nice shots to the head of Lobov from the back, but Lobov stands up and is able to buck Swanson off. The round ends with a right hand landing for Lobov.

Round Three:

The pair exchange leg kicks to open the round and Swanson is able to land a pair of left hooks. Swanson lands a few more left hooks and smiles right at Lobov. A big overhand right lands for Swanson and Lobov responds with a straight left. And inside elbow lands for Swanson, who now initiates the clinch.

Lobov throws Swanson off and lands a nice body shot before eating a couple of big hooks from Swanson. Swanson lands a nice wheel kick and follows it up with some more big shots that seem to wobble Lobov now. The ref calls for a time out to check on a cut that has opened on Lobov’s eyelid.

The doctor clears Lobov to continue and we’re back underway. Swanson resumes pressure and attacks Lobov’s lead leg. Another big left hook lands from Swanson, and who follows that up with a nice crane kick. Swanson continues to land nice combinations on the Russian while avoiding strikes at teh same time.

Swanson lands a beautiful straight right to Lobov’s chin, and the round ends with a cartwheel kick landing from Swanson – but it was caught and he was taken down just before the horn.

Round Four:

Swanson lands a nice front kick to the body to start the round. Lobov lands an uppercut that buckles Swanson’s knees and then pressures him against the cage. Swanson wiggles free and eats a right hook from Lobov. Lobov lands a few more left hooks and the two re-engage in the clinch.

A spinning back elbow from Swanson breaks up the action and lands flush. A few more hooks land for Swanson and the two begin exchanging nice shots again. Lobov now shoots in on a takedown but it’s stuffed and they clinch up again. They disengage and Swanson lands a right hand that wobbles Lobov.

Two straight rights land for Swanson and Lobov fails on another takedown attempt. Lobov lands a nice knee in the clinch and Swanson throws a spinning head kick that doesn’t land to end the round.

Round Five:

Both men touch gloves and bow to open the fifth and final round. Lobov lands a shot to Swanson’s chin that sends him down but it was most likely due to loss of balance. Swanson pops back up and pressures Lobov against the cage.

Lobov gets free and they begin to exchange hard shots again. Swanson lans three punches to Lobov’s chin but the Russian continues to press forward. Swanson again pressures Lobov against the cage, Lobov changes level for a takedown, but it’s stuffed. Another takedown attempt from Lobov is stuffed and again we’re clinched against the cage.

Swanson gets a knee up and hits Lobov in the chin but he continues to press him against the cage. Swanson is agle to get free now and lands a nice combination to Lobov’s chin. A nice head-kick lands for Swanson but Lobov remains unfazed. They clinch up again and Swanson gets a beautiful judo thrown and establishes mount.

Next up on tonight’s (April 22, 2017) UFC card from Nashville is a lightweight clash between UFC veteran Joe Lauzon and Stevie Ray.

Round One:

Ray immediately took Octagon control but had a front kick caught by Lauzon, who landed a knee to Ray’s face. The two clinched up against the cage and exchanged controlling position, before Lauzon again got the takedown. Lauzon took Ray’s back immediately but was unable to get his second leg hooked.

Lauzon went for the rear-naked choke but then transitioned to top mount. Lauzon let a few elbows reign down and Ray was able to get back into half guard. Again Lauzon got top control and continued his onslaught of elbows.

Ray was finally able to close his guard, but that lasted only momentarily as Lauzon was able to again advance to half guard and continue landing elbows to end the round.

Round Two:

Lauzon took Octagon control this time and avoided Ray’s stand-up attack. Ray continued to throw offense Lauzon’s way, but it was mostly blocked as Lauzon continued to walk him down and search for his opening for the takedown.

A caught kick almost landed Lauzon the takedown but Ray was able to scramble out after clinching up against the cage. Ray begun to pack a lot more behind his strikes and Lauzon looked spent before bursting out with a huge takedown. An elbow landed for Lauzon, who was able to advance to half guard.

After a scramble Ray attempted another ankle lock on Lauzon to close out the round.

Round Three:

Ray opened the third round with some elbow strikes of his own. He then threw a high-kick that didn’t land before continuing to throw elbows in the pocket. Lauzon shot in on Ray’s leg but the attempt was unsuccessful. Lauzon landed a nice straight left, followed by a right hook, then Lauzon got in on a takedown.

Ray responded by throwing a plethora of elbows to Lauzon’s head, but Lauzon was finally able to get Ray down. Ray landed a nice series of elbows to Lauzon’s head from bottom, and Lauzon was slow to respond with only a few strikes from top. Ray scrambled to his feet and pressured Lauzon against the cage as they locked up.

After establishing the thai clinch Ray landed some nice knees and then a body kick. Ray then uncorked some nasty offense that had Lauzon rocked badly on the feet. Ray ended the round unloading on Lauzon, who was very visibly shaken.

Official Result: Stevie Ray def. Joe Lauzon via Majority Decision (28-27, 29-27, 28-28)

Sam Alvey doesn’t think Georges St-Pierre’s Octagon return is going to go as planned.

The No. 13-ranked middleweight is set to take on Thales Leites on the FS1 preliminary headliner at UFC Nashville tomorrow (Sat. April 22, 2017) night, in hopes of cracking the division’s top ten rankings. ‘Smile’n Sam’ is currently on a four-fight win streak and hopes to extend that with another big win over the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt.

Alvey recently joined me on The Right Hook Radio podcast to discuss his upcoming bout against the Brazilian, and stated that he has absolutely no problems going to the ground with the highly-decorated ground specialist:

“I plan on beating him up no matter where the fight goes,” Alvey said. “If it stays standing I’ll hit him real hard there, if it goes to the ground – who knows? Maybe I’ll submit him. I’m really confident in every part of my game and I’m looking forward to showing it off.”

When asked what his biggest advantage is heading into his bout against Leites, Alvey’s answer was simple – the knockout power that has accounted for 18 of his 30 career pro mixed martial arts (MMA) victories:

“Same thing I believe in most fights, I hit really hard,” said Alvey. “Ideally I can land one of those punches and he won’t get back up.”

Last week (Sat. April 15, 2017) the UFC hit Kansas City, Missouri for UFC on FOX 24, which featured a middleweight bout of huge proportions for the 185-pound division, between Jacare Souza and Robbert Whittaker.

Alvey was very impressed with Whittaker’s performance but wasn’t a fan of the early stoppage by the referee, who he believes is only there to make sure he doesn’t lose his life in the midst of competition:

“Yeah that was the only fight of the night I got to see,” Alvey admitted. “Whittaker looked great, I thought the ref looked terrible. He stopped it far too early. I’m a big believer that the ref’s job is to make sure I don’t die, not to make sure I don’t get hurt.

“So if it looks like I’m going to die then feel free to stop it, but if it looks like I’m just gonna have a limp for a little while let it be. Leave me alone. I thought Jacare was going to get him down, but Jacare looked incredibly stiff. He didn’t move right, his hands were up way too far, he just didn’t look like himself. Whittaker took full advantage.”

Sam AlveyAs it pertains to who Alvey is gunning for after a potential win over Leites, Alvey says a match-up against former light heavyweight champ Vitor Belfort would be ideal as he hasn’t looked the same since the UFC’s partnership with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).

Alvey also admitted that the toughest match-up for him at 185 pounds would most likely be former division kingpin Anderson Silva:

“Probably the same guy that everybody’s looking at, Vitor,” Alvey said. “He’s looked terrible his last four fights since USADA has come into play. He’s looked pretty bad so every middleweight looks at Vitor with money signs in their eyes.”

“Anderson Silva is probably the worst match-up in the world for most people, especially me. We’re both a little bit of a counter-striker but he’s a little faster than I am, so it turns into I have to push forward and beat his timing. So Anderson Silva would probably be the hardest match in the world for me, but I’ll be ready for it when it happens.”

The middleweight division has been a bit shaken up to say the least since current division champ Michael Bisping won the strap from Luke Rockhold last year. Bisping’s first title defense came against a then-ranked No. 14 Dan Henderson, and he will now defend his title against former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre who is coming out of retirement.

Alvey has absolutely no problem with ‘GSP’ coming in and receiving an immediate title shot due to everything he’s done for the sport, but doesn’t like the Canadian’s chances against ‘The Count’ once they lock horns:

“It doesn’t really affect me but GSP has done more for this sport than just about anybody else,” Alvey said. “If he wants to retire and then come back, he should get an immediate title shot. He’s earned that with the career he’s had. So I’m thrilled for him, I’m going to tune in and watch it. Unfortunately I think he’s going to get beat.”

“One GSP is small. Even for a welterweight he’s not a big welterweight. He’s going to get into that cage against someone who has such good takedown defense in Michael Bisping and such confident standup as Michael Bisping, I just think GSP’s gonna be pound flat. Both guys have made a career out of out-pointing their opponents as opposed to finishing, GSP does it with his wrestling more times than that. I don’t think he’ll be able to out-point Bisping with his wrestling. Bisping is gonna be too big and too good takedown defense.”

As it pertains to the recent screw-ups that have been happening under the New York State Athletic Commission’s watch during UFC events, Alvey’s dreams of competing at Madison Square Garden are now obsolete.

After seeing calls such as the one made against Chris Weidman during his match with Gegard Mousasi, and Daniel Cormier’s towel fiasco during weigh-ins for UFC 210, Alvey no longer wishes to be a part of an MMA event in ‘The Big Apple’:

“It does. I used to really want to fight in Madison Square Garden but I don’t want to anymore. I mean they’re going to let ‘DC’ (Daniel Cormier) blatantly cheat like that? I mean in front of them! Then the screwup, they don’t allow replay, they do allow replay – yeah. I have no interest in fighting in New York anymore until that commission figures out which way is up.”

“I’ve seen that before (DC’s towel trick). I’ve seen the standing on your head backstage, that helps with a few ounces,” Alvey said. “I actually fought a guy once, the corner put the towel on his belly, just enough to inch him off on the line. I got no Ill will towards ‘DC’ but the commission is the one one that blew the call.”
