Cory Sandhagen scoffs at career advice from super lame Sean O'Malley UFC 292

Ahead of his return to the Octagon this weekend atop a UFC Fight Night Nashville card, surging bantamweight technician, Cory Sandhagen has elected against taking career advice from incoming title challenger, Sean O’Malley – describing certain characteristics of the Montana native as “super lame”.

Sandhagen, the current number four ranked bantamweight contender, makes his Octagon return this weekend at UFC Nashville – taking on short-notice replacement, Rob Font, after an initial scheduled clash against the streaking, Umar Nurmagomedov fell to the wayside.

Sidelined since April, Eliot Marshall trainee, Sandhagen most recently turned in a one-sided split decision win over common-foe, Marlon Vera at UFC Fight Night San Antonio, which followed a prior fourth round doctor’s stoppage win over Song Yadong in another headlined last year.

For O’Malley, the Dana White’s Contender Series alum has been sidelined himself since October of last year, earning next week’s UFC 292 title fight against champion, Aljamain Sterling with a close judging win of his own over former gold holder and common-opponent, Petr Yan.

Cory Sandhagen explains his differences with Sean O’Malley

Sharing his thoughts on recent comments made in a bid to advise fighters from O’Malley, Sandhagen admitted that he could not “connect” with some of the thought processes of the title chaser.

“There are things about Sean O’Malley that I think are just like, super lame,” Cory Sandhagen told Shakiel Mahjouri during a recent interview. “Talking about things like, ‘You fight the worst guy for the most amount of money.’ Everything being like, business decisions. It’s like, I can’t connect with that type of thinking at all. To me, those are ways of thinking that are just weak and they’re ways of thinking that are gonna trend into ruining the sport a little bit, in my opinion.”

“You should want to fight the best guy,” Cory Sandhagen explained. “If you’re here to be the actual world champion, that’s what we’re doing. I don’t see this as a business really… I make good money now, I’m good. The greediness and the business decisions things that happen in a lot of these ways of thinking are, to me, lame. I don’t think that passing on the message that you should fight the worst guy for the most amount of money – that is just such a weak way of thinking.” (Transcribed by MMA News)

UFC Nashville Cory Sandhagen vs. Rob Font Betting Preview

Revered as one of the most technical strikers in the bantamweight division today, surging weight-class challenger, Cory Sandhagen gets the opportunity to showcase his skills in another high-profile main event clash this weekend – closing as a betting favorite over short-notice replacement, Rob Font.

Sandhagen, who currently holds the number four rank in the official bantamweight pile, most recently turned in his second consecutive victory, landing a one-sided split decision win over the then-streaking, Marlon Vera at UFC Fight Night San Antonio back in April.

The victory followed a prior dominant win over Song Yadong, defeating the Chinese upstart with an eventual fourth round doctor’s stoppage TKO win in another headliner – this time at the UFC Apex facility.

And remaining on this weekend’s card in ‘The Volunteer State’, Sandhagen was initially scheduled to fight the surging, Umar Nurmagomedov in Nashville, until an injury forced the Russian talent to withdraw from proceedings.

Pulled from a planned UFC 292 fight with the aforenoted, Yadong in Boston next weekend, East Coast favorite, Font books his fourth headlining clash in his last five Octagon pairings in his impromptu pairing against Colorado native, Sandhagen this weekend.

Snapping a run of back-to-back losses to both former featherweight kingpin, Jose Aldo, and common-opponent, Vera, New England Cartel staple, Font most recently snapped his losing skid with an impressive first round win over Adrian Yanez at UFC 287 back in April. The victory earned Font a Performance of the Night bonus to boot.

However, despite his recent turn of form, Font has some ways to go in convincing the bookies ahead of his return, with Sandhagen currently riding a -333 betting favorite line with Betway to secure victory this weekend in his pursuit of an undisputed bantamweight title fight.

Sharing the Octagon with both former champion, Petr Yan, and current undisputed kingpin, Aljamain Sterling in the last three years – Sandhagen suffered a one-sided loss to the latter in the pair’s title-eliminator, before dropping an interim title loss to Yan on ‘Fight Island’.

A technical striker, Sandhagen, a product of Eliot Marshall, has landed notable wins over the likes of Iuri Alcantara, John Lineker, Raphael Assuncao, Marlon Moraes, and former lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar during his tenure with the organization.

Also of note on this weekend’s ‘Fight Night’ billed card in Nashville, former undisputed strawweight champion, Jessica Andrade co-headlines against the hugely-touted undefeated contender, Tatiana Suarez.

In the midst of a two-fight losing skid – most recently bookended by a stunning KO loss to Chinese sensation, Yan Xiaonan, Andrade is currently priced as a large +290 betting underdog with Betway to defeat TUF winner, Suarez – who is closing as an impressive -380 betting favorite.

9-0 as a professional, Suarez, who holds an eye-catching win over former two-time strawweight champion, Carla Esparza, made a stunning return to the Octagon for the first time in four years back in February – defeating Montana De La Rosa at the flyweight limit with a second round guillotine choke win. Over the course of her Octagon tenure, Suarez also secured a first round rear-naked choke triumph over current flyweight queen, Alexa Grasso.

Umar Nurmagomedov offered some insight into the injury that forced him out of his main event showdown with Cory Sandhagen.

Riding an incredible 16-0 undefeated streak, Nurmagomedov is on the cusp of title contention in the bantamweight division. The UFC Nashville headliner could have thrust Nurmagomedov into the division’s top five, but after suffering an unfortunate injury whilst sparring, he is now out of the bout. As the promotion scrambles to find a suitable replacement, Nurmagomedov offers an inside look at what caused the injury that took him out of next month’s main event.

In the footage initially shared on Nurmagomedov’s Instagram, the 27-year-old contender appears to throw a right jab before staggering back with his shoulder in a clearly compromised position.

The UFC Could Have a Tough Time Replacing Umar Nurmagomedov

Despite the bantamweight division being one of the most talent-loaded weight classes in the UFC, the promotion will likely struggle to find a replacement with many of the top dogs at 135 already being booked. No. 13 ranked contender Adrian Yanez offered up his services while others have suggested that Deiveson Figueiredo could step in and take the fight on three weeks’ notice, though the ex-flyweight champ is already booked for a bantamweight debut against former 135-pound king Dominick Cruz in September.

It was a rough couple of days for Dagestani fighters and the promotion’s return to Nashville as Said Nurmagomedov also withdrew from his previously scheduled bout with Kyler Phillips at the event.

Fighting out of Chelyabinsk, Russia, Umar Numragomedov stormed into the UFC, scoring back-to-back rear-naked choke submissions against Sergey Morozov and Brian Kelleher. He followed that up with a unanimous decision win over Nate Maness and a first-round knockout of Raoni Barcelos in his last appearance.

It is unclear how long he expects to be sidelined with his shoulder injury.

Winning The Ultimate Fighter 23 back in 2016, Tatiana Suarez defeated Amanda Cooper in the season finale, before securing Viviane Pereira, and then current undisputed flyweight champion, Alexa Grasso, and former two-time strawweight titleholder, Carla Esparza.

Cory Sandhagen reveals funny reason Umar Nurmagomedov fight I'm a beast b*tch

Former interim bantamweight title challenger, Cory Sandhagen has revealed a hilarious reason for accepting a fight with the undefeated, Umar Nurmagomedov – atop an upcoming UFC Fight Night Nashville card in August.

Sandhagen, the current #4 ranked division contender, is slated to headline his second consecutive event of this year, having most recently taken main event status at UFC Fight Night San Antonio back in March – defeating Ecuadorian fan-favorite, Marlon Vera in a split decision win.

The victory came as the Elevation Fight Team staple’s second successively to boot, having previously stopped Song Yadong with an eventual fourth round doctor’s stoppage in a headliner at the UFC Apex facility last year.

Cory Sandhagen reveals reasoning for accepting Umar Nurmagomedov fight

And now slated to return against the undefeated, Nurmagomedov, who has so far found opponents hard to come by during his five-fight Octagon tenure, Sandhagen, who puts his status as a top contender on the line against the Russian in Tennessee this summer, gave a rib-tickling reason for taking the bout.

“Hey, I know you guys saw the announcement,” Cory Sandhagen said in a video posted on his official social media. “I’m fighting August 5. against Umar Nurmagomedov. I’m getting a lot of haters, saying, ‘Why would you fight this far down in the rankings?’ He’s going to beat my ass, blah, blah, blah. Two reasons; one, Umar is a great fighter, and I’m not trying to be world champion if I’m not the actual best in the entire world. So fighting Umar is a great challenge and I accept it.”

“And number one;” Cory Sandhagen continued. “Because I’m a beast, b*tch. That’s why. Peace, I’ll see you guys in Nashville.”

Fighting for a potential slot in the top-5 of the bantamweight ranks, Nurmagomedov, the cousin of former undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov – has landed a stunning 16-0 professional record throughout his career.

Most recently featuring back in January of this year in ‘Sin City’, Nurmagomedov stopped the highly-touted Brazilian veteran, Raoni Barcelos with a blistering body kick KO win.

Anthony Pettis left UFC Nashville with a spectacular knockout victory last month, however, he didn’t exit the Octagon unscathed.

ESPN reports that “Showtime” suffered a broken nose after his victory over Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. Doctors have determined the ex-lightweight champ doesn’t need surgery, but he will need to rest for four-to-six weeks. Pettis pulled off a sensational superman punch knockout over the two-time welterweight title challenger in the second round of their main event meeting.

With the win, he became just one of three fighters in UFC history to get a victory in three different weight classes (featherweight, lightweight, welterweight). Pettis joins Conor McGregor and Kenny Florian in the record books. The Milwaukee native has not finalized a next opponent as of this writing, however, he’s hoping to get back to work this summer.

The 32-year-old is eying a return to 155 pounds where some fun match-ups could be waiting after his big win. Perhaps a bout with former World Series Of Fighting (WSOF) lightweight champ Justin Gaethje, who comes off of a ridiculous knockout of his own, would be a fun match-up?
