The UFC recently announced that their UFC 233 pay-per-view (PPV) from Aneheim, California on January 26th has been cancelled.

A main event was never locked down for the card, thus forcing the promotion to call the event off altogether. Now, the fights that were already scheduled to take place on the card will be moved to upcoming events. The UFC has already officially announced where several of those contests will be moved.

First, EPSN reports Paul Felder’s match-up with James Vick will once again be rebooked. They were initially scheduled to fight at UFC Boise in July. However, Vick was forced to pull out with an injury. After having their UFC 233 date scrapped, they’ll now meet on the UFC’s television premiere on ESPN on February 17th. The show goes down from the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona.

ESPN also reports that the flyweight match-up between Joseph Benavidez and Deiveson Figueired will now take place at ESPN+ 1 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on January 19th. However, MMA Fighting reports that a January 19th date is too soon for Figueired, and Yahoo Sports reports Benavidez will instead serve as an alternate for TJ Dillashaw and Henry Cejudo at ESPN+ 1.

Also, ESPN reports Cynthia Calvillo’s match-up with Cortney Casey has also been moved to the Feb. 17th card; as well as a bantamweight bout between Manny Bermudez and Benito Lopez. Aleksandra Albu and Emily Whitmire’s strawweight fight will also take place on the card.

MMA Junkie reports a March 9th ESPN+ event (location to be determined) will now play host to the bantamweight match-up of Yana Kunitskaya vs.Marion Reneau. They also report a middleweight contest between Anthony Hernandez and Markus Perez has been moved to ESPN+ card on February 2nd from the Centro de Formacao Olimpica do Nordeste in Fortaleza, Brazil.

Alex Oliveira clarifies the reason that he tapped out in his latest fight under the UFC banner. Oliveira lost to Gunnar Nelson by second-round rear-naked choke at UFC 231. The event went down on Saturday, December 8, 2018, at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

In the fight, Nelson was able to slice open Olivera with a nasty elbow that led to him getting back mount and locking in the choke for the win. Now, Olivera is claiming in a recent interview that he didn’t tap due to the submission. Instead, it was due to taking that dangerous elbow thrown by Nelson.

”The rear-naked choke was in, but I was alive, I was fine. The problem was all that blood,” Oliveira said to MMA Fighting). “When I put my hand on my forehead I felt everything was f***ing open, I couldn’t see anything. Even if I made out of that round, the referee wouldn’t let me continue.”

As a result of this loss, it snapped Oliveira’s two-fight winning streak. On the flip side, Nelson got back to the winning column a year after a loss to Santiago Ponzinibbio. For Oliveira, he’s looking forward after his latest hurdle.

”This loss was a win for me. We also learn when we lose, right?” Oliveira said. “I keep my head held high. Let’s prepare for the next one. I can’t train now, but I can’t stand still. I need to do something. Losses are part of the game, we understand that. That elbow changed everything. It was his day, not mine, and I accept it. Let’s work for the next one.”

Andrea Lee is not looking back, but rather forward heading into her upcoming fight at the UFC on FOX 31 event despite her personal issues.

She’s slated to take on Jessica-Rose Clark in a women’s flyweight bout this weekend. This fight will be an important one for her as it marks her first bout since being allegedly attacked. This alleged domestic violence incident involved her husband and MMA coach Donny Aaron. It also involved fans pointing out Nazi tattoo on Aaron’s left arm in a social media post.

Despite these problems that she was forced to overcome, she talked about her focus during a recent interview. This is where the prospect noted that it hasn’t affected her life outside the cage.

“Honestly, I have not let it affect me any during this fight camp,” Lee told MMAjunkie. “Some people may not believe it at all. But I’m a very strong, mentally, person. So I’m able to overcome a whole lot of things. It’s just something that has happened, it happens in a lot of people’s lives. You choose how you’re going to deal with it. I feel like I’ve dealt with it the right way. I’m moving forward and not looking back. All’s forgiven, and I’m happy.”

Timing

The incident on August 4th led to Aaron being charged with violence/battery and false imprisonment. However, that didn’t stop her from continuing her MMA career. Just one month later, her fight at UFC on FOX 31 was announced.

She discussed the timing of the bout and being ready to fight.

“I would’ve preferred to have kept all of that my personal, private business,” Lee said at the time. “It’s my life, and the way that it got out in the media just kind of sucks. At first I thought, was I going to be ready?” Lee said. “And then if that was enough time. Then after a few days of thinking it over, I was like, ‘I got this, I can do that.’ I need a fight, it’s a great distraction. Every fighter needs money. But I was super excited about the fight with Jessica-Rose Clark. She’s a great fighter, and I respect her.”
