Kamaru Usman explains why he wants to fight Colby Covington instead of getting a title shot as his next fight under the UFC banner.

Many people believe that Usman should be in the running for a title shot after his latest win. He’s fresh off a win over former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos at The Ultimate Fighter 28 Finale.

It was a dominating performance that continued his ninth straight victory inside the octagon. Before this fight, he was able to defeat former title contender Demian Maia by unanimous decision in the main event of UFC Chile.

This led to UFC President Dana White stating that he would like to see Usman challenge Tyron Woodley for the welterweight title. It turns out that Usman told TMZ Sports in a recent interview that he was offered a certain fight. A contest against the welterweight contender in January.

“I’m gonna go out there and knock out Colby Covington,” Usman said (H/T to MMAFighting).” That right now is the fight. The UFC just called and they offered us the fight. They said Colby Covington in January. You know what I’m gonna do. Of course I accepted. For the fifth time, I’ve accepted the fight. Right now we’re just waiting on him.”

Kamaru Usman Explains His Mindset

The general belief for months now was that once Woodley was cleared to compete again after having his latest surgery then he would fight Covington. This would be his next title defense and expected to take place in the first quarter of 2019. That may change should Usman get his way, which is something that he’s destined to achieve.

“There comes a time where what we do in our careers where we get that one guy. That guy that just makes your blood boil. That really pulls the real savage out of you,” Usman said. “I have to touch him. I have to. I’ve got to bless this dude with my hands. I’ve got to bless him. It’ll be a little sour taste in my mouth to win the belt, win multiple times. Then retire knowing I didn’t put my hands on this dude.”

TUF 28 Finale gets the lowest ratings ever in the history of these season-ending shows of the reality series as it was the final one on the FS1 platform.

The viewership numbers for this event have been released. The event, which took place on November 30, 2018 at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, averaged 399,000 viewers. Rafael dos Anjos vs. Kamaru Usman in a welterweight bout will headline this show. Justin Frazier vs. Juan Francisco Dieppa in the TUF 28 heavyweight finale will serve as the co-headliner.

The main card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 10 p.m. ET. The preliminary card will be split broadcasted on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass, at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Lowest Ratings Ever

As a result of these numbers, it marked the lowest prime-time number on FS1 in history. Before this show, UFC’s previous low was for a prime-time show that did 499,000 viewers for the July finale of TUF.

On paper, it looked like a decent card, and it delivered a good night of fights that had a few notable names. Antonina Shevchenko, who is the sister of current women’s Flyweight title contender Valentina Shevchenko, pulled in the most viewers. Her fight against Ji Yeon Kim peaked the viewership numbers for this show with 465,000 viewers. The main card averaged 9.472 viewers through FOX streaming services.

Other viewership notes include the prelims averaging 353,000 viewers on television and 6,179 viewers streaming. This portion of the card was headlined by Kevin Aguilar vs. Rick Glenn. The pre-fight show did 118,000 viewers and post-fight show did 139,000 viewers.

Fight fans will not have to wait long for more UFC action as the Las Vegas-based promotion returns with another event. The UFC 231 pay-per-view is set to take place on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The prelims will air on FOX Sports 1.

The UFC’s early 2019 schedule has already seen some significant shakeup. Now, UFC on ESPN+1 features a high-profile title fight.

News arrived from ESPN’s Ariel Helwani tonight that the flyweight super fight between Henry Cejudo and TJ Dillashaw originally slated for January 26’s UFC 233 has been moved up a week:

Cejudo vs. Dillashaw was scheduled for UFC 233’s co-main event slot from Anaheim, California the week after UFC on ESPN+ 1. But when the Brooklyn card was left without a headliner, the promotion decided to move the 125-pound title fight across America to New York.

The fight is possibly the last 125-pound title fight in UFC history. The expectation is that the division will be cut due to longtime former champion Demetrious Johnson leaving for ONE Championship.

The card will be the promotional debut on streaming service ESPN+. It recently gained some controversy for being an event featuring the debut of controversial heavyweight Greg Hardy on the same card as domestic violence victim Rachael Ostovich.
